NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Hey CrossCheck have you been to any of the Bowdoin Games? The goaltending has been solid. The first four games Bowdoin skated 12 players. The last two games they finally have a servicable roster. Both Goalies are settling in nicely getting some great experience! Will learn more aout the Polar Bears on Saturday!

Well, as they say, "the proof will be in the Puddin'...."...Last I checked, the Cadets ain't exactly UMB or NEC.

I still can't get used to 'the Sid'....to me it will always be the friendly [or not so] confines of Dayton Arena.

BTW - generally D3 college level shot counts are off or inaccurate because the scorekeeper has a home team bias - this was a neutral site for this game and it seems unlikely that the scorekeeper would have had any significant leaning towards Amherst or Elmira in recording shots.

Every program at both levels uses shot charts so the counts in the box scores are accurate. The inaccuracies at games come from the guys in the fishbowl running the clock that tend to have a distorted view.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Just like deja-vu all over again. I always love the ride over the Notch between South Hadley (Mt. Holyoke) and Amherst, brings back memories (such as they are) of back in the day (late 60s) but anyway...we are talking about the hockey here, and the Lord Jeffs looked good skating at Orr with Stuart (and her D) pitching a shutout at Manhattanville last evening. Looking at the box score I was surprised Amherst had only 22 shots, as they buzzed the Valiant net most of the game. Amherst got on the board mid way in the 1st when Ryan received the puck on right point and made a tricky show and go to step inside the Valiant forward and walk into the high slot. Ryan's shot was true, Manhattanville goalie Shaughnessy made the stop, but first Harris and then Tank put back rebounds with Tank slipping the puck in for the 1-0 edge. Shaughnessy kept things close at the 12: mark when she kicked out a drive by Opperman, who moved in from right point, down the half boards and rifled one from the right circle. Amherst goalie Stuart kept her shutout when tested at the 10: of the 2nd, covering a shot from left point by Beauvais that made it on net through traffic. Amherst kept pressure on after a successful Valiant penalty kill and scored when 1st year D Smith got a shot on goal from the slot, Flom followed up and Tank finished for her second tally of the night. Stuart was again tested minutes later when Manhattanville got in on a 3x2 rush, but she stopped Stauffer with a shortside glove save. Amherst answered with a 2x1 of their own when E. Martin fed Salmon breaking into the Valiant zone on right wing; Salmon took her time and ripped one from the right circle beating Shaughnessy up off the crossbar ofr the third goal.
Amherst has been impressive in going 1-1-1 against USCHO top 10 competition these last three games. Stuart has played great goal, the D corps is young and solid and they are getting nice net presence attacking. Another tough test coming this weekend when the Lord Jeffs visit Kreitzberg on Sunday; I may just be in Northfield...

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Today's schedule afforded the opportunity to take in games at Middlebury and Northfield. The only problem was travelling between the two in the time between games. I had planned to go the back way through the roads less travelled, but upon making my way up to the approaches to the Lincoln Gap I was forced to retrace my route due to snow up in those steep hills (I would go into detail on this but for fear the Editor might object to this sort of misadventure...). Anyway, quickly rerouting through Moretown and Moretown Mountain Road saw me arrive at Kreitzberg only 8 or so minutes after faceoff. Unfortunately, my arrival coincided with the start of the Charron (2 goals, 2 assists)-Gallagher (1 goal, 2 assists) show, as Norwich goalie Fairchild shutout the Polar Bears with a 17 save effort. Not too much else to say about a 5-0 Bowdoin loss.
The Polar Bears start the New Year home with Manhattanville, the MIAC's St. Thomas and St. Anselm before they begin their remaining 14 games of NESCAC play 1/10 at Conn College.
The game at Kenyon was far more enjoyable from the NESCAC perspective, although Castleton did hang tough through two periods. The Panthers came alive in the 3rd, scoring four times, and were backstopped by Marsh's 16 saves for her second shutout of the season. Midd jumped out to the early lead when Laven launched a drive from the blueline; Joyce put the rebound back on goal and Schulman rammed it home from the edge of the right circle. Castleton goalie Stephens kept things close through the 2nd and made a spectacular save on Sullivan, robbing her attempt from the top of the crease sprawling and smothering the puck while on her back. The 3rd saw the Panthers break things open with three goals in less than four minutes. The flurry started with Brownschilde making a nice play at the blueline, keeping the puck in the zone; she fed Bielawski in the slot and her low shot made it 2-0. Sullivan made a nice play working alone deep in the left corner with Midd changing; she fed back as Bielawski came in zone off the bench; Bielawski's drive from the high slot rebounded to Fluke and her put back from the top of the crease found the twine. The Panthers scored quickly on a powerplay (:06) with Bielawski winning the draw back to Wardwell at right point; Wardwell's low shot was deftly redirected by Mandigo for the score. Midd closed out the scoring with Krakower in deep, grabbing a rebound and from the right of the net picking the opposite top corner from what seemed an impossible angle; assists to Fluke and Ugalde on the play.
Tomorrow will see Amherst take a crack at the Cadets in Kreitzberg at 4pm, and that will close out NESCAC play prior to the Christmas break.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Back at Kreitzberg...Amherst bus just arrived... hopefully the Lord Jeff's get a better outcome than the last time they came through!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

I know I under estimated Amherst coming into this season. The Lord Jeff's play against some of the east's best has shown they are back in the mix. Sunday they visited Norwich (the game after the Cadets easily defeated NESCAC fellow Bowdoin) and the pesky Lord Jeffs stayed tough to the end and almost played the Cadets to a draw. I know, almost only counts in other random endeavors, but Amherst came back from one goal deficits three times only to play like the young team they are and give up a goal :20 after tying at 3 all. I had said to an Amherst parent before the game that they would be in good shape if they kept sniper Charron off the score sheet (following her 2 goal, 2 assist effort against Bowdoin Saturday afternoon) and darn if she did not get an assist on the game winner.
The 1st saw Norwich come out flying, but Amherst got their legs under them and had some good pressure on Cadet goalie Fairchild late in the period.
Norwich opened the scoring early in the 2nd when Parsons caught Amherst in a terrible line change by feeding through the neutral zone, ahead on right wing (on the opposite side of the rink from the Lord Jeff bench) to Bellio. Bellio was in alone and her open slap shot from the right circle made it through Amherst goalie Stuart for the 1-0 lead. The next few minutes Norwich was swarming the Amherst net and Stuart made a strong effort keeping the game close. Amherst cashed in a power play goal to tie when E. Martin launched a drive from the mid blue line; Fairchild made the stop, but Culhane pounced on the rebound and chipped it up and in from the gloveside top of the crease. Charron then contributed by staying strong on her skates, breaking in and going to her backhand, drawing a penalty. Seconds later goalie Stuart was called for a trip (which may have been a make up for an earlier non call on her) and Norwich had a 5x3 opportunity. Anderson made a play into Sharman in the left circle; her drive was kicked out to the stickside of Stuart, but Bellio was there for the put back and the 2-1 lead. Norwich penalties at the end of the 2nd and start of the 3rd resulted in a Lord Jeff 5x3 chance and Amherst Coach Matthews took a wise timeout to set things up. Off the face off, Salmon won a puck on the right wing half boards, walked across the slot and wristed a forehand on Fairchild in net, E. Martin stuffed in the puck, the ref, in position behind the net immediately pointed goal and after a bit of a controversy the play stood; tie 2-2. Norwich took the lead back with strong play behind the Amherst goal by Anderson and Bellio to get the puck into a scrum at the top of the crease from where Gibson rammed it home low to Stuart's stickside. Time was winding down when Herzog fed ahead in the neutral zone to Salmon on left wing; Salmon had space and launched a long laser that beat Fairchild stickside. :20 later Norwich scored the game winner with McComber scoring from a scrum at the top of the crease; assists to Murphy and Charron. Most entertaining, if vaguely disappointing from the NESCAC point of view.
Hope all you coaches, players, and parents have a Merry Christmas and rest up for a Happy New Year and the crunch time drive into March!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

A non-conference week for the NESCAC before getting down to the seven week grind to the end of the regular season. Middlebury still looks to be the front runner, but Amherst has been a surprise and who knows how the rest of the season will sort out. I was thinking of a trip to Brunswick, but the forecast for Sunday night has changed my plans (or did the Editor change my plans?). Anyway, hope you all are getting out to take in what look to be some intriguing contests this next week.
The Polar Bears play three big games in the friendly confines of Watson. They should see some sort of litmus test against Manhattanville (with Amherst having shut the Valiants out 3-0 before the break). St. Thomas comes in at 5-3-1, but it is always impossible to psych out these East-West matchups and then St. Anselm visits next Tuesday. I have to believe Bowdoin will be happy to go 2-1 in these 3 games.
Conn College is on the ice in the Codfish Bowl and I have to take the Camels over Neumann and host UMB (who got past Stevenson 4-3 earlier this afternoon).
Trinity hosts Southern Maine Friday and Saturday and that should mean the Bantams win twice.
Wesleyan is hosting St. Catherine and the two appear to be evenly matched, but I like the Cardinals at home.
Holy Cross visits Amherst on Saturday and I think the Lord Jeffs prevail.
Big rematch up in Middlebury with Elmira coming in. Back in November, the Panthers trailed 2-1 and 3-2 before exploding for 3 goals in 4 minutes and a 5-3. I think 8 goals is a lot, but the Panthers take a close one.
Colby is back in action hosting New England College Friday and you have to go with the White Mules at home.
Hope you all had a great holiday and see you at a game sometime soon!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Polar Bears up 3-0 after 2. Doing a good job at both ends; keeping M-ville from getting anything going in close to 1st year goalie Crofton and showing nice net presence in front of M-ville goalie Shaugnessy, getting the puck to the net and digging it in.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

The Soaring Eagles and Panthers have now met 17 times and tonight's 3-2 OT win by Middlebury has to be one of the classics. Both teams played particularly well considering coming off the holiday lay off. Middlebury played a couple of tentative minutes to start, but tested Elmira 1st year tender Nelson a little over 7 minutes in when Sullivan and Bielawski worked a nifty give and go out of the left corner and Nelson made a nice stop on Bielawski's stickside try from in close. Middlebury had another good chance just over 11 minutes when Nelson thwarted a drive by Moreau from the left point. Elmira broke through with some excellent work by the Ryan, Weston, Lamoureux line (my notes differ from the box score, but I had Weston digging in the left corner, getting the puck to Ryan who moved behind the Midd goal before passing to Lamoureux, open for a low blast from the slot which found the twine). The Soaring Eagles were buzzing around the first 4 minutes of the 2nd only to take a penalty for hitting after the whistle and see the momentum shift on the Panther powerplay. Nelson made a save on a drive from left point, the puck went into the right corner and was moved out to Wardwell on right point. Wardwell fed to Bielawski on left point and her drive from the high slot was deflected by Sullivan from the top of the crease and in to tie at 1-1. Middlebury goalie Jones kept things even robbing, I think Lamoureux, with a big kick save on an open look from the slot off a left dot faceoff a bit over 10 minutes in. Saltstone then made a nice play to give Elmira the lead. The Soaring Eagle's Delainey broke up a 3x2 Panther rush just inside the blueline and got the puck to Hogan. She fed Saltstone up into left wing center ice and she broke in, drew the D and then shifted gears and sped into the slot; her backhand beat Jones top shelf stickside. The 3rd opened with Elmira's Ryan ringing one off the stickside post after a cute toe drag about 2 minutes into the period. At 8 minutes Jones made a huge pad stop on Weston's blast from the edge of the crease to keep it a one goal game. Minutes later the Panthers got even on a great effort by Schulman. Joyce passed out of the Midd D zone to Schulman in center and she was off on a semi break away, rifling a wrist shot from the edge of the right circle, with a D draped on her back, beating Nelson high. A minute or so later Ryan again worked free into the slot and wristed one off the crossbar. The OT saw Jones make an acrobatic series of two or three stops from in close at 1:20 setting the stage for Mandigo's heroics seconds later. Watson picked up the loose puck and got it to Laven; Laven fed Mandigo and she took the puck left of center into the Elmira zone, in alone Mandigo launched a rocket forehand from the left circle beating Nelson up in off the crossbar.
Elmira next continues a non-conference phase of their schedule hosting Norwich Friday. Middlebury hosts the ECAC-East's Salve Regina Wednesday and then resumes NESCAC play at Wesleyan Friday and Saturday.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Not much to say about the Polar Bear 3-1 loss to St. Thomas except to congratulate the Tommies!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

The NESCAC did pretty well during the week of non-conference play! Through Tuesday they went 10-4 (2 losses to the ECAC-East and 2 to the MIAC). Tonight Salve Regina makes a trip up to Kenyon to take on the Panthers. There will be four NESCAC series this weekend with Middlebury@Wesleyan, Colby@Amherst, Bowdoin@Connecticut College and Williams@Trinity (Hamilton has the NESCAC bye week and plays ECAC-West teams Cortland and Elmira).
It is so early in the league season that you cannot really read to much into things as they currently stand:

It will be a few weeks before we can really get down to hard core uninformed speculation!

No way - I'm starting my uninformed speculation right now....

Middlebury@Wesleyan - Mid sweeps
Colby@Amherst - Amherst sweeps
Bowdoin@Connecticut College - Split (but the CC loss to UMB made me think about a Bowdoin sweep)
Williams@Trinity - Split (have to pick at least one upset, right?)
Hamilton - Beats Cortland, loses to Elmira

My reference to uninformed speculation was intended to mean the standings and I apologize for such loosely constructed wording. This weekend I think:
Middlebury sweeps Wesleyan
Amherst keeps pace and sweeps Colby (setting up the following weekend to have some meaning, uninformed speculation-wise)
Bowdoin and Conn College split-at this point (having seen the Polar Bears play Norwich and watched the 3 weekend games on the web) Bowdoin just looks to be an average team (reference their last second UMB triumph and dropping 2/3 lately); the Camels are their usual, loveable, utterly unpredictable selves, but have way better goal play (.955 saves % to the Polar Bear collective .902)
Trinity sweeps Williams-I keep rooting for the Ephs (and Coach Gillis), but the Bantam advantage in goal is hard to overlook
Hamilton splits

Uninformed but Unafraid to guess...

Midd sweeps Wesly. [what can you say, it's nescac top vs bottom].
Colby and Amherst... A win for Amherst and a tie. [don't think the Jeffs will roll the Mules]
Bowdoin and Conn split [P.S. UMB is a decent team and on a roll...plus goalie was a stoner vs. Conn...score should have been reversed].
Williams and Trinity...a win for Trinity and a tie. [should be close, a lot will depend on Willy's goaltending].
Hamilton: beats Cortland, loses to Elmira.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

So much for our learned speculation on things NESCAC!
Made the quick trip up a couple of exits on I-95 to watch the Polar Bears take on the Camels. Bowdoin cashed in 2 powerplay chances and fended off most of a Camel 5x3, then got a late goal for their first NESCAC win of the season.
Conn took an early lead when Brier fed Pagano in the slot for a point blank one time rocket under Bowdoin goalie Crofton. The Polar Bears evened things with a powerplay goal a few minutes later when Andrews grabbed an errant Camels clearing pass in the slot, had space and got a hard shot on Conn goalie Fralick; the rebound was to the gloveside circle and Kennedy's low shot was in the net back stickside.
The Polar Bears took the lead on another powerplay early in the 2nd. Ganoung made a play on left point keeping the puck in the zone and passing across to Tang; her shot from inside the blueline was high and made it through traffic beating Fralick up. My notes are that Bowdoin killed most of the Camel 5x3 powerplay later in the 2nd, doing a nice job clogging shooting lanes and keeping the puck away from Crofton and the net, but the Camels finally got the puck inside when Igo found Kallen in the slot for a backhand; Crofton made the initial stop, but Kallen put back from her gloveside found the net to tie at 2-2. This is all at odds with the minor officials version as reported by collegehockeystats.net
The 3rd saw both goalies making plays to keep things even. Fralick made a nice right pad stop on a MacNeil drive from the high slot about 5 minutes in. Then Fralick stopped Feroe on a Polar Bear 2x1 rush at 6:30 of the period. Bowdoin's Crofton made a nifty grab with her catcher on Dumont's backhand from the edge of the left circle at the 9 minute mark. The game winner came with Bourque working the puck up the right side, out to Lane at the point for a long shot, through traffic and on net. Fralick made the stop, but was down and Nardelli put the puck in from the top of the crease.
