New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies

Finally saw Rear Window and it is worth every bit of the hype and praise it's received. Part drama, thriller and romance I thought the Steward/Kelly combo was perfect and I'm inspired to check into other Hitchcock movies I haven't yet seen.

Liked Zombieland. I felt Columbus was acting like he was portraying Michael Cera.

He looks like a combination of Cera and Andy Sanberg...

I thought the exact same thing watching that awful movie Adventureland, it seemed like the part was written for Cera, and he just didn't take it (which was wierd since it was exactly the same as any other role he's ever done)...

I liked Adventureland and was disappointed by Zombieland. After a couple days, I would have sworn Cera was in both of them -- the guy has the breadth of dramatic characterization of Al Pacino. :D

2 months after I join, my video store is closing. Meanwhile I have a bunch of credits to use, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

I know the boyfriend wanted to see Zombieland, so I'll probably pick that up tonight.

Watched Whip It last night. I like Ellen Page, and enjoyed the plot. Somewhat cliche story of girl finds self by doing something uptight mother would not approve of, but still entertaining. Roller Derby looks like fun.

Oh, and I'm not sure if I posted this after I watched it or not, but for any females reading, or anyone that may be able to convince the woman in their lives, do NOT waste time on Made of Honor. It was a horrible chick flick. Predictable plot, and the characters weren't even likeable. I despised both the main characters.

Heigl rarely if ever plays a character even remotely likable. She wasn't likable in Knocked Up either. She's a beautiful girl but just completely without charisma.

There is no such thing as a chick flick that is not entirely predictable. Like the guy flick, part of the genre rule is a strict adherence to a very simple formula. If you moved off the expected plot arc even a smidge you'd lose half the audience.

Heigl wasn't the problem with Knocked Up. Reese Witherspoon could have been in that and it would still have been a dog.

Not to be too much of a girl, but...THAT SCOTTISH GUY IS SO HOT! Ahem, I agree though - rest of the movie - meh.

? Is this in reference to something?

Awesome movie. And keeping with Sam Rockwell, Choke (2008) is a movie that if you haven't seen, is definitely worth the rental.

Huh - I couldn't get through it (which was weird, I liked the book).

I Love You, Man:

Had decent expectations (better than average comedy) and this surpassed it. I really liked this movie. Explained the "guy thing" very well, had some funny lines, and (forgive me for phrasing it this way) had some good male-bonding moments without making it seem totally gay (slang usage).

This is definitely one you could watch with your buddies while having a couple rounds of beer, and have a lot of fun with it.

Very much worth watching, and probably would add to the DVD collection.

And it features Rush!

I just watched Leap of Faith...one of my favorite Steve Martin movies of all time. If you havent seen it I highly recommend it. I have seen it probably a dozen times and love it more each time.

You pretty much can't go wrong with Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, or North By Northwest. Usually considered his peak since all 4 were made in succession. That being said there are quite a few other gems out there to see if you look.

Strangers on a Train
Notorious (Ingrid Berman's best Hitchcock performance)
Rebecca
Dial "M" for Murder (Grace Kelly's best Hitchcock IMO)
Lifeboat
EDIT: How did I forget Frenzy?

Many consider Shadow of a Doubt his best film. I'm not one of them, but I'll list it anyway cause other opinions certainly are valid. Some like Suspicion as well but I wasn't that into it.

And if you really want to run the Gauntlet you can do what I did and watch 33 of the 53 films he was the director on. Totally up to you. :)

I forgot about that one. Some my other faves of his are Shopgirl, and LA Story.

five years old now, but i saw The World's Fastest Indian for the first time this weekend. based on a true story, it's about a new zealander's voyage to bonneville and his quest to set the land speed record for a motorcycle... anthony hopkins plays the lead character and does a great job... fantastic film....
