New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Went to a screening of Easy A last night. I'll probably catch hell for this, but I really enjoyed it. Emma Stone is fantastic, as usual. Her sarcastic style of humor is wonderful. And her best friend in the movie is played by Alyson Machalka who is downright yummy.

Overall, not the funniest movie you'll ever see, but if you like Emma Stone and can stomach sharing the theater with a few hundred teenage girls (thank GOD the theater took away everyone's cell phone before the movie started) you'll most likely enjoy it.

I thought "Easy A" was a serious documentary about Harvard.

I saw a trailer for this and thought it looked good, but you're braver than I for actually going to see it. Netflix was created to keep us safe from the masses and their adolescent children.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

They actually do this now? Was there a lot of fainting and crying when it happened?

You think that is bad, in my district if a kid is found using a cell phone or Ipod or anything electronic we have to confiscate it, bag it and tag it and send it to the office. Then the kids parents have to come get it or they never get it back

Kids have chosen being suspended over turning their phone in to teachers. (they still give it up in the end but they get kicked out for at least the day) That just amazes me!

Valkyrie:

Pretty good. Even Tom Cruise wasn't distracting. It actually could have been a bit longer (maybe 10-20 minutes) to add a little more detail to how everyone got involved and such.

It's amazing how bad the communications were in that regime. Part of it was the complex structure of the command, and of course the technology, but still.

I thought it was pretty good as well.

Well Hitler purposely made things confusing so no group could try to take power from him. On one hand it kept power from moving away from him, on the other it made his whole operation a slow lumbering behemoth that couldn't react in time.

The Deer Hunter

Finally got around to seeing this. The first two hours were meh. The last hour was good, though.

I love myself a good epic, but this one could have been a bit shorter and still have been okay. Actually, I think the movie was overrated in relation to the hype. Yeah, I said it.

True, and if only they had put a little more explosive into that briefcase, their whole plan would have worked. That and a few assorted thumbtacks and paperclips.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I watched Caprica last night, the movie that served as the pilot for the TV series. It looks like I should make a point to watch that show. If you're a sci-fi fan, it's a good representation of what sci-fi can be. It's not overly burnedened with special effects, but it still makes nice use of them to let the viewers know they're watching a civilization with technology far superior to our own.

Beyond all that, most of the acting is very good. The work of some of the supporting cast could be better, but the main players still do their jobs well.

To say that it starts slow is an understatement.

2 stinkers in a row.

Resident Evil: Afterlife
-- so bad we walked out (and I am a fan of the franchise). Last Night, false-profundity dreck of the last night before the world ends, with Don McKellar showing how much he wishes he was Jarmusch.

He aint.

2 F's.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I'm boycotting all movies in 3D until we get over this stupid fad. It's giving directors and producers excuses to put out trash. "Yeah, BUT IT'S IN 3D!!!11!1"

RE: Afterlife, The Last Airbender, and all of the stock garbage that's been put out in 3D since Avatar. Terrible movies only allowed to be released because they were in 3D.

What is the thing that is going to end the world in Last Night? I recall once seeing part of a movie about the end of the world on cable one night, but got bored with it and watched something else. I want to say it was Last Night.

Unexplained. Flash of light at the end. All very artsy, if by artsy you mean boring and mind-numbingly pretentious.

It won a million awards, because it has a multi-ethnic cast, zero production value, and minimalist emotion. All of which signals a good film about 5% of the time, or incompetent, copycat, Cannes conformism the other 95.

Finally saw "Up In the Air" this weekend. Overall, I liked it, but thought the ending was a bit odd, even though I guessed what would happen when he went to Chicago.

Saw "Risky Business" again, after forgetting about it when Cruise went off the deep end. Still a classic IMHO.

If you hated "Machete" we can't be friends. That movie was thoroughly entertaining in how it embraced its badness.
