NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

You sound like a whiney Cardinal parent [there were plenty of those at Dayton this weekend...talk about 'undisciplined'...I haven't seen such poor behavior at a nescac game in years....yelling, banging the glass, swearing, etc.].

You must have been at a different rink than I was. I didn't see or hear any banging on glass or swearing at either game.

I did see a major penalty and misconduct by a Conn player, which was about the dirtiest hit I've seen in college hockey. And 8 penalties per game called against CC, which could easily have been double that, but the refs were "letting them play."

"Dirty"? Yes.

But fine, count me as a "whiney Cardinal parent".

got it.

As for the penalties, most were, as I said above...interference, hooking, tripping, etc. and have been all year. As for the "Checking" penalties, those are always a very subjective call in women's hockey and the refs [God luv 'em] are just all over the map...some games an accidental bump = 2min, other games an assault & battery goes uncalled.

As for the "dirtiest hit I've seen in college hockey"...not sure what you saw but it was not a dirty play, and with all due respect to the zebras, it most certainly was not a hit from behind [both players went for a lose puck along the boards, arrived at the same time, and there was contact, shoulder to shoulder...both girls hit the boards together...#10 is a bigger stronger kid and more than anything, the sound [and yelling parents] caused the arm to go up]. I could have lived with a 2min, but it should not have been a 5min and the DQ.

...IMO, they are not a dirty team...far from it. That said, if they don't figure it out soon, they will be in huge trouble.

Apparently, we were at different games.

Just for giggles, I checked the stats.

For the record, of the 16 penalties called on CC over the 2 games, 5 were for body checking, 1 cross checking, 2 roughing, 1 each for hitting from behind and game misconduct.

6 were holding, hooking or tripping.

But you're right, the "hitting from behind" was the wrong call: should have been a boarding call. They were 4 feet from the boards when the CC player laid the Wes player into the boards. I had a pretty good angle on that play.

For giggles...go through all the games which will confirm my analysis [most common calls are interference, tripping, holding, checking] which as anyone who knows the game realizes, is totally subjective and IMO rarely "dirty" in womens hockey.

I also had a very good view of the play. Contact, yes, boarding, no [perhaps why it took the refs about 5 minutes of conference time to agree on the call]. Not when your contact is shoulder to shoulder and both players are moving in the same direction and going for the puck.

P.S. as for glass banging and swearing, apparently you didn't see the fine gent with the grey hair down near his ***...hard to miss, but apparently you watched a different game than I did.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Well said obserbear. The PBs controlled much of the play on Saturday and when they let slip, Crofton was there to slam the door. You can find video highlights of Krakower's "seeing eye" goal and Jones' lunging last minute OT save at http://community.middlebury.edu/~foph/windex.html Also in the video is Jones poke-checking the following centering pass to MacNiel... it was a pretty feed by Kennedy andf a heads up play by Jones who also played a phenomenal game. If PBs can maintain that level of "work" and the goaltending resembles anything like Saturday they will be in there in March...

Big tilt up in Orr this evening when the Cadets come to call. Amherst has gone 5-1-1 since their pre-break 12/8 4-3 loss at Norwich and could really use a win over a presume to be ranked NCAA team! Norwich followed the win over the Lord Jeffs with road losses to Plattsburgh and Elmira, but is riding a 5 game winning streak coming into Orr this evening. I haven't seen the Cadets since those early December match ups with Bowdoin and Amherst, but Amherst looked on their game during the Middlebury series. Should be a good one!

Trinity 2-0 over Sacred Heart tonight. They rolled four lines and dominated from beginning to end. It should/could have been a lot more than 2 goals; the Scacred Heart keeper made some great saves from in close, and Trinity had great chances but shot over or wide of the net at least 10 or 12 times. Pujols was never really tested getting the shut-out; most of the game was played in the offensive zone.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Every once in a while "you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right" to paraphrase a ditty from back in the day. Last night's game between Norwich and Amherst provided such a moment! It was a fairly even contest, hard fought and the Cadets came away with a 2-1 win on Sharman's unassisted goal midway in the 2nd. What made the moment for me was the officiating and the beauty of it all. I am not alone in having whined about the zebras in this or that game, but the ref crew of Dorion and Zanetti called a game that represented, for me, the evolution of women's DIII hockey coincident with the officiating. There were a mere 5 minors assessed in what was a physical, not rough, contest. The calls made were for a level of conduct that impeded the flow of the game, play frequently went 3 or 4 minutes without stopping and I had the sense the refs were part of the flow, not controlling the flow.
The game opened with 3:37 of uninterrupted back and forth action before the first stoppage in play. Stuart, in net for the Lord Jeffs, was tested first by Sharman's wrist shot from the left dot about 8: and then at 10:20 Stuart made a great stop of a redirect by Charron who had space at the top of the crease. Amherst took a rare, undisciplined penalty following a rush into the Norwich zone on which they got the puck to the net, caused Norwich tender Carrier to lose her stick and nearly took the lead. The penalty on the ensuing Cadet break out of their D zone was costly. On the powerplay Charron worked on the right half boards out to Sharman; Sharman had space and launched a slap shot that was deflected by MacKinnon at the top of the crease in under Stuart. Amherst answer with a powerplay goal of their own early in the 2nd with the puck dropped back from Harris on the left side to Ryan at the blue line; Ryan passed across to Flom, who walked to mid blue line, hesitated and then rocketed a long slap shot beating Carrier, who was screened, up. The Cadet forecheck and touchy, in your sweater style of play (which the Editor pointed out was the style taught by her now ex in his coaching days "let them know you're there" Canadian style, eh) was causing the Lord Jeffs to develop poor puck management in their D zone and it cost them in the 2nd. Following a good Amherst chance about 7:50 when Carrier stuffed E. Martin at the top of the crease off a nice feed off the right half boards from Culhane, Norwich scored the game winner off a sloppy breakout up their left wing. The puck was thrown into center and Sharman swooped upon it, skated to her left on her forehand and beat Stuart up with a wrister from the high slot. Amherst did not go quietly and although Norwich outshot them in the 3rd the Lord Jeffs had a good opportunity when they got the puck to the net at 17:13. Bodies were flying and piling up in the net and eventually coincidental minors were assessed for roughing. Amherst's Tank got off a wrister from the slot that resulted in a rebound to Harris, but her put back was just wide of Carrier's gloveside post at 18:45. Although Amherst had the extra attacker on for a full minute they could not notch the equalizer and the Cadets preserved the 2-1 win.

Great recap George!

Big win for the Cadets to keep their hopes of possibly hosting a NCAA quarterfinal alive. Norwich will still need to win out most likely and definitely need a win over Middlebury on Feb. 19 but they at least have an outside shot of 2E now. A loss last night would have most likely relegated them to battling for 4E and 5E with Amherst.

Now it's a three-horse race for 2E with Elmira, Middlebury and Norwich. Elmira could make some major strides, or lose some this weekend with a huge two-game series at the Murray against the Cardinals.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

It's time:

- Williams - Bowdoin - Both teams playing well. Bowdoin has home ice advantage and big game experience. Williams hasn't had a good season in a while, but has the blissful ignorance of a young team unfamiliar with losing on their side and is riding high. Tough call - I'm going to go for a split if only to give everybody a chance to tell me how wrong I am.
- Amherst - Conn - No sign Conn solves the penalty issue yet, so assuming they won't. Amherst sweeps. if Conn stays out of the box, they could surprise on home ice.
- Middlebury - Hamilton - Long trip for Midd. Won't matter. Midd sweeps.
- Colby - Trinity - Long trip for Colby. Will matter. Trinity win and a tie.
