Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Random thought here: Is it me or do war movies come out in cycles seemingly?

Definitely. Also apocalypse movies.

Although to some extent all movies come out in cycles, because you get a landmark film followed by a dozen attempts to cash in on it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I'm not following you guys... what's so different about the film before and after Two-Face?

Is there a change in tone of the film that I'm not aware of? It's not like the movie got more ridiculous at that point, it was pretty ridiculous well before Two-Face came into the picture.

I so owe you a beer. Thank you.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

The part where it went from boilerplate comedy to Bill Maher documentary.

I looked it up on Wikipedia. Oh. I agree, dirty pool. It would be like halfway through a Rankin-Bass cartoon we find out Macy's invented Santa Claus as a sales gimmick.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

A question in white about the ending of Inception:

I think we can all agree that we're not meant to know for sure whether the top eventually falls over or if it keeps spinning after that wobble before the cut to black.

The question is "why is it left ambiguous?" Is it because Cobb is happy to see his kids, and therefore doesn't care anymore if he's dreaming or in reality? Or is it because Cobb went into Limbo/kept revisiting his memories to the point where he doesn't know anymore if he's dreaming or in reality?

I've been more inclined that he doesn't know, but I keep seeing arguments that he simply doesn't care, and I'm wondering where you folks stand or if you have other theories.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Don't jump to conclusions. The definition of "ridiculous" that I'm going for is more of "not realistic" as opposed to "comically stupid", which you might be hoping I was saying.

You still get the beer. I know the best I can hope for in the current climate is someone willing to say DK isn't a Voltronic combination of the Bible, Lord of the Rings, and Bladerunner.

Though (and I can't believe I'm going to undercut any criticism of that ill-conceived shapeless mass of adolescent tropes and pseudo-serious sophomoric goo), I don't think verisimilitude is what any comic book movie is aiming for. Iron Man, which was epic in all the ways DK was a failure, has zero "realism." So ironically that (and the special effects) is one place I'd cut it a break.

A question in white about the ending of Inception[/COLOR]

I think both explanations are valid. There are other explanations, too:

Everything in the movie could of course be a dream, in which case, it doesn't matter whether he popped back to the top of that stack, since he's still trapped within another, possibly infinite, set of parens.

Cobb may be in one or some combination of a normal dream, a flight of fancy (a "day dream"), losing his grip on sanity after the death of his wife, etc, and all the inception stuff is just fiction (like, for example, a movie :) ).

For all the reasons you stated, it doesn't matter, and the ambiguity left over is pleasing and interesting.

Did I mention I really, really love this movie?

Answer to your question in white: Kind of a difficult thing to answer really. But I think this is another thing that upon a few veiwings you can decided for yourself. I havent really made up my mind. Part of me wants to believe he came out of limbo and really did get to see his kids again. Another part says he is still in limbo and doesnt care. Still another part says he is in limbo and doesnt know. Still another part of me wonders if there isnt something more we are missing that we may all interpret differently and come to a different conclusion than we normally would have. This reminds me a lot of The Usual Suspects. There are still people that will argue about how was Keyser Soze. Was it Spacey? Was it the lawyer? Someone else? Did he really exist? How much of the story was made up really? etc. Inception will go down the same way with all of us coming to different conclusions. Though from what I have read more people like to think he was in limbo but they cant seem to decide if he doesnt know or doesnt care.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

So Iron Man, a movie with no real villain was epic while TDK which had arguably one of the best villains of all time is a failure? Riiight...

Just admit it, you hated TDK because everyone loved it and you got sick of people telling you how great it was. Hey I do that too so I am not judging, and believe me I will admit there are plenty of flaws in TDK. That said, there s not a better comic movie that has been made, and I have seen almost all of them...minus Wolverine: Origins, the Punisher Movies or Nick Fury: Agent of Shield ;)

Actually I take that back, Batman: Begins was the best for about a million reasons. :)

As for The Invention of Lying...I thought the story turn was what made it good. It was pretty lame the first third of the movie, but after his mom dies the movie actually starts to go somewhere. I thought the mocking of religion was hilarious personally.

I'd have no problem admitting that but in this instance it's not the reason. It was just a terrible movie. Not nearly as terrible as The Departed, which is the Plan 9 from Outer Space of our time, but work-a-day terrible.

I loved The Departed until the end. It was the least creative ending I've ever had to see. It was as if the writers ran out of material and says, ****, well, let's just kill everyone.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Except Adams doesnt have a horse face ;)

Roberts' face is not even close to Sarah Jessica Parker's. When SITC was on, I kept thinking "A horse is a horse, of course, of course" when she was in a scene. A shame really. She was so cute in LA Story with Steve Martin.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Cobb is still in limbo, I'm not sure why that's ambiguous. The kids he hasn't seen in a long time look exactly the same and appear to him in the same way as it was repeated through the movie. Nothing has changed about the house even.

Could even go one step further and say that the entire movie is his own inception of forcing himself to make limbo "real".

Agreed on all counts :D

And dx, you cant blame the writers of the Departed, you have to blame the writers of the movie that those writers stole from :D

But whatever, everyone knows Kepler has no taste...in fact neither does French Rager...anyone see a pattern developing ;)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Foxton (regarding Inception),

That was my conclusion as well.

But whatever, everyone knows Kepler has no taste...in fact neither does French Rager...anyone see a pattern developing ;)

Nope. I loved The Dark Knight. Greatest comic book super villain performance ever. Nothing else comes close.

son of a *****... Guys, movie name on the spoiler. I thought we were still talking about the departed... ;)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

What do you mean Nope, that doesnt answer my question about whether there is a patter between French Rage and Kepler having no taste especially seeing as you love TDK :D

Maybe I should throw in LynahFan too...I am sure he has no taste either and that might help out ;)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Inception spoilers:

The bit about the kids not changing was something I thought about as well.

It's pretty solid evidence towards him still being in a dreamland/limbo of some sort. I wouldn't say it's absolute evidence, though. You could argue that since dreams are all about what exists in your head, Cobb was thinking about what his kids would look like (think of a mental projection) and he just happened to get it right.

Or maybe he's seen pictures of them, since a picture would be "real" whereas a vision of them in dreamland is not. It's a stretch, but possible. I'm pretty certain that Cobb's dialogue about not wanting to see their faces was in the context of him being in dreamland, so he could've been okay seeing actual pictures sent by the grandparents. Again, it's flimsy, but its enough to knock a little uncertainty into the "oh, he's definately still in limbo and I refuse to see it any other way" argument.

This seems like a very deliberate film (as would befit a film that's been in Nolan's head since he did Memento). It seems foolish to say that the outcome is absolutely one way or the other. If we were intended to know that he is still in limbo, I think Nolan wouldn't have shown the top wobble before cutting to black. Unless he's just that much of a bastard.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Exile,

I agree with your last sentence. But that's part of the fun that we get to decide which way we think it goes.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I have a question about Inception:

Can we just start a thread about it already, instead of every single post here having white text? It would be nice to just talk about it, rather than having to hide "spoilers".
