NESCAC season 2014-2015

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Any of you among the 56 fans in attendance? Shots were 42-21 in favor of the Camels, but they needed an OT powerplay goal for the win.

As i have noted several times previously...they seem to need about 20 shots per goal scored. [also looked like they hit at least 3 posts...so score a bit misleading].

Let's see how mighty Adrian fares tomorrow....

p.s. looked like the Mighty Poo-bears should have had a few sips of the koolaid before barely squeaking past the mighty Tommies.. :)

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

The spirited contest between two perennially elite DIII old foes made the increasingly slow trek through the Catskills a worthwhile Saturday adventure. By the time we arrived in Pine Valley the temperature had crept above freezing and rain was falling. The 1st period saw end to end action with sharp goal play by Nelson for Elmira and Marsh in net for Middlebury, resulting in no score by either squad. The 2nd illustrated how any misplay or ill advised penalty in a close contest can be a game changer. Elmira had taken an interference penalty attempting to prevent Midd breaking out of the Soaring Eagle offensive zone. Opening on the powerplay, the Panthers scored what was effectively a powerplay goal :08 after Elmira returned to full strength. The puck came up the left wing half board, across ice from the penalty boxes, to Watson inside the blue line. She made a pass across to Bielawski in the right circle and her drive handcuffed Nelson, with Fluke pouncing on the rebound and burying the puck from stickside top of the crease. Two more Elmira minors saw Midd pressuring to add to their lead, but a Panther penalty resulted in instant offense from the Saoring Eagle powerplay. Wilgosh fed across to Ryan (who has an amazing 24 assists on the season) on right point and she deftly inserted the puck to an open Weston in the left circle; she had space and walked in, beating Marsh from the edge of the circle to tie the score. Weston put Elmira ahead early in the 3rd. Grampp made a quick feed to Ryan and a 3x2 developed; Ryan slid the puck to Weston on right wing and she closed and lifted a wrist shot in up on Marsh's gloveside. Middlebury came back to tie with Wulf and Mandigo digging the puck out of the right wing corner on the forecheck; Mandigo fought off 2 Elmira D, went behind the net and came out on Nelson's stickside. On her backhand and free from the D she moved a bit away from net and powered the puck in under Nelson.
Norwich will visit Elmira next Sunday in another matchup off top 5 USCHO poll teams, while the Panthers return to the friendly confines of Kenyon in hosting NESCAC foe Wesleyan.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Now we get down to the heart of NESCAC conference play. Hamilton has a non-conference swing to the east, with games at St. Michaels and Plymouth State. The eight others look at two game sets:
Amherst visits Colby
Conn College visits Bowdoin
Trinity visits Williams
Wesleyan visits Middlebury
Last season my efforts at predicting NESCAC results were so dismal that I considered resorting to thinking one thing and predicting the opposite. Anyway, a few observations. Colby has not played in a bit and the Lord Jeffs are #9, so sweep? Alfond Arena is a long way from Orr. Bowdoin and Trinity had better experiences visiting the Midwest than either Conn or Williams, but I am thinking split in these series. Wesleyan has been pesky, but the Panthers played an excellent game out at the Murray and should prevail at home.

Never been right yet, but here goes...

Jeffs sweep the Mules
Kamels take 3 pts vs the P-Bears
Bantams and Purple Cows split
Panthers take 3 pts vs the Cardinals

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Connecticut College made the trip Downeast, visiting the friendly confines of Bowdoin's Watson Arena, and skated away with a hard fought closely contested 2-1 win on the strength of solid goal play by Fralick and 2 goals by Kohl. The Camels started slowly with the Polar Bears having a territorial advantage through the first 7 or 8 minutes. Conn had a great chance to take the lead about 8: when Kohl handcuffed Polar Bear goalie Crofton from the right circle and Connolly had a juicy rebound put back sail over the open goal mouth. Bowdoin then had a good chance about 1:30 later with Kennedy in on a semi break away on left wing, but Fralick handled her forehand from the left circle with her blocker. The 2nd saw Anctil take a feed from right wing for a one timer from the top of the crease that got under Crofton and stood in the crease only to be cleared away by an alert Bowdoin D at 3:30. The Polar Bears finally broke through Fralick when Finnerty made a nice play holding the blue line on the boards in front of the Conn bench and passing across left to Dachille dashing into the zone alone in on Fralick making her move stickside and then calmly sliding the puck into the net gloveside. The Camels quickly countered when Pagano spotted Kohl coming off the bench and made a nifty feed ahead from the neutral zone sending Kohl in clean on left wing. She had an open look from the left circle and beat Crofton with a wrist shot. The Camels withstood 2 Bowdoin power plays and scored the game winner midway in the 3rd. Beattie and Pagano assisted out of center on a quick thrust with Kohl breaking down right wing, getting an open look with support to her left and then rifling a wrist shot beating Crofton to her gloveside from the right circle. The Polar Bears had pressure to tie the score and with an offensive zone faceoff came with an extra attacker for a full 2:15 but were unable to score the tying goal. Round 2 will be played tomorrow at 3.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

At Watson this weekend. CC is going to be right their all season. Well coached team and tough. Coach Steele is doing a great job buying the groceries as Bill Parcells use to say.
Bowdoin definitely had a great recruiting year, a little slim on blue line may cost them in the end. Good luck to both teams

agree with Mr. PolarBear....good games this weekend. Kamels big loss...Igo out with broken ankle... just when she was hitting her stride after a so-so Frosh year...has taken the Kamels top line out of commission. PBears are a solid team...have to say goalie played well and made 3-4 spectacular saves....[but her rebounds will catch up to her when they play Midd or Amherst...can't live on the edge and win vs the top top teams]....PBear forwards are good and fast, but the D is below average. Can be pressured in their own end, even in the big Watson ice sheet... Conn had numerous chances to bury shots all weekend and couldn't...that was the diff in the end. Kamel Frosh continue to step up...Connolly and Kohl are making big strides.

Kohl is a terrific player with a very quick release. Both her Goals Friday were in transition. She has great vision and nice Hockey IQ. Bowdoin Goalie is very solid. Probably wanted one of those back Friday. She came back Saturday and played solid. Only goal was a Breakaway and nice play by the CC forward. The Bowdoin D is young 2 Freshman and 3 Sophomores playing a lot. They will improve as the season goes. The shots in both games were just about even. CC Goalie played great on Friday, she did get pulled on Saturday but I think that was just to see if that could spark a comeback. Brunswick is a nice spot to spend the weekend and see some great women's college hockey

the other key to the 2nd game [aside from CC not getting any 2nd chance shots on the large # of rebounds]...was the phenomenal job the PBears did in blocking shots...both by the D and backchecking F's....They easily blocked 20+ shots...without that solid effort [and that's really what shot blocking is] we may have had a different result on Sunday.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Good night of non-conference action for the NESCAC Tuesday. Middlebury ran into a hot McNamara in net for Utica, but squeaked out a 2-1 OT win (I watched the annoyingly commercial interrupted webcast). Did any watch other action? Bit disappointing to see the result for the Polar Bears? Big win for Colby over Holy Cross! Hamilton, Trinity and Wesleyan pitch shutouts.
