NESCAC season 2014-2015

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Kelcie Finn ( Trinity ) and Lily Conolly (CC) both from The Bay State Breakers program South Shore of Mass and I am not their mother. They are both excellent players. Coach Steele was very excited to get Lily in the lineup to play with her Bay State Breaker team mate Michaela Igo !

Finn played her last 2-3 years with Assabet Valley. While she was good at the Breakers, she really developed her game to a college level at Assabet (particularly the last year when she was a PG at Westminster).

well then I may have seen her over the course of Tier 1 travels but didn't remember the name [hard to stand out on Assabutt U19 or U19 Red team what with all the Olympians, etc.

But even a quick look, and you noticed #14 on Trinity...along with #19 [SSM kid]. Connolly looks like a keeper...will probably have a few Frosh growing pains, but she has a good motor and a nose for the net. Like her game a lot [based on a 2 game sample but some things are obvious]:p

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Fearless Forecaster's Weekend Predictions...

Bowdoin vs. Colby...3 points for the Poobears
Hamilton vs. Conn....3 points for the Camels
Middleberry vs. Trinity....4 points for the Panthers
Wesleyan vs. Amherst...Split 'em

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Bowdoin and Colby-the home and home series; Alfond is a tough place to play after the big Watson ice; Thulin looked pretty good in net for the Mules in losing 2-0 to Midd Sunday; Polar Bears may be depleted due to NCAA field hockey championship; Bowdoin got off to a terrible start last season losing both Colby games-split

Wesleyan@Amherst-hope to take in the matinee Saturday; is this the year the Cardinals become contenders; the Lord Jeffs have most of their offense back, but Evans needed to pitch 2 shutouts to take 4 points from Hamilton-split

Hamilton@Conn College-long trip and season for the Continentals; CC needs more offense, but Fralick is one of the best in the NESCAC-Camel sweep

Middlebury@Trinity-the Panthers return proven goalies in Jones and Marsh, a seasoned D corps and look like they added size and speed up front; Bantams gave Conn a tussle in their opening series-Panther sweep

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Congratulations due the Bantams!!! Down 2 five minutes into the game they out played Midd from then on and won the next 55 minutes 4-1. Final 4-3.

Good to see the Bantams defeat the Evil Empire...crossing the fingers they can do it again tomorrow afternoon.

Conn putting a lot of pucks on net this year, and they are starting to go in...Hamilton was game and played very well at times this weekend, especially in 1st period Sat. after the 3-3 tie yesterday...but couldn't get the early goal they needed...Chester went the distance in goal and pitched the shutout. Freshman Kate Kohl broke open a close game late in the 3rd with her second of the game, and Big, Bad, Julie Beattie scored her first NCAA goal on a big slapper late in the contest.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

I know everyone thinks their conference is the most competitive, but as we close out the 2nd weekend of NESCAC play, it sure looks like you had better bring your "A" game any time you take the ice in this conference.
Lots of great action this weekend. I saw Conn College trail Hamilton 3-1 and then come back to tie on an extra attacker goal when Coach Steele aggressively rolled the dice with 2 minutes left in regulation. The NESCAC 4x4 format for OT then resulted in confusion on the timing of Continental penalties in extra time, but Hamilton escaped with the tie. Amherst saw Wesleyan give them a tussle Saturday afternoon at Orr Arena. The Lord Jeffs led 2-0 early with Salmon showing why she probably has the best hands in the NESCAC. First goal she won the draw in the right circle to Toupal on the half board; she passed back to Smith at right point and her drive rebounded to Salmon who backhanded the puck up and in. Minutes later Salmon forechecked as Wesleyan was breaking out from deep in their gloveside corne, curled across the slot on her forehand and Toupal deftly inserted her shot 5 hole from the top of the crease for the 2-0 advantage. The Cardinals got on the board on the powerplay with Schildhaus working behind the Amherst goal line, getting the puck to Jankowski, who was able to score from an extreme angle coming out from Lord Jeff goalie Evans stickside. Tank then made it 3-1 with a goal from in close. Wesleyan then converted a powerplay seconds before Amherst had killed a 5x3 at the end of the 2nd, with Wasnick jamming one home, assists to Schildhaus and Jankowski. The lone score of the 3rd came when Schildhaus grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone and flipped a long, high floater that eluded Evans' and tied the game at 3-3. The game winner came on the powerplay when Salmon fed E. Martin at right point. The 4x3 open ice gave her an open look drive that was kicked out into the high slot, Smith swooped in and buried a one timer up.
A quick run back to Hartford afforded the opportunity to take in the Panthers visiting the Bantams. Middlebury roared out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Bielawski and Sherman in the first 4 minutes, only to see Trinity answer with 2 goals in less than a minute. Farrell collected a D zone turnover and walked into the slot unchecked, beating Jones with a laser up to her gloveside. Then Herr jammed home a powerplay chance from Jones' stickside with the heavy work behind the net by Finn and Fitzgerald. Sherman then scored her 2nd of the wild 1st period to make it 3-2. Early in the 2nd Tani scored unassisted on a nice backhand form the left of the crease. The eventual game winner came when Farrell broke in 2x1 with Fitzgerald on her left. Farrell took her time and then deftly fed left to the uncheck Fitzgerald for the one timer score. Hats off to Trinity for circling the wagons after trailing by 2 early. They worked hard and were winning the one on one battles consistently in the 3rd and showing impressive speed on there breakouts.
Rematch today at 4 if you are in the Hartford area.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Midd has a bit more spring in their stride today. 3-1 after 1. Goals by Fluke Young and Mandigo. Did not get Trin scorer late in 1st

No argument here. I love the fact that Norwich has three games against Amherst, Bowdoin and Middlebury. I'm sure there just as happy to be playing Norwich as well. It's obviously the toughest conference in D-3 top to bottom. Like to see it expand ( Tufts maybe Skidmore) just not enough spots for all the girls looking for higher education and hockey.

Skidmore is not a nescac school....As for Tufts...No clue how a school with a men's team...in the heart of hockey country outside Boston....manages not to field a team. Bates...well, Bates is Bates LOL;)

When I suggested Skidmore, I was thinking more on the line of compareable schools (#37 Liberal Arts according to USNR). However I just noticed there mens team is ECAC East.
Tufts baffles me as well. Not to mention there mens team plays in an oversized metal shed 25 traffic lights away from campus. UMASS (Boston) and Babson are proof what a rink on campus could do for your programs. What a great option Tufts would be for Boston area Prep School kids to play hockey and get a great education..
