New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Booo, but not unexpected.

I have BB's online service, which I enjoy, as I have a store around the corner from my house. Which makes one part of the turnaround time great - I return in-store and get a free rental under the terms of my online agreement. When I return that one, my next online movie is shipped. Sadly, that seems to take about a week (was notified season 1 of "The State" shipped on Monday. Still haven't seen it).

Gotta love the comments about Blockbuster screwing people over on late fees and rental prices (I don't think they're that bad). "I was a nervous [w]reck getting the movies back on time." Any other video store not have late fees? Hell, RedBox (which some of the comments tout as superior) has late fees, though the "return anywhere" feature is nice.

*shrug* I'll have to keep an eye on the local store. I hate seeing business shut down, but I'm not above vulturing. Also, I'll need to switch to Netflix.

I had this pegged about three years ago, so I'm a bit surprised it's taken this long.

Netflix's storeless, low overhead model killed them.
I have to think that a majority of Blockbuster's business in the past few years has been the online program, but they probably should have simply shut down all of their stores and modeled it more closely to Netflix. BB Online's turnaround time is too long, and they charge to watch movies instantly, unlike Netflix.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

It's a buggy whip story. The moment online became viable they should have migrated and used their name and catalog deals to trounce any upstart. Instead, they were greedy: they had had a goldmine in late fees and in all that additional crap you could buy while waiting in line, and they didn't want to give it up.

I'm sure the execs paid themselves well leaving the burning building. The folks who really took it were the franchise holders, but that's always a mug's game anyway.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Blockbuster's BK, and probable liquidation, raises some interesting issues for Netflix. Would a company like Amazon or Google buy Blockbuster's assets, including its library and studio deals, and make a near-instant splash in streaming video? Amazon is revamping its current online service to mirror the subscription model. Perhaps Netflix steps into the role of buying Blockbuster's carcass, and moves further away from DVD deliveries over time.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Blockbuster now has machines like Redbox, but like everyone else here said: too little, too late.

They are gonna have to do something to separated them from Netflix and Redbox, since each of those companies have their stronghold in each way of renting movies (via "vending machine" or by mail).

Don't know if anyone mentioned yet with all the blockbuster talk.

But "The Town" is pretty **** awesome

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I saw Wall Street II: Money Never Sleeps...it was pretty good, not great but enjoyable. I think it captures the collapse quite well but it just doesn't have the magic the first one did. I will say though Douglas as Gekko is always a treat to watch and Brolin was his usual awesome self. (though he will never top his role in Goonies!)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

It gets worse for the film adaptation(s) of "The Hobbit".

MGM has two golden geese (this and the Bond franchise) that probably won't go into production on anything for perhaps a few more years. Geniuses over there.

Golden? Those geese are solid platinum. Cripes, the Hobbit may end up being one of the highest grossing films of all time. I have zero doubts about it going over the $1 billion worldwide.

Meanwhile, I continue to be convinced that the Coens can do no wrong:

All I can say is, "Fill your hands, you sonuvabitch!"

I love the original, and this looks like it might do it justice.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

That is one hell of a cast. And if they hadn't said that was Matt Damon, I'd have never guessed.

How can they go into production when they don't have any money? They should sell off the rights to one of those two products just so they can make the other and get some positive cash flow rolling again.
