Daybreakers

It's a nice little sci-fi/horror movie. At least it has real vampires in it, unlike some other movies I refuse to mention by name. The premise was kinda cool, too.

It could have been a lot more.

Very few movies escape that commentary.

I thought the "twists" were actually well-thought out, not of the "well, we'll create this sort of twist because of the...whatever." Sure, the ending in general was obvious, but the subtext was pretty good: the brother, who was "never good at being human" redeeming himself as a human, etc.

Little things like that, along with good action and suspense made it decent. It could have been a ScyFy wannabe movie so easily, and it wasn't.

That's setting the bar pretty low, dontcha think? ;)

I think it may have suffered from Budget Creep: original interesting concept attracts more investment but now that there's more at risk it's dumbed down to attract a larger audience. It didn't make me want to burn the theater down, but it did seem like "So, somebody was smart enough to come up with a really good premise but they still went down Cliche Avenue with it? Really?"

See also: 28 Weeks Later. In marked contrast, see: Dog Soldiers, Children of Men.

Black Dynamite for the win. Could this night get any better? (ok, under the circumstances :p)

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

This is weird and I don't understand it. Our local "handwringing animal rights" and "gay cowboys eating pudding" arts theater is showing Human Centipede 2. Is there something about it I'm missing?

Usually the answer to that question involves sex and/or alcohol.

Well, the latter was on hand. But the former wasn't, hence my parenthesis part of the post.

And Kepler: NO. NO. NO.

Just reading about the first one, and seeing a clip or two, DO NOT WATCH.

Your beret theater probably just thinks it's "daring; ahead of its time" or some other euphamism.

Or it is because it is 31 days of Halloween and lots of theaters, including artzy ones are showing it. The Uptown Theater is as well though they often show really crappy movies at midnight :)

I saw Ides of March...it is very very good. The last half hour kind of drags (since you know all the twists and just waiting for it to play out) but Gosling is outstanding in it! Clooney was his usual Clooney self and Hoffman and Giamatti as the Campaign Chairs were fantastic.

I think you're probably right, but that would say a lot about the proprietors' ivory tower isolation. Torture porn is so 2006.

If that's what they were after, I'm amazed they didn't do it in French.

That movie looks so horrible the unintended comedy might make it enjoyable. Chris Pine is good for that.

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

Has anybody seen "The Mill and the Cross"? Looks like a great concept movie, but sometimes those can go wrong.

I'm also trying to remember the name of a film I saw about 20 minutes of a few years ago. The main character (Rembrandt maybe) paints groups and set pieces, and he's visited by a (maybe visionary) little girl on his rooftop, and his wife is pregnant...

Dang, it's gnawing at me and I'm getting nowhere looking it up. It may have been while we were in England, in which case if it was some Brit TV movie I'm screwed, I'll never find it.
