NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Polar Bears go for the sweep at Dayton! They can climb all the way into a tie for 3rd in the NESCAC with another win!
GO U BEARS!!!

So much for our learned speculation on things NESCAC!
Made the quick trip up a couple of exits on I-95 to watch the Polar Bears take on the Camels. Bowdoin cashed in 2 powerplay chances and fended off most of a Camel 5x3, then got a late goal for their first NESCAC win of the season.
Conn took an early lead when Brier fed Pagano in the slot for a point blank one time rocket under Bowdoin goalie Crofton. The Polar Bears evened things with a powerplay goal a few minutes later when Andrews grabbed an errant Camels clearing pass in the slot, had space and got a hard shot on Conn goalie Fralick; the rebound was to the gloveside circle and Kennedy's low shot was in the net back stickside.
The Polar Bears took the lead on another powerplay early in the 2nd. Ganoung made a play on left point keeping the puck in the zone and passing across to Tang; her shot from inside the blueline was high and made it through traffic beating Fralick up. My notes are that Bowdoin killed most of the Camel 5x3 powerplay later in the 2nd, doing a nice job clogging shooting lanes and keeping the puck away from Crofton and the net, but the Camels finally got the puck inside when Igo found Kallen in the slot for a backhand; Crofton made the initial stop, but Kallen put back from her gloveside found the net to tie at 2-2. This is all at odds with the minor officials version as reported by collegehockeystats.net
The 3rd saw both goalies making plays to keep things even. Fralick made a nice right pad stop on a MacNeil drive from the high slot about 5 minutes in. Then Fralick stopped Feroe on a Polar Bear 2x1 rush at 6:30 of the period. Bowdoin's Crofton made a nifty grab with her catcher on Dumont's backhand from the edge of the left circle at the 9 minute mark. The game winner came with Bourque working the puck up the right side, out to Lane at the point for a long shot, through traffic and on net. Fralick made the stop, but was down and Nardelli put the puck in from the top of the crease.

Other than description of the first goal, the rest was way off. Camels dominated from mid-2nd on...controlled the 3rd only to give up a fluke goal late and lose. Tough loss for young team. Lets see how the bounce back

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

I haven't had the chance to crosscheck the facts but I did see a great game this afternoon at Dayton Arena in New London. The Polar Bears appeared cruising to an easy win, dominating the first 2 periods, outshooting the Camels 29-17 and building a 4-1 lead, only to see their fifth goal, midway in the 3rd, prove the ultimate game winner. The Camels stormed back with 3 unanswered goals over 7 minutes, including a lovely coast to coast, off to the races, break away by Dumont to make it 5-3. Dumont completed her hat trick with 19 seconds on the clock and Conn had a face off in the Bowdoin end, Dumont won the draw back to Pagano, only to see Bourque selflessly dive blocking the drive from the blueline.
Bottom line, Bowdoin came south with no points in NESCAC play and is riding home with 4 points, tied with much of the conference (trailing Amherst, Middlebury and 3rd place Williams). Two young teams with lots of conference play to go.

No comments on Williams sweeping Trinity? Hearing that Williams outplayed (and outshot) Trinity most of the weekend coming off the break cold (first game in 30+ days) and with Trinity having swept USM last weekend. Williams on the upswing? They play Plattsburgh Tuesday night...

Williams is much improved and as I noted a few months ago, if they ever get the goaltending, can be a dangerous team, as the sweep of the Bantams shows.

As for PooBears and Camels...they were two very entertaining games...Unfortunately for the Camels, they must have thought the game started at 4:00 rather than 3:00. If the game was 30 sec. longer, I have no doubt it would have gone to OT. P.S. Pagano's final shot was not blocked...she tried to 'dipsey-doodle' her way around the sliding defender...and did so....but I think lost her angle in the process....and put a rocket about 3" wide of the net....Had it been on target I very much doubt it would have been saved since at that point a lot were going in.

Nevertheless, the biggest shocker of the weekend that nobody mentioned was that 2-2 affair in Middletown. I thought that was a typo but nope! Getting Meade back is big for the Red & Black.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Conn College visits Colby-split, although Dumont is a native and seems to be on a tear
Williams visits Hamilton-Ephs played a decent game against the Red Army; Williams sweep
Wesleyan visits the friendly confines of the Sid-PB win and a tie
Middlebury visits Amherst-these two have played a lot of great hockey over the past 7 or 8 seasons; I think this bigger Midd may have a bit too much net presence and will rebound from the Wesleyan weekend; the Lord Jeffs are young and have nothing to lose

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Amherst webcast did not broadcast last night's game. Box score SOG (34-15) suggests Jeffs dominated game with Midd goalie standing on her head. Two PP goals on 3 chances did the home team in it appears. Hope the webcast is up today as the rematch should be a good one.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

I don't know what happened to the JeffCast. Hugh, the announcer was in the booth with the cam operator, but they obviously could not overcome the technical difficulties. A shame, as it was one of those memorable tilts. Midd scored their first pp goal late in the 1st. Ugalde pinched off an attempt to clear up the left wing half boards, and fed back to Watson on left point. Watson walked the blueline and then floated a perfect pass to Krakower for a one timer from the top edge of the right faceoff circle. Krakower's blast beat Amherst goalie Stuart up inside the gloveside post. Amherst tied things off the faceoff starting the 2nd. E. Martin grabbed the puck on the right of the dot and saw Salmon breaking ahead left of the high slot; the pass she made was tipped ever so slightly by a Midd D, Salmon made the catch and rocketed a wrist shot from the top left of the slot beating Midd goalie Jones up across to the gloveside. The game winner came on the next Midd pp. The puck came up the left half boards and was fed back to Mandigo at the left dot; she had space for a wrist shot with first Schulman putting back the rebound, followed by Joyce for the score. The Lord Jeffs came close to the equalizer on a pp late in the period only to see Jones bar the door with an acrobatic series, robbing an open Culhane one timer from her stickside nd following with a couple of saves while prone covering the stickside post. Amherst's Stuart kept things close making a nifty pad save on an open Joyce's wrist shot from the slot at 3:30 of the 3rd. Amherst then had some bad goal god luck while skating 5x3, with not one, but two goals waved off by the ref in the span of a minute or so. Amherst was dominating play and puck possession only to see Moreau lug the puck coast to coast, down left wing, turn a D while holding her edge and come out along the goal line; Stuart reacted quickly and made a deft poke check to end the scoring bid. Both side played with a lot of passion and left it all out on the ice. The rematch will certainly be worth a trip back to Orr this afternoon!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

How about the rest of the NESCAC??? Three other games go to OT, two of which were tied with extra attacker goals! Anyone out there see the other action?
