New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies

Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies

It is the movie about Chuck Barris, the guy who made The Dating Game, Newlywed Game and Gong Show. It is based on his book where he claims he was a CIA assassin while making those shows.

Seriously...terrible.

I recall that when the movie was released, the CIA issued a statement calling the premise of the movie false and stating Barris never worked for them. And the movie really sucked too ...

Yes they did probably because the movie implies they rigged the shows and placed agents on it to win the trips abroad along with Barris, like the CIA would need to go to such lengths to get agents into Helsinki and West Berlin...Barris was either crazy or just wanted to make his life sound more important than it was. I hope it was crazy because even his fake life was rather stupid by Secret Agent standards :p

The movie wasn't helped by the fact that Horseface Roberts was in it ;)

"Beer Wars"

Pretty good documentary on the beer business. Kinda follows two small brewers (Dogfish Head and Moonshot) and examines the Big Three brewers, along with the distribution chain, etc.

Interesting to see what Anheuser-Busch (or rather InBev) actually owns. I knew most of them, but there were a few surprises, like Grolsch and Boddington's.

A lot of the 'trendy' imported beers and spirits are indeed owned and/or distributed by conglomerates. I learned that a long time ago.

I'll have to find that documentary. I do like me some DFH 90-Minute IPA. :)

I just watched it on Netflix streaming. I've seen Dogfish around here, I think. Probably will have to try it sometime.

And I know some imports are owned like that, but figured some of the bigger names were their own. :o

The big companies own them, yet continue to crank out their own mass-produced swill instead of making it better. Crazy.

That's the thing. They don't HAVE to make it better. "Lowest common denominator" mean anything? Poor college students, etc. You think Billy Bob Jim is ever going to drink a fancy-schmancy Lambic or Maple Porter?:p

Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies

Hmm. I like beer.

I'll have to check out this documentary. :D

They should learn.

Besides, even I'll partake of some filthy swill malt liquor now and again. Sometimes you just need to live harder than necessary.

Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies

Thought I was in the Drinking thread at first :o

Went to see Alice in Wonderland last night. Not in 3D and not in IMAX. I enjoyed the movie, but wasn't overwhelmed. The colors were stunning (particularly for a Burton film), but I just wasn't blown away. Maybe I've seen enough Burton-Depp collaborations? Thought Alice was really really good - though I didn't like Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. I can't decide if it's the way the character was written, Hathaway's mannerisms, or her dâmned eyebrows, but something just seemed not quite right. I did enjoy the way they did the Cheshire Cat and the twins.

Very much looking forward to Iron Man 2. :)

Men Who Stare At Goats:

Meh. It was okay. Some parts made me chuckle, some ok spoofing of the military, but nothing special. Clooney sorta plays the same kinda-paranoid, really quirky character as he did in Burn After Reading. While that's not a bad thing, as he's good at that, it didn't really break any new ground. And they might as well just called Bridges character The Dude."

It could be one of those movies that grow on you, but only time will tell.

W:

Brolin and Dreyfuss were brilliant in their roles as Bush/Cheney, but other than that? Scattered sequencing, a few nice looks at the daddy issues between W and George, and we all know the story anyway.

Meh.

Meh.

I took it for what it was - entertaining with good acting, but not really all that informative.

The Runaways. Solid B, good story (they took liberties), Dakota Fanning can't act but she looked a lot like Cherrie Currie, Kristen Stewart surprisingly can act, and looked nothing like Joan Jett. The guy who played Kim Fowley, the manager, chewed scenery like he was Peter O'Toole, but was fun.

****ed United
. Amazing movie, first A+ I've seen in a while. Michael Sheen is the best actor currently working. Riveting story, wonderful characters, can't recommend it enough.

I read a few articles about the movie...basically most of the liberties come from the fact that it is Cherrie Currie's book which tweaks the story. Joan Jett (who produced the movie I believe) said when they sent her a tape of Kristen Stewart singing she called them confused wondering why they sent her a tape of herself. That is pretty good praise for Stewart.

I plan to Netflix it.
