NESCAC season 2014-2015

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Good night of non-conference action for the NESCAC Tuesday. Middlebury ran into a hot McNamara in net for Utica, but squeaked out a 2-1 OT win (I watched the annoyingly commercial interrupted webcast). Did any watch other action? Bit disappointing to see the result for the Polar Bears? Big win for Colby over Holy Cross! Hamilton, Trinity and Wesleyan pitch shutouts.

3-6 loss to Southern Maine?? That loss could/should knock them out of #10 spot.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Pretty sure Trinity can handle Sacred Heart, but the four in conference series are another matter.
Bowdoin at Wesleyan-split
Colby at Conn-Camels need sweep at Dayton
Hamilton at Williams-ditto for the Ephs at Lansing-Chapman
and then there is Amherst at Middlebury-I think the Midd forwards (the Hlinka, Fluke, Young line is scary) are too much for the Lord Jeff D; my big question is Panther net play (or even who is to play goal); 3 points for the Panthers

Bowdoin takes 3pts from Wes
Kamels stub toe and only take 3pts from the Mules
Williams takes 3pts from Hammy
Midd sweeps the Jeffs [call me crazy but I don't see them as a top 10 team based on early season results]

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Middlebury 2
Amherst 2

This was, as with every tilt between these two teams, was a hard fought battle. Middlebury scores first in the first period with a nice drive from the point by Winslow and a tip by Watson at ice level and into the goal. Middlebury pressured hard for most of the period but wasn't able to get anything past the Evans, and the Defense kept the rebound to a minimum. Second period saw a much more energized Amherst squad, finally rewarded by Flom tipping a shot which bounded off of Jones' glove, off the far post, and slid across the whole goal mount to a slow stop just over the goal line on the near side. Middlebury's ability to generate offense was disrupted by their penalties. Just before the half way point Fluke takes an interference penalty, this time the Amherst power play produces, with some good puck movement across the blue line and a hard slap shot in that sneaks by Jones. Middlebury take this as a challenge and is rewarded a few minutes later with Winslow tipping the puck into the Amherst goal. The rest of the game was a continual back an forth, with both goalies making good saves. With about 15 seconds left in the third period, Middlebury makes a 2 on 2 break into the Amherst zone, with Winslow making a good shot, stopped by Evans, which is quickly turned around by Amherst, forcing Jones to make an even more amazing save with three second left. Overtime started much the way as the game was playing. Middlebury has most of the puck possession, but unable to take advantage. Amherst plays an aggressive defense and kept Middlebury out of the shooting range. With about 1 minute left in overtime, a bad change by Middlebury left Amherst with a 3 on 1 breakaway. A nice defensive play broke up the key pass, and the puck was quickly scooted out of the zone. And that's the way the game ended.

Very impressed by the Amherst squad. They are quick, with excellent ice awareness.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Amherst and Middlebury have hooked up for some epic battles over the years (the 3OT NESCAC final back in '07 comes to mind) and this evening's 2-2 OT standoff did not disappoint. The Panthers opened the scoring midway in the 1st when Mandigo dug the puck out from deep in the left wing corner, out up the half boards to Winslow; she passed back to Watson at left point; Watson walked off the boards and got a wrist shot through traffic which eluded Lord Jeff goalie Evans for the 1-0 lead. Amherst answered early in the 2nd when E. Martin drew a faceoff back to Flom in the left circle; Flom moved right and beat Panther goalie Jones with a quick shot up in off the gloveside post from the top of the circle. Amherst had three powerplay chances to gain the lead in the 2nd and although the Lord Jeffs moved the puck well and had excellent shots Jones thwarted their attempts to take the lead. Amherst did finally cash in a powerplay in the 3rd when E. Martin got the puck to Salmon in the left corner; Salmon moved it back out to Smith at left point; Smith moved right and her slap shot from the blueline beat Jones gloveside. Middlebury was able to tie the game at 13:49 of the 3rd. Mandigo again did the heavy lifting, grinding the puck out from the right corner to Bielawski at the point; she had an open look at goalie Evans and her drive was deftly tipped in by Winslow from the gloveside of the crease. Neither squad could notch a game winner in the 4x4 5 minutes of OT. This all goes to show what I know, as I was thinking the Hlinka, Fluke, Young line would lead the way for the Panthers (apologies due the Amherst D on this one), when in fact the Wulf, Mandigo, Winslow line produced both Midd goals this evening. Interesting to note Midd assessed 5 minors to only 1 called on the Lord Jeffs. Round 2 is tomorrow at 3.
Other NESCAC action this evening saw Hamilton and Williams skate to a 0-0 tie, Bowdoin and Wesleyan draw at 2-2 and Conn beat Colby 3-2.

For Williams - good goaltending from Cleroux and good coaching, keeping Elmira shooting from the outside most of the night and converting on their power play opportunities. But Elmira still the better team - shot count is a good indicator of the balance based on the period and a half I saw. That being said, Williams had a chance here - if they can keep the momentum they may have some upsets going into the tough end to their schedule after Colby this weekend - Bowdoin, Amherst, Middlebury, Conn.

Speaking of Conn, what is up there???? Great start, but since New Years they lose 9-0 to Adrian, go to OT against St. Olaf, split with Bowdoin and COLBY (!!??), and lose to Manhattanville tonight. I thought they had a legit chance to go all the way to the NCAA tourney but now clearly not so much. Cross-Check - what's the deal?

A "legit chance to go to NCAA's"?? [you may be the only one who ever thought that!]. Good team, but I don't think anyone was ready to punch their ticket to the tournament this year.

Honestly, major injuries to their top players are just plain killing this team. They were thin on D to begin with, now Pagano [best offensive D] is out with her arm in a sling; Sullivan [steady D] out with concussion; Igo [1st line FWD who had really come into her own] is out with a broken ankle; , another concussion takes out FWD Morgan...and last night their best forward, Izzi is on the ice and gets a knee to the head [probably intentional] and is out with a...you guessed it...concussion. Things are looking grim at the moment, as the schedule gets harder from hear out [Wes, Amherst, Midd, Willy]...and without your best players, it could be a tough go.

Weekend's Fearless Forecast....

Middy vs. Bowdoin...........Sweep for the Panthers
Willy vs. Colby.................Split 'em
Trinity vs. Hamilton..........Sweep for the Bantams
Wes vs. Conn..................3pts for the Cardinals

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Note that the Sunday game between Conn College and Wesleyan has been rescheduled to Friday night, 8:30 at Wes.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

The weather is making travel planning for the weekend difficult. Here in Old Lyme the forecast has practically changed hourly!
Williams at Colby-Ephs played Elmira a good 3rd on Tuesday; Colby has a 2 game winning streak; split
Conn at Wesleyan-Conn suffering depleted roster; Cardinal sweep
Trinity at Hamilton-tough switch to the Russell Sage size rink; 3 points for the Bantams
Middlebury at Bowdoin-time for the Panthers to dig in and play up to potential; Midd sweep

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

2-1 Midd end of 2. Midd scored early 2nd Hlinka from Young and Fluke. Bowdoin scored with Kennedy deflecting a shot by Bell and played much more in the Midd zone after scoring

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Why the late goalie change...injury to Crofton??

Just back from Brunswick; Crofton suffered a lower body injury trying to make the save on Young's goal. She had moved to her right as Fluke came out from behind the net and appeared to pull or strain a hip/knee/back lunging back to her left as Young pounced on the rebound. No player contact that I saw right in front of where I was standing. She was assisted off ice and was not really moving well at all.

Saw it on the video feed - one of the slowest exits from the ice I have ever seen by an injured player. She was clearly in a LOT of pain and seemed virtually unable to move one or both of her legs and was totally supported by teammates and training staff when she got to the bench. Hoping she is OK....

Ouch! Well as they say that's why you have Role players. Hopefully the backup can step up!

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Last night's game at Watson was in doubt until Fluke nailed an empty netter from in front of the Bowdoin bench with :02 left to play. A tripping called behind the Middlebury net at 17:51 of the 3rd allowed Polar Bear Coach O'Neil to pull her goalie and skate 6x4 for a full 2 minutes of pressure trying to tie at 3, but in spite of controlling the puck most of the 2 minutes, Bowdoin never got the puck to the front of the net for the equalizer.
The Panthers came out flying and took the lead at 5:24 of the 1st. VanKula dug the puck out of the right wing corner and out to Laven on right point; she had enough space for a slap shot that changed direction through traffic and eluded Polar Bear goalie Crofton 5 hole. Midd was moving the puck well out of their defensive end and played much of the 1st pressuring Crofton.
The Panthers extended their advantage early in the 2nd with Fluke grinding behind the Bowdoin net, causing a D turnover and getting the puck to Young; Young came out stickside of Crofton and made a perfect feed for Hlinka to shovel into the net from the top of the crease, beating Crofton gloveside. Bowdoin broke through a couple of minutes later. Midd had iced the puck and the Polar Bears won the draw in the left faceoff circle; the puck came to Bell on the left half boards and her low shot was deflected by Kennedy from Midd goalie Jones' stickside of the crease to make it 2-1. The score energized the Polar Bears and they continued to pepper Jones the rest of the period and much of the 3rd. Jones lost her stick and had to scramble to cover up in action at her stickside post about 10:30 of the 2nd. She was tested again at about 5:45 of the 3rd when Dachille cycled off the right side and got the puck to the net with Bourque and Finnerty parked on the doorstep. The Panthers scored a powerplay goal after a penalty called for interference on a faceoff in the circle left wing side. Winslow ground down low and Fluke came out with the puck from behind the goal line on Crofton's stickside. Crofton made the stop on Fluke, but the puck deflected onto Young's stick and her forehand found the twine, up gloveside. Crofton was injured attempting the second save and was assisted off ice with great difficulty. Less than a minute later Bowdoin pulled within one when a fierce scrum in the slot saw McNeil get the puck to Kennedy who buried it from the slot, up over a sprawling Jones. Bowdoin had chances during their 2 minutes of 6x4, but the Panther D stayed in their box and kept the puck on the perimeter most of that time.
Round 2 this afternoon at 3. Sorry to say I will be watching online, as weather fears caused me to change plans and make it a round trip to Brunswick yesterday.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Watching the Bowdoin feed online with no announcer. Midd leads 2-0 after 1. Findley in net for Polar Bears against Marsh for Panthers. Anyone have news on the injury to Crofton? Hard to say about the scoring. First Midd goal on the powerplay and second very quickly at even strength.
