NESCAC season 2014-2015

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Best of luck to her.

She is not listed on the Amherst 14-15 Hockey roster, either, which (somewhat to my surprise) is already posted on the college's website.

Obviously a lot more to the story which will all come out eventually...if and when there is a trial [the amount of the bond tells me that's a real possibility].

Pre-Season Picks:
1. Williams
2. Midd
3. Trinity
4. Amherst
5. Bowdoin
6. Conn
7. Wes
8. Colby
9. Hammy

Here we go..

1. Middlebury
2. Conn College
3. Bowdoin
4. Williams
5. Amherst
6. Wesleyan
7. Trinity
8. Hamilton
9. Colby

I put Middlebury first because, well, Middlebury is Middlebury . I think, after not going to the NCAA tournament last year, Coach Mandigo will rally the troops, so to speak. Conn College had a lot of good freshmen last year and I think they'll step up. Bowdoin and Williams were a tie for me.
I bumped Trinity down because it should be interesting to see the team's response after knowing the coach was looking elsewhere after only being there a year. I'm also curious to see their recruiting class because I'm sure it can be difficult to focus when you may have a wandering eye for another school/location.

My guess:
1) Middlebury
2) Amherst
3) Conn College
4) Williams
5) Wesleyan
6) Bowdoin
7) Trinity
8) Colby
9) Hamilton

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Wow - Conn College as a top 3 seed for a couple of you? We all remember that they finished 8th last season and only have one public recruit that the forum mentions, right? Why would they move from 8th to 2nd of 3rd....? While I suspect they will finish better, really struggling with such a high finish prediction.

I also can't see a top 3 finish. They lost Ms. Dumont [their only real offensive force] and there is nobody near her level on the current roster. They have solid goaltending, good depth and size...but new recruits are a real unknown. Possibly a top 4 team if they get more out of the Soph class and more importantly, learn how to win [i.e. beat the teams they are supposed to beat and find ways to split series with the traditional power teams].

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Finally time to get the season started. Eight teams take the ice on Saturday:
Williams@Wesleyan
Colby@Middlebury
Conn College@Trinity
and Hamilton and Amherst play home and home
Polar Bears still thinking the other type of hockey
Any educated guesses, uninformed speculation or predictions?

Re-evaluated my earlier prediction...I think Wes will be higher [retained most of their top scoring from last year...goalie is solid...they could be top 5].

As for the weekend results...fearless forecaster says:

Purple Bovines and the Red Birds split in two close games.
Middies sweeps the Albino Mules [could be looking at 2 big losses w/o Wheeler in goal].
Camels and Roosters split [two low scoring ties a possibility?].
Amherst sweeps the Conts [maybe one game will be close]

Prediction
Bowdoin will have the rookie of the year in the NESCAC this year and she will be from Texas!

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Great to get the NESCAC season started with a quick trip up to Middlebury. Stop in Rochester (Heart of the Green Mountains) at Sandy's Books and Bakery for some supplies, then up through the Middlebury Gap with snow on the ground (at an air temp of 27 up there) near the Snow Bowl. I was a little late getting to Kenyon (picking up an order at the Vermont Soap Company), but had some time to catch up on first years before the puck dropped to start the season.
The Panthers showed a more explosive offense than they have had in recent seasons. Colby graduated the first team All-NESCAC goalie and were unable to give Middlebury the fits they have in several recent match ups.
The Panthers converted an early powerplay chance when Watson got a shot through traffic from right point; Mule net minder Crites made the initial stop, but Fluke grabbed the rebound and jammed it home from the goalie's stickside. Middlebury added to the lead late in the period when Wardwell fed the puck ahead to Sullivan in center ice; Sullivan put a nifty pass on Aiello's stick and she split the D and then picked the upper stickside corner with a wrist rocket from the left dot.
The Panther lead grew to 3-0 early in the 2nd when Bielawski passed across to Wardwell on the left point; her drive got on net and was put back by Wulf from Crites' stickside. The rest of the period was choppy with 5 penalties assessed, including an embellishment call on Midd (a point of emphasis this season).
3rd period saw the Panthers explode for 4 scores and the 7-1 final. Winslow dug the puck out in the left corner as a Colby penalty expired; she fed up the half boards to Fluke who spotted Watson at left point. Watson had space and walked in wristing one in from the high slot. Colby got on the board when Gary carried wide down left wing, got the puck deep into the corner to Guarente; she was able to turn around the D and walk out in front of Midd goalie Jones coming from the stickside corner; Jones made a stop from in close but the puck went into the slot and Donato buried it up in Jones' stickside corner. Midd answered with Schaeder advancing the puck along the neutral zone boards to Sherman; Sherman streaked wide on right wing and made a perfect feed across to Bielawski for a one timer from the top of the crease. The Panthers added another pair late in the 3rd. Biewlawski got a long shot through from right point; Mandigo fought free for a put back in close and handcuffed Crites leaving Aiello for a tap in second goal of the game. Less than a minute later Fluke got the puck back to Moreau on left point and she fed along the blueline to Laven; Laven made a nice move stepping around a Mule and her long shot found the net for the 7-1 final score.
Round two this afternoon at Kenyon at 3.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Hey CrossCheck - looking at the CC - Trinity game sheet from Sunday - did they really call an equipment/mouthpiece penalty on one of the CC girls??!! I can't remember ever seeing that actually called in a college game (many warnings, never a penalty).

Yes...but honestly, I don't remember exactly what happened...I did see a mouthpiece laying on the ice at one point during the game...perhaps that clued the refs in that something was amiss...

As an aside, it looked like both teams have picked up a couple Frosh who can play and contribute right away [#22 for Conn and #14 for Trinity in particular].

Kelcie Finn ( Trinity ) and Lily Conolly (CC) both from The Bay State Breakers program South Shore of Mass and I am not their mother. They are both excellent players. Coach Steele was very excited to get Lily in the lineup to play with her Bay State Breaker team mate Michaela Igo !
