Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

How can they go into production when they don't have any money? They should sell off the rights to one of those two products just so they can make the other and get some positive cash flow rolling again.

Exactly. As cash strapped as they are, they have assetts that they can move to get one of 'em going.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Sharktopus is amazingly horrible, and horribly amazing.

Not as fun to watch as Spring Break Shark Attack, though. Two words: Blood. Explosions. Also, SBSA keeps you interested by waiting to see when the DB date-rapist gets eaten. To top it off, the harpoon shot is awesome. Basically, it's two different movies slammed together. At many points, it feels like two completely separate movies. The one downside is that midway through the movie, you find yourself saying, "aren't there supposed to be shark attacks?"

Lake Placid 3 was less interesting. Colin Ferguson (the main character of "Eureka") is great, as is Michael Ironside (though he's getting large), but the movie is, expectedly, very meh.

(Saturday was "water monster" day on SyFy, leading up to Sharktopus.)

One thing I thoroughly enjoyed about Sharktopus was the nearly entirely imperfect casting. Eric Roberts and the DJ were good. The worst was the "investigative reporter".

Also, saw The Expendables earlier in the day. Excellent entertainment. Ridiculous, over-the-top, and tons of fun. Love watching Statham and Jet Li. Stallone looks terrible (especially standing next to Arnold).

There was a moment when ScyFy decided to just go for it. I don't know when the turning point was -- sometimes before Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (2009). The roots of this are as old as Piñata (2002). They are the American International of our times.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Got some movies to clear off the DVR this week:

Thank You For Smoking
Spirited Away
Pineapple Express
I Heart Huckabees
Citizen Kane
Finally saw Thank You For Smoking; excellent movie. Aaron Eckhart was brilliant as Nick Naylor, as well as Robert Duvall as "The Captain."

Next up: Spirited Away

Oh man, Pinata is one of my all time favorites. I must have seen that at least half a dozen times. Terribly awesome.

Did you ever get around to watching Thankskilling?

One of my favorite scenes in "Thank You...":

Kid #3: My Mommy says smoking kills.
Nick Naylor: Oh, is your Mommy a doctor?
Kid #3: No.
Nick Naylor: A scientific researcher of some kind?
Kid #3: No.
Nick Naylor: Well, then she's hardly a credible expert, is she?

I'm saving it for a special occasion. On a different tack, I also loved Spirited Away.

That was one of my favorite scenes.

Personally, I like this quote:

Nick Naylor: My job requires a certain... moral flexibility. :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Watched Wall Street last night for the first time. Good stuff.

As tcbg mentioned, we saw The Expendables. I thought it was extremely entertaining and well worth the price (free). :p Loved the gun that exploded people.

Sharktopus was a bit of a letdown, I thought. I also enjoyed Spring Break Shark Attack and agree with the mashup of 2 movies comment.

Thank you all for reminding me that I have to show tcbg Thank You For Smoking as he has not yet seen it, but does like the main actors in the movie.

Social Network was exactly what I expected. It probably takes massive fictional liberties, but as storytelling it's very good.

Actually word has it that the movie is quite accurate...

Does it make Zuckerberg look like a giant prick, like everyone's saying?

It makes him look about as arrogant and socially incompetent as you would expect. My reaction was he was a composite of a dozen or so guys I knew back in college -- it's a very common type. I actually kind of like kids like that when they're 20. If they're still like that at 30, they're zeros, but youthful churlishness is an ordinary reaction to the horror of discovering adults are exactly as stupid as the kids you grew up with.

Everything I've read says they made large parts of it up.

Well no offense, but the fact that Zuckerberg thinks it is false doesnt exactly prove the point since he is demonized for much of it. I have read a few "histories" of Facebook (articles, not books because I dont care that much :p ) and there is a clear line of how it started and blew up as it did and it seems the movie covers that which is what matters...the rest is just he said/she said bs. No one knows the truth.

Of course, he could just shut up about it and stop whining. You didn't hear Bill Gates (I dont think) whining about the portrayal of him in Pirates of Silicon Valley even though it showed how he stole everything, lied to everyone, had no real talent but still found a way to stab apple in the back and get Microsoft off the ground. Ya know why...because he is a friggin rich man because of it and he doesnt have to care! My guess is Zuckerberg is every bit the d-bag the movie makes him out to be and his ego wont handle it being shown as such :p

Men Who Stare At Goats was complete crap. Not one funny moment in the entire movie. The jedi reference got old after the first time.

Flesh & Blood with Rutger Hauer was pretty bad as well, but it does have a lot of 1980's boob flashes in it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Saw Scott Pilgrimm at the 2nd run theater Saturday (which is now up to $3per ticket - hopefully that means they're going to use the extra $1/ticket to do some much needed maintenance inside) - immensely fun movie. Cera plays himself, the video game references were out in full force and totally awesome (especially the 8-bit versions of the universal logo and theme kicking things off). Clearly aimed at the 18-35 crowd - doubtful many people older than that will enjoy it, and anyone younger will miss almost all the references to 80's pop culture.
