NESCAC season 2014-2015

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Not too surprised by Wesleyan to date - seem to have won the games I would have expected. They always split with Williams to open the season and beat Sacred Heart. Thought they might have a chance to beat Amherst (1 OT game) and/or Holy Cross, but not shocked they didn't. Another team that started slow last year. Saw 1 of their games via webcast. The Schildhaus/Jankowski/Sarosi line is very strong and fast. Expected more this season from Mead (based on the 1 game admittedly small sample, but she isn't showing up on the stat sheets either).

Am surprised by Conn College. Controlling their trips to the penalty box better this season and it appears to be paying off in wins. Appears that they learned a lesson last season and are applying the learning successfully.

Agree...Mead is arguably the most talented kid on that Wes team...but has not shown it...Probably a lot more to the story unfortunately. As for the Conn penalties...we shall see...still take too many for my taste, although you can't argue that their PK is about the best in D3 [I suppose practice makes perfect??];)

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Little snow falling outside Kreitzberg. Not too big a turnout so far but still 16 minutes until face off

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

No score after 1. Fast 1st with few stoppages and no penalties. Norwich had some looks early but Amherst carried play toward the end of the period. Shots 9-5 Amherst

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

2-1 Norwich end of 2. Schwenzfeier with both Cadet goals a pp and nifty breakaway. Ryan for Amherst on pp

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Light snow was falling in Northfield this evening, but the faithful making it to Kreitzberg witnessed a spirited contest with the Cadets besting the visiting Lord Jeffs in the closing minutes. The 1st saw both goalies with fine plays keeping the score tied at nil. Amherst's Evans made a very nice left pad save denying Moore from a low angle at 10:20. Norwich's Robert answered with a neat blocker deflection to stone Salmon who was in with open space for a backhand from right of the crease. Amherst had started the 1st slowly but was gaining time in their offensive zone as the period wound down. The 2nd opened with the first penalties of the game. Each side took a penalty in their offensive zone (I am sure there was joy on both benches). Amherst had the first opportunity and was getting the puck to the net but was unable to get a forward pouncing on a loose puck. Norwich capitalized on their powerplay when Anderson slipped a pass from low right wing across the goal mouth to Schwenzfeier at Evans' stickside post for the score into open net. Amherst's Martin then made a play stepping up on a clearing pass, holding the zone and breaking in 2x1 only to be tripped. On the ensuing powerplay Tank won the puck passing to Flom on the left half boards. Flom fed Ryan on the blue line and she drifted to her right for an open alley and hit the net with a long high shot to tie the score at 1-1. Schwenzfeier broke the tie collecting a loose puck on the right of her D zone and lugging it on a clean break away, taking her time on her forehand, dangling, drawing Evans to the puck and then deftly tucking it into the short gloveside of the net. Norwich was playing in the Lord Jeff zone as the 2nd came to an end, but was unable to extend their 2-1 lead. The 3rd opened with Sullivan tying the score for Amherst, stuffing the puck home as it hung in the crease. Almost immediately Norwich answered, and apologies to Cross and Amato, but I (and a few others I asked about the play after the game) totally missed it. The Lord Jeffs cashed in a powerplay goal to tie midway in the 3rd. Flom dropped a nice feed from the left wing back to Ryan center ice inside the blueline and her drive made it through traffic on net. Robert made the initial stop but Tank jammed it home for the 3-3 tie. Following an Amherst time out, Norwich controlled the puck in their offensive zone, cycling in the left wing corner with Anderson getting the puck to Schwenzfeier who drew D advancing on net and then fed Joyce in an open space for a low shot from the edge of the left circle, in under Evans. Amherst had a last rush as time ran out with Evans off for the extra attacker. Salmon broke in zone deep down right wing and she got a pass in to Harris, but the attempt was just wide of Robert's gloveside post and the buzzer ended things with Cadets on top 4-3. I thought refs Savoie and Kaselouskas did a nice job calling only 6 penalties in a game that was physical and competitive but was never out of their control.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

4-1 end of 2 here at Spartan Arena. Winslow with a pretty break away and Watson on the pp. Stephens keeping the score from ballooning with her net play. Shots 30-13

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

5-2 final. Shots 46-20. Howard for Spartans and lavender for Midd scored in the 3rd

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Hope everyone made it home safely yesterday. The ride from Barre down I-89 to Bethel and across the Green Mountains to Rutland was over snow covered roads, with the occasional 4 wheel drive vehicle inconveniently parked in the woods by the side of the trail. Leaving the Spartan Arena and heading south for the Amherst-Manhattanville game saw temperatures rise above freezing and it was just rainy and quite foggy below Ludlow.
There was a good crowd of loyal fans on hand for the Middlebury-Castleton tilt. We witnessed the Panthers playing their most complete game of the season. Castleton goalie Stephens did yeoman service in net for the Spartans and kept the score close as it was making 41 saves on 46 shots. Midd came out flying and netted 2 goals within 23 seconds early in the 1st. The Panther forecheck produced the initial score with Hlinka, Fluke and Young grinding in the right wing corner. Young carried behind the goal and fed Fluke for a quick shot beating Stephens stickside up. Seconds later Moreau took a long shot from the right point which deflected off the scrum where it was collected by Van Kula who roofed a neat backhand past Stephens. Late in the period Castleton pulled within one when Pion grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone, got the puck to Kilroy, who fed ahead to Daniels who broke in on left wing with a D back and trailer to the right. Daniels blast from the top of the left circle beat Midd net minder Marsh gloveside. The Panthers put two more on the board in the 2nd. Mandigo won a battle in the D zone, got the puck to Wulf and she spotted Winslow breaking through the neutral zone. Winslow made a nifty step inside and around a D at the blue line and was in alone, took her time and wristed a forehand from the gloveside of the crease in five hole. Watson added a powerplay goal late in the 2nd on a wrist shot through traffic from the blue line; Young and Bielawski credited with assists on the play. The 3rd opened with some Spartan pressure on Marsh. Marsh made a big stop on Spidle alone at the stickside of the crease at 2:20. Kilroy and Daniels ground away in the right wing corner with the puck coming out to Howard in the slot; she beat Marsh through the scrum with a low wrister. Consecutive minors to Spartans put Stephens in a shooting gallery. The Midd powerplay was able to control the puck in zone for a full 1:10 without letting up but Stephens kept the score at 4-2. Laven closed out the scoring stepping up on a Fluke pass and lofting a shot from the top of the right circle into the net. I am sure this is the game the Panthers hope they can take out west for their trip to visit the Soaring Eagles in Pine Valley early in the New Year!

After watching both games this weekend at Watson, Bowdoin is legit! Best recruiting class the coach has brought in since her tenure. Should make for an interesting NESCAC chase

The Polar Bears have most all their NESCAC action ahead of them (although it is great to have the 4 points from the Colby games "in the bank"...think back to last season). They face key challenges with Conn College 1/9-1/10 and Middlebury 1/23-1/24 in the friendly confines of Watson, but go on the road for their series at Williams 1/30-1/31, Trinity 2/6-2/7 and season finale at Orr against Amherst 2/21-2/22. I watched the Norwich game stream and they certainly put up as good if not a better fight than Amherst gave the Cadets Friday in Kreitzberg.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Camels stomp UMB at Dayton 7-0 final!!!
Maybe it wasn't Kamel Koolaide after all???

Maybe Jim Jones Punch?

Penalties way down...shots on goal way up...getting contributions from Soph and Fr. class...goaltending deep and solid. If they improve their scoring % [leave tonight's aberration out] then who knows...they could be a 'contenda' for top 4 NESCAC...maybe higher if some of the old-boys slip...

Hard to figure 7-0 when UMBoston just tied Bowdoin last week....something seems odd...we will know on Jan 9th:)

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Hope you have all had a Merry, Merry or Happy, Happy and are looking forward to the NESCAC invasion of the upper Midwest in the New Year!
Can Bowdoin, Conn College, Trinity and Williams run the table and return east a collective 8-0? The obvious obstacles toward that end are #8 St. Thomas (5-2-1) and #9 Adrian (7-0-2). The collective record of St. Olaf, Marian and Hamline comes in at 5-22-2. Bowdoin impressed people with their 1-0 loss to Norwich. Conn College has ties with Trinity, Hamilton and Salve Regina, but ripped UMB 7-0. Both Conn and Bowdoin earned 7 points in the most recent USCHO poll. KRACH is not kind to St. Thomas, with a #23 ranking and a strength of schedule rating of #42. KRACH likes Adrian with a #4 ranking and #12 strength of schedule, although the 2-2 tie with UMB caused them a drop in the final USCHO poll prior to the break.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Any of you among the 56 fans in attendance? Shots were 42-21 in favor of the Camels, but they needed an OT powerplay goal for the win.
