NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Saturday at Lansing-Chapman we finally saw NESCAC seeding play true to form as host #3 Williams defeated #8 Connecticut College by a 2-0 score and #4 Bowdoin advanced over #7 Colby 4-2. Neither winner had an easy game to move on to the final.
The opener saw the Ephs forecheck yield an early goal. Wiiliams had 2 forwards attacking in the right corner, causing an errant reverse behind Fralick in the Conn net. Bravi made a play intercepting the puck along the backboards and she fed Kreuger who made a try at the gloveside post; Fralick made the stop but Levine was at the top of the crease and put the puck in to Fralick's gloveside for the 1-0 lead. The 2nd play was back and forth and Fralick made sparkling saves keeping it a 1 goal game. At 14:30 Kreuger came in on a clean break, shorthanded, but came up empty and then at 17:48 Bernstein raced down left wing, held her edge, turned her D, dangled across the crease on her forehand only to have Fralick hang tough and deny her attempt at the gloveside post. Williams added an insurance goal early in the 3rd. Schultz got the puck out to DesMeules at left point and her shot was on goal; Fralick made the stop and the rebound was inches from her gloved grab when Stevenson fought free of the D and put the puck in the open net to Fralick's gloveside. Williams' goalie Billadeau was hot all afternoon and mid period stoned Dumont on a 2x1 shorthanded break in. Down 2-0 Coach Steele boldly pulled her goalie when the Ephs were assessed a penalty at 15:52 of the 3rd. The Camels were pressuring the Eph goal, but then took a penalty of their own and time ran out with Williams holding the 2-0 victory.
Bowdoin prevailed 4-2 over Colby in a game featuring 5 powerplay goals. Nardelli opened the scoring for the Polar Bears with assists to MacNeil and Kennedy. The Mules answered while skating 5x3 late in the 1st with Fisher behind the goal line finding Fortier with a pass at Bowdoin goalie Crofton's stickside for the score. The Mules converted another powerplay when Flynn was open at the top of the crease, beating Crofton with assists to Fortier and Papadellis. Bowdoin evened the score at 2-2 on the 4th powerplay goal of the game. Nardelli worked the right half boards and got the puck to Tang on right point; she had space and an open look at Colby goalie Wheeler; Wheeler's left pad save was kicked to MacNeil low to the right and her shot from the sharp angle was in over Wheeler picking the top far corner. The 3rd finally had the Polar Bears able to shake the Mules. Feroe's forecheck behind the Colby goal line enabled Kennedy to feed MacNeil for the score from in close at the gloveside post to make it 3-2 and yet another powerplay goal made it the 4-2 final. On the play Lane's drive from the point made it on net, Wheeler made the stop but Bourque put in the rebound from the right circle.
And the winner is...
Can Williams beat Bowdoin for the 3rd time this season? Will Coach O'Neil or Coach Gillis (teammates on 3/12/05) have nightmares about the last NCAA quarter final they participated in at Plattsburgh and sub-consciously influence tomorrow's game? Rematch at 2 Sunday, but do not forget the silly spring ahead thing!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

2-0 Ephs end of 1 shots 11-9 Ephs...PB controlled play mid period but Williams scored early on a Crofton whiff and then potted a rebound

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

4-1 Ephs final
...congratulations to Williams players and coaches Gillis and Cobb on the NESCAC title

WOW - Middlebury's decision to sit 2 kids for disciplinary reasons and Conn College's ensuing win results in them not getting a tournament bid.

How does the WIAC get 2 of the 4 home ice spots?? Seems a bit much.....

As for Middlebury, it only validates why Coach Mandigo is the best in the game......for it is only a game, and a lifelong lesson (and you know those two girls will learn from this) will do more good than allowing players who cannot control themselves to play, and instead realize there are actions for their behavior. It is definitely too bad for the other Middlebury girls who were impacted by this, but there is no individual player who gets a pass, no matter how good they are. For the 2 highest scorers on the Middlebury team not to dress in such an important game only emphasizes that point.

Good luck to all of the teams that made it!!

Agreed - still disappointing for the Middlebury girls but definitely a life lesson. I would bet that Coach Mandigo thought the rest of the team would play through the suspensions and beat Conn College and that (in the event that didn't happen) that they would still get a bid. Unfortunately didn't work out that way.

Congratulations to the Williams College Ephs! A special season for them so far and a chance to continue on in Plattsburgh. I am confident they will represent the NESCAC well on Saturday!

Perhaps I'd buy it if they were freshman but I believe they are both juniors...one would think they would 'get it' by now, and wouldn't need such lessons administered... especially so late in the season, eh? Maybe the lesson on the bench a few weeks back didn't work? In any case, good to see Williams advance. Good coach, good program, seem to be doing things the right way. Better luck next year to the old guard.

CrossCheck, no one "gets you" and what your grudge and attitude against one of the finest programs in DIII women's hockey history, with one of the best women's hockey coaches to ever be behind the bench is all about. Stop guessing as to why things happen. These are still young women who make mistakes, as do the college men. No one knows exactly why things happen, and it is for the coach, the girls and the team to work through this; but this, like everything else, is a life learning lesson. If you don't think these two girls feel miserable for how things ended, then you are as dumb as it gets. Give it a rest and move on, and drop whatever grudge is obvious to everyone who reads your posts on this subject. The only positive thing you have said in the last few weeks is your comment on Williams, and I completely agree. Go Ephs, and represent the NESCAC well. The only good thing about the season coming to an end, is that we will not have to continue to read your negative posts until next fall!!

Good luck to Williams, Mid definitely deserved a bid, and Bill did what he thought was right. He is a stand up guy for sure, guaranteed he is not losing sleep over it! It's just Hockey

Go NESCAC

I get the decision to sit players for disciplinary reasons. However, perhaps Coach Mandigo overestimated his team's chances of qualifying for an NCAA bid with a playoff loss. Tough call to make with a tough outcome for the rest of the team.

Coach Mandigo showed a lot of class to discipline players for irresponsible actions and I commend him for sticking to his guns and sitting players for their improper conduct which included knocking Norwich's captain out of commission for the past 3 weeks.

Hopefully she'll be able to play again Saturday against Elmira. They'll need her against a very skilled Soaring Eagles' club that is coming off a heartbreaker at Platty last weekend.
