Never thought of that. Very good point. Always wondered why they didn't translate. I mean, you get the drift, but in productions like this, it's always the little details of dialogue or whatever.

I had to read the previous posts to realize you were referring to the latter part of his post and not the former.

Watched Buried (2010) this morning. Very good, a definate must see. I thought Ryan Reynolds was great.

I've heard that. And here I thought he was stereotyped already...

And finally finished Shogun (4 discs, 2:20 each or so). The ending was more abrupt than I remembered it, I thought it could have actually added 5-10 minutes for a little more detail, but that's minor.

For the time it was made (1980)....*ing amazing.

Watching it now? Still pretty dam good, better than so much that's put out there now.

I do recommend it; even though the stance of no subtitles bothered me when he understood some of the language, and yet they didn't use subtitles in those instances.*

*They didn't use subtitles, because it was in the main character's point of view. He didn't understand Japanese, so you shouldn't either. However, later, he learned some basic Japanese and a little more, and still no subtitles. Kind of a hypocrisy: we should "learn" with him, to an extent.

Three The Hard Way

A must for blaxploitation movies. Wow is it craptacular. And it stars Jim Brown (yes THAT one).

Ultimate sinister plot, bad acting, worse action scenes, completely over the top.

I know GLM values it highly, and I understand why. Grab a bag of popcorn, a 40 of OE or Colt 45, and enjoy. :D

Saw the King's Speech at the local Cheapo theatre in Clinton last night. Hell of a good flick I thought. And funny as all get out, without really needing dik and fart jokes, well, other than the therapeutic swearing anyways.

That's racist.

For blaxploitation, I will always put in a word for "Blacula."

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Barfly with Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway. Very underrated imho and produced one of my favorite lines of all time:

Wanda: I hate the police, don't you?
Henry: I don't know, but I seem to feel better when they're not around.

I also rented Repo Man for the first time in probably 20 years with Emilio Estevez but haven't had time to watch it yet.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

It would have totally been nuts if the girl from the True Grit remake had won it and he had been all over that.
She should have won it, IMO. She was excellent, even though there was no way that she was supporting actress.

Never thought I'd see Trent Reznor win an Oscar.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Kirk Douglas was awesome. That being said, I think that's the last live appearance he makes.

"Congratulations, nerds." :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

My Blue Valentine is a delightful movie. I'll admit, I'm a fan of Ryan Gosling movies.

Wouldn't surprise me much, but then again, he could hang around for a few more years. Most of that is just that stroke that affected his speech.

I love it when there are two winners and they race down the aisle to get to the mic first.

Whoa......nice fro!
