I read the book about a year ago, and then happened to see that the movie was on one day last week, so I watched it. I lasted about 15 minutes before I changed it. The movie is nothing like the book.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Been watching episodes of the Maigret series with Michael Gambon. They're pretty good -- say a 7 on a scale with Suchet's Poirot at 9 and Brett's Holmes at 10. I can't get over how much Gambon speaks like Leo McKern.

I enjoyed the book a great deal, even if some parts seem a bit "glorified", and didn't even bother when the flick came out.

What's with all the geriatric action flicks this year?

Aging Boomers. They're going to navel-gaze literally all the way to the grave.

Hey -- don't make me send Radio Robert to lay a beat down on you!

PUNKS!! :p :D

I saw Red this weekend as well. i loved it, thought it was very well done. Mary Louise Parker is such a good actress, and was perfect for that role. John Malkovich(?) was great, loved the scene with him and the RPG. Helen Mirren as the blood thirsty killer was great too. This is one of those good over the top, ridiculous, stunts because you go in knowing its going to happen...and they didn't let the love stories ruin the movie!!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

So I saw Jacka $$ 3D last night. It was my first 3D movie. A good one to start on I think. The 3D was well done...but probably not something that really was neccessary in this case. As for the movie itself...well after walking out my jaw hurt from laughing. So yeah, I enjoyed it.

On the plus side, I did see a trailer for Tron: Legacy in 3D. That will probably be the next movie I actually pay to see in 3D. There was also a new trailer for True Grit (though not a 3D movie). Everytime I see a trailer I get more excited for that movie. It looks fantastic.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Iron Man 3 just got a release date set - 52 weeks after The Avengers Favreau wants the villian to be Mandarin. I only just heard of that character for the first time in this cnn blog post.

http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/19/iron-man-3-gets-release-date/?hpt=Sbin

Steel yourselves, "Iron Man" fans – the third installment of the hit movie starring the metallic Marvel character has an official release date. According to SlashFilm.com, "Iron Man 3" – which hasn't yet started filming – will arrive in theaters on May 3, 2013.

...

Before Downey suits up for that film, however, he'll be playing Iron Man in the superhero ensemble "The Avengers." Set to star Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America and "Iron Man 2" star Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, the film is set to land on the big screen May 4, 2012.

Jennifer Connelly is hot. I think that's a universal given. However, she's really hot in Blood Diamond, which IMO is a very underrated movie. Even in its cut form (now showing on USA) it's still powerful.

The main black guy is unreal in his character, and of couse Leo does a good job.

I didn't like how Blood Diamond ended....

....all the way up the hill, the plane is seemingly right there, and....he...just...can't...make....it....bah!

Enemy At The Gates

Why did they ruin a potentially f*ing awesome movie with a love story? Well, they didn't totally ruin it, but they gave it a good maiming. Jude vs Ed? Awesome. The strategery, the minute details of sniping, everything. Awesome. The opening scene? *ing intense. The love story? Un-needed, at least at the depth it was shown. Especially the ending.

Hard to go wrong with showing off Rachel Weisz for eye candy, but yeah, would have been a little better without so much of a love story.

Oh, she's hot. But it's all blood, guts, propaganda, then OOOH hearts and flowers! Yeah, not the movie for it. It could have been worse, don't get me wrong, but it just seemed so out of place.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Saw "The Last Samurai" last night. I hated it when it originally came out, but I think my view was colored more by Cruise's rampant idiocy than the merits of the movie itself. However, another look impressed me on a number of levels. I doubt seeing Cruise as a "samurai", but he did a good job as a washed-up Army officer in the first part. I really liked Ken Wantanabe's character, much as I did with "Letters from Iwo Jima".

There's a lot of movies I end up having to look past actors i hate to still enjoy.

A Few Good Men tops the list. Hate Demi Moore, not particularly fond of Tom Cruise, but great movie so long as you see it in widescreen...the pan & scan version almost makes me nauseous with the amount of panning (or scanning, whatever) done to show things on the edges of the film.
