Recently saw the new Sherlock Holmes, which was about what I expected and good.
Then last week, I randomly picked Book of Eli because nothing really stood out at the moment. Halfway in, I thought it was going to be an atheist flick, then the ending changed my opinion.
Otherwise, it had kind of a typical post-nuclear apocalypse theme, complete with plenty of scorched earth, bombed out cities, scarce resources, desperate villains, and highway violence. Mildly entertaining, but bland.
I watched Yes Man...I enjoyed it more than I figured.
That happened to me once, but it was really early in the movie, my friends and I got free ticket vouchers and I believe a voucher for free pop and popcorn for our inconvenience and ended up going back to see the same movie a couple days laterHad a new experience at a movie theater friday night. The wife and I went to see To Save a Life at a Harkins theater here in the Phoenix area. We were enjoying the movie, and about 3/4 of the way through, at a key point, the screen goes blank. I go out and tell someone, and 15 minutes later they come in and tell us the movie is broken and we can't see the rest. They give us each two free tickets for future movies at Harkins, but we're both wondering what happens the last quarter of the movie. Guess we'll have to go see it again to see the last 1/4. Don't know if the movie reel broke, or the equipment used to show it.
I would probably rate The Illusionist 7.5 of 10. Unlike you Brent, I think Norton intentionally gave an understated performance and I thought Giamatti was brilliant. The guy that played the Crown Prince avoided being cliched and Biel was just good enough. I also think the cinematography was excellent, and the editing - especially with respect to Norton's stage act - was well done. On the downside I thought some of the dialogue was a bit choppy, for some reason I could never say to myself during my viewing that, "this is truly great", and yet for me the biggest downfall was that imho this movie demanded an ending that was inexplicable if not unpredictable and it completely failed at that.
Isn't the whole thrust of the movie, that Eli, who's got god on his side to kill people cause he's blind, is bringing a bible to some place out west, and some guy who actually wants to rebuild a bit decides it's the most important thing that he needs, so he wastes his resources to find something that he could probably just find in the drawer of some abandoned hotel if this world was based on reality at all?
I liked The Prestige better than The Illusionist. Not entirely sure why...I guess I was hoping that The Illusionist had a bigger twist at the end that left more with the feeling 'wow, didn't see that one coming'

Liked Zombieland. I felt Columbus was acting like he was portraying Michael Cera.
