Read an interview with the director and a couple of cast members...apparently the director's looking for the "what the hell did I just see" reaction from the audience, which fits in with the stereotypical art house crowd. Essentially, it's a troll attempt on the "normal" populace. Even better, he claims he used the first movie to set up expectations for this one.

Saw tron:Legacy on netflix this weekend. Not as bad as I was expecting. Still not sure why Tron needed a sequel, but the latest FX were nice and shiny.

George Romero, please stop making movies about zombies. If they hadn't fallen into this trap You would have been relegated to Scifi channel movies decades ago.

Meh, for it's time it's incredible but it really hasn't held up well. Romero's zombie movies have always relied on the people in them being completely beyond hope stupid for there to be any kind of threat.

Saw the Thing tonight. Wasn't that derivative of Carpenters version considering there are only so many ways a parasite that mimics others can take over an isolated group. The way they go about trying to figure who is human is fairly clever and seeing that it's actually scientists it's reasonable that they would go about figuring out with blood samples to start. Creature effects weren't fantastic, lighting was off would be the big gripe there. But they were able to show off more of how just coming into contact with it was enough. I did like that the body changes weren't so much the focus as in Carpenter's but more that it changes and then goes on to do something.

It did get me thinking about how dumb the alien is. It's smart enough to mimic people perfectly but can't realize that if it just didn't absorb everything around it or try to play nice in order to get out of the frozen wasteland first.

Overall it wasn't as well constructed as Carpenters but had some very effective scenes and I think it's getting worse reviews than it deserves.

Oh and every time there was some Norwegian being spoken, I couldn't help but think TROLLS!

Wow, we disagree 100% (I'm sure you are shocked by this. :) The 60s gen gap dialog is terribly dated, but I don't think the shooting and lighting have ever been beat for pure simplicity of concept. The jarring interphasing of the various media reports has basically been repeated in every zombie movie made since, and in other ways it's really influential. "Johnn'ys got the keys."

And it has the scariest first few minutes in horror history, provided you see it for the first time in a theatre.

When I watched that movie for the first time (a couple years back), I did my darndest to "put myself in the time period." If I was watching this for the first time back then...what would it be like.

Amazing movie, scary as hell (watching it with that mindset). The kid in the basement?! Insane for that time.

Horror movies work better with more shadows and suspense than pure gore. Period.

NOTLD is awesome, but I will take the Exorcist as scariest movie I saw in a theater. (re-release) After that it was probably Alien. (also re-release had seen it a dozen times previous but still)

For me, Halloween was up there. Believe it or not, Copycat was a very good one (although that may be more suspense than horror). And rip away, but I thought Blair Witch (the first one) was great; having camped in the middle of nowhere like they did helped that opinion. You hear stuff, imagined or not, if you're not used to that sort of camping.

In theater? Yeah Exorcist would be right up there for me along with Jaws (for different reasons) and Amityville Horror. I read the book for AH after seeing the movie and I still put the book down twice and had to come back (I was about 12 at the time).

I thought Holloween was great in this regard as was Misery.

Misery was awesome. Might fall into the same type of movie as Copycat, but still creepy as all hell.

And while not technically a "movie," "IT" scared the crap outta me. Well, until the end, when it went all sci-fi on it.

Paranormal Activity 3

Pretty much the same setup as the first 2 but with some VERY effective effects and the little girls are insanely creepy. There's this camera that pans back and forth and it's such an effective way to ramp up tension. They also learned from their mistakes with the first two and didn't give away big scares in the trailer. Many of the scenes start out like what's there but go in a completely different direction.

Gonna check out the "The Girl With..." trilogy. I've heard good things about the story itself, and the movie adaptations (haven't read the books).

Plus, with the American version coming out (Fincher directing, so yeah I'll give it a chance), I want to be able to compare the movies.

Finally watched The Big Lebowski last night. I may take some flack for this, but I didn't think it was anything more than an OK popcorn movie. I laughed a few times, that was about it.

Believe me, I found it quite "meh" the first time I watched it. I now think it's hilarious.

Saw a couple movies this weekend:

Scream 4

I actually had forgotten it existed. It was okay, except for the fact that I never knew you could pay an homage to yourself. Wow, the self-backslapping was bad. It really took away from the movie, instead of adding to it.


The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Well, THAT had some disturbing scenes. It was almost like a Swedish "Se7en," to be honest. That being said, I thought it was pretty *ing awesome.

It probably goes without being said, but the books are a bit more twisted than the movies. With THAT being said, the movies actually stayed pretty close to the source material, as far as adaptations go. The books spend some more time making Blomquist a bit more unlikable/flawed and spend more time making the villains a bit more heinous.

I had heard the movies are good adaptations (mainly from people who read/saw both), so I went with the movies. When the common theme of the movies staying close to the books came about, I chose movie form.

I'm actually anxious to see how Fincher does the movie.
