NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Crazy game. Both teams had multiple chances to win and each team responded when down by a goal. Midd gets 3pts, but has to feel like they got a get out of jail free card. Teams are very close in talent and Jones in net was more important to the Panthers that was Stuart to Amherst. Announcer guy was having a heart attack calling the game with all the dramatics. Questionable call against the Jeffs late in the game did not come back to hurt them, but announcer guy was all over the refs about it to the point of being unfairly rude. Not cool. Expect to see these two again in the playoffs, likely the NESCAC finals at Middlebury.

Wesleyan@Conn College Conn College desperate for wins will take both games at home
Bowdoin@Middlebury Bowdoin needs a fourth line and another set of defenders to compete against a team like Mid. Bowdoin goalies have played well especially of late. Look at the second periods of these games to be the difference! Mid get 3 points, Bowdoin steals a point Friday night

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Bowdoin-Middlebury is certainly a storied match up. Over the 12 seasons of the "modern" NCAA sanctioned era the Panthers hold a 21-9-2 edge over the Polar Bears. Bpwdoin did well the first 3 seasons (01-02 thru 03-04) with a 5-3-2 advantage including 2 NCAA quarter final wins and a split of 2 NESCAC finals. Starting in 04-05 the Panthers have dominated to the tune of an 18-4 mark, although the Polar Bears achieved success during the 12-13 season. Last Polar Bear regular season win at Kenyon was a 4-2 win on 2/19/2010.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

I may have been joking when I said Middlebury might try to sneak Coach Greer on the ice against Bowdoin this weekend (it is the alumnae game weekend), but after the Panthers played a decidedly flat 1st period, it might have been a solution. The other option, of course, was to come out flying for the 2nd period. That is exactly what the Panthers did, striking for 3 goals in a bit less than 2 minutes and coasting to a 4-0 win over the Polar Bears. The 1st opened with the teams feeling each other out on a series of rushes on the big Kenyon ice. Bowdoin was aggressive on the penalty kill forecheck against Midd's first powerplay and never allowed the Panthers to get set up. At about 11 minutes a quick Panther 2x1 rush saw Sullivan set up Van Kula for a redirect just wide of Bowdoin goalie Crofton stickside. Bowdoin then peppered Middlebury goalie Jones on a powerplay that turned into a minute of 5x3 action. Jones made a nice pad save on a Nardelli wrist shot from the left dot and followed with more acrobatic work to keep the Polar Bears at bay. The period ended with the Kenyon scoreboard recording shots 9-3 in Bowdoin's favor, although collegehockeystats.net has revised the figures to 8-1. The 2nd opened with a decided up tick in energy from the Panthers. The first minute saw Wardwell get 2 slapshots on net from left point, with Crofton kicking both into the gloveside corner. A moment later the puck came out of the left corner to Bielawski for a quick wrist shot from the left circle and in the ensuing scrum Crofton played without her stick, but kept things even at nil. The Polar Bears broke back and got the puck to the top of the crease, but could not open the scoring. Jones then made a play that may have been the turning point of the game when she stoned Bourque who came in on a clean break and attempted to go top shelf stickside. The Panthers then scored 3 goals in less than 2 minutes. Watson took a shot from right point that was wide to Crofton's gloveside. Fluke dug the puck off the end boards and moved it behind the net to Bielawski; Bielawski threaded a pass from behind the goal, across to Sullivan for a one timer in from Crofton's gloveside up. Bowdoin picked up an interference call on the faceoff after the goal and the Midd powerplay cashed in :22 later. Krakower fed from right point down low to Fluke, who worked around behind the goal, quickly feeding an open Ugalde stickside of the crease for a put back under Crofton to make to 2-0. The third goal came with Martin springing Krakower out of the neutral zone down left wing; Krakower made a perfect pass across to Sullivan streaking to the crease for the redirect and her second goal of the game. The 3rd period saw an obviously frustrated Polar Bear squad take 5 penalties. The Panthers added a powerplay goal with Bielawski passing from right point across to Wardwell; Wardwell's drive from the blueline was on net and jammed in from the top of the crease by Mandigo for the 4-0 final.
Rematch tomorrow at 3 after Coach Greer and the alumnae get some actual ice time in the morning game.

Well you were certainly psychic on this one, as Midd took it to Bowdoin in e 2nd. Why did you think the 2nd period would be the difference maker?

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Old news by now, but with the slow trip out of Middlebury on snow covered 125 I did not get back to Old Lyme until late in the evening. Hats off to the Polar Bears giving the Panthers all they could handle on Saturday. Were it not for a highlight reel stop by Midd tender Jones on Kennedy in the waning seconds of OT, Bowdoin could have walked out of Kenyon with the win.
Bowdoin was aggressive with their forecheck all series and it paid off midway in the 1st period forcing a Panther D to reverse the puck along the back boards behind her own net. Play in the left wing corner was won by the Polar Bears and with Jones guarding her stickside post, Bourque made a wrap around into the open net. Assists went to Finnerty and Nardelli on the play. Bowdoin's Crofton was strong in net with a great series of saves on two Midd powerplays. The 2nd opened with Bowdoin on a carry over powerplay of their own and Jones made a nice glove save when Bowen's wrister from the left circle was deflected at the top of the crease by Finnerty. Midd had a good chance at 6:09 of the period with McConney into the zone to the top of the right wing circle for a drive that was blocked by Crofton only to get past her and land on top of the cage. Jones made another big stop when at 10:31 Andrews made a play on a clearing pass at the blueline and walked in only to see Jones snuff her off at the stickside post. Crofton answered with a big stop of het own at 12:34 when Sullivan threaded a pass from the left half boards to Schulman, alone with time at the top of the crease; Crofton held her line and stuffed the forehand. The 3rd opened with Midd skating on a carry over powerplay and they broke through at :31. Watson on left point advanced the puck to Ugalde at the left dot; Ugalde fed across to Krakower who had drifted in from right point to the right dot; Krakower's forehand on the ice through traffic eluded Crofton to tie at 1-1. Bowdoin had some good pressure on a powerplay later in the period, but were unable to take a lead. The 4x4 OT period saw both teams take a penalty setting up the dramatic finish. The Midd penalty resulted in :46 of 3x3 and lots of wide open ice. Bowdoin was in zone and Kennedy had the puck on her forehand at the low edge of the right circle. Jones left her line and made a head first dive and save off her head gear; Kennedy followed the rebound into the corner, but her pass back to the crease escaped MacNeil, lurking on the doorstep, and the buzzer sounded with the 1-1 tie in the books.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Few comments:

- Williams - Getting the job done against the teams in the lower half of the league. Now they play Bowdoin, Amherst, and Middlebury over the next 3 weekends. Be interesting how they fare against the upper half of the league. But definitely an improvement so far from the past few years and taking advantage of a pretty strong freshman class.

- Wesleyan - Similarly on the upswing (although not at the same level as Williams yet, but it was a steeper climb). Points every weekend is a good goal for them and they are getting it done.

- Colby - Fairly good offensive team with good goaltending but struggling to clear their own zone against good teams. Playing a really different style than when Venditti coached them, but one more suited to their players IMHO.

- Conn College - Wow, how undisciplined and dirty is this team? They are averaging almost 15 minutes a game in the conference in penalties (largely on the backs of Dineen, Farrell, Pagano and Hunter - not unexpected from the last 2 having seen them play in high school/club hockey), 5 more than anyone else in the NESCAC. And the penalties are nearly all of the roughing, cross-checking, hitting-from-behind, body-checking, elbowing, etc variety with at least 2 ejections. It's just stupid, embarrassing hockey, especially considering that they have a pretty talented team - can't imagine why the coaches take this approach, but wow is it flawed judging from their 2-5-3 record in the league and they haven't played Middlebury, Amherst, or Williams (top 3 for now) yet. Totally wasting their talent. I'm sure the Conn apologists (if there are any - Cross Check?) will argue it is the refereeing, but everybody is playing in front of the same refs and not having nearly the penalty calls against them, so that excuse is garbage.

You make a half decent point then go off on a fool's rant. Undisciplined? Yes. Dirty? no. You sound like a whiney Cardinal parent [there were plenty of those at Dayton this weekend...talk about 'undisciplined'...I haven't seen such poor behavior at a nescac game in years....yelling, banging the glass, swearing, etc.].

Penalties are a huge issue for the Camels...and IMO are the #1 reason they are where they are in the standings. However, most of the penalties are not 'dirty'....More often than not, they are called for interference, tripping, or checking [which is often not 'dirty' simply over-aggessive play]. In any case, taking stupid penalties must have consequences if the problem is to be corrected...if they don't fix the problem soon, they will be in big trouble vs the top teams they play in the next 30 days. You can't play nearly an entire period short-handed and expect to win.

- I looked at the 10 NESCAC games and about half their penalties fall into the category I called dirty. For some reason, it seems to be worse in the last 2 series then in the first 3 and I looked at the more recent games as the basis for my comments.
- I saw Wesleyan at a game earlier this season where I thought several of the penalties called against them were questionable and a couple should have been called in their favor that weren't. The Wesleyan fans (and there were quite a few) were quite well-behaved. I would guess it was the nature of the penalties that Conn took this weekend that got them worked up - 9 roughing/checking/hitting from behind calls, including a game misconduct.
- Agree they can't expect to win against Mid and Amherst, and probably even Williams, with these kind of penalty numbers. Really need to get themselves under control. Generally all starts with the coaches reaction to the behavior - what has that been?

I have a niece on the Bowdoin Team so I have been keeping an eye on them for the last 3 years!
