NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Here goes nothing [literally]...

Amherst sweeps the Cards [no first game surprise this time]
Conn sweeps the Conts [goaltending the difference]
Bowdoin sweeps the Mules [a bear beats a mule every time, right?]
Middy and Bantams tie both games [should be close, why not 2 ties?]
Williams beats Utica and gets spanked by Elmira [seems like the consensus, so why fight it]

Ok, so much for the predictions...nobody here can get even half these games correct.

Can anyone explain how Trinity/Middlebury is an OT affair in game one, but then a 7-0 blowout the next day?
Bowdoin may need to double-up on the Koolaid rations after getting double-spanked by the lowly Albino Mules.
Camel Frosh may be finding their sea-legs, and the offense starting to click...still waaay to many penalties though.
Cardinals fighting the good fight...may be competitive all year.

It may have taken the Panthers a game on Kenyon ice to hit their stride. Their passing was much crisper in the Saturday game and the upper-class, experienced snipers have gotten back in sync. Add to that the fact Coach Potter chose to start Pujol (last season's First Team All-NESCAC tender) for her first start of the season and you know what happens when the sharks smell blood in the water. It is hard to remember the last time a Bantam team gave up so many goals in a game (I did not check, but it must go back to the '06-'07 season prior to Iwachiw's tenure in net).
But are the Panthers good enough? It was the last thing I heard said in Kenyon Saturday, and I assume made reference to the arrival of a Plattsburgh team that has yet to yield a goal this season. The question haunted me the whole white knuckle ride home on the ice and snow up 125, past spun-out cars (in Ripton and up past the Snow Bowl) and an over-turned SUV (saw one flip just north of Northampton on I-91). Is the buzz all hype? As a NESCAC fan I want to believe smart girls can play hockey (and they do have 5 NCAA era championships), but the Cardinals did look impressive dismantling Norwich earlier this month. Are the Panthers good enough? Just have to head back to Middlebury and see, eh?

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

I caught most of the first two periods of the Midd -- Trinity game on Friday night. I was not impressed by what I saw out of the Panthers and felt that they were probably good enough to finish near the top of the NESCAC this year, but would get smoked by the likes of Plattsburgh and Elmira. So after the Saturday result (which I did not see because I was watching the Midd soccer women stun Johns Hopkins by knocking in the game winner with 17 seconds left in the game and move on to the NCAA final four, and also, a I should give a shout out to the Polar Bear women for winning the NCAA field hockey title on Saturday, awesome job), I don't know what to think. Plattsburgh has had a lot more time on the ice and by all logic should be the better team. I'm hoping (based on the Saturday results) that the Panthers will be reasonably competitive against P'burgh, but not ready for prime time at this point. Time will tell how they develop, and what they can do against the likes of the Cardinals (who will also improve) later in the year.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Some non-conference action tonight:
Wesleyan has been playing pretty well and should beat Sacred Heart at home
Southern Maine is off to a good start; Wheeler has been solid enough to tough one out for the Mules, but I see a draw
Salve Regina has beaten the bad teams and lost to the good ones; I saw Trinity in both roles this weekend, but I'll go with the Bantams
Polar Bears need reinforcements, having skated only 13 players last, lost weekend, but will the cavalry arrive in time; UMB is 1-5-1...Bowdoin in a squeaker
Have to note that this is the 10th anniversary of meeting the Editor at Rye Playland while watching Manhattanville feast on Williams 7-4; IIRC I noted the Eph goalie had sieve-like tendencies...Happy Anniversary Gail!!!

Everyone (including Wesleyan) over Sacred Heart this season....:)
Colby rides high after last weekend and crushes USM
Trinity over Salve Regina - goaltending is the difference
Bowdoin over UMB - come on, the yHAVE to beat UMB don't they?

Probably agree with that assessment. Careful about the Salve goalie comments. Would not expect team to win, but the Frosh goalie from Taft is better than you think. [National camp kid...IMO she will be better than both Trinity goalies when she's a Sr.].

Other than Kennedy, who is coming to the aid of the once mighty Polar Bears? Hope they bring spiked Koolaid [always appreciated by Prof. Howell] :p

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Apologies to Hamilton and Coach McNamara for missing their game with Oswego, and congratulations on your 2-1 win (which I would, of course, have predicted)!

Actually was commenting on the strength of the Trinity goaltending. not the weakness of the Salve goaltender(s)....

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Panther-Cardinal Classic time. Everyone has gotten past the holiday family thing and it is time to get down to serious business. Lots of questions going into this. Will anyone ever score on the Cardinals? Do the Soaring Eagles and Panthers enjoy revisiting their last meeting? And on and on.
Elmira is riding a 5 game winning streak after what must have been a disappointing showing at the East-West earlier this month. Middlebury has had trouble in their first game of both weekends thus far this season and despite a 4-0 start need to play better the first game of a series. Midd is skating 7 1st years and particularly on the back liners, this will be their initiation in the top flight, intense world the Panthers routinely inhabit. I am sure the Lord Jeffs are pleased with a 3-0-1 start to their NESCAC season; this will give them a reality check on their development early in the season. Plattsburgh looks to be a team on a mission, as if to prove the end of last season was some sort of mistake and they really can blast their way through unbeaten (and currently even unscored upon).
Off to Kenyon; hope we can find our way into the building!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Thrilling afternoon of action at Kenyon! First Middlebury bested Elmira 5-3 in a rematch of last March's title game and then Amherst stood toe to toe with Plattsburgh for a 1-1 draw.
Stuart, the Lord Jeff goalie, was outstanding in making 32 saves on the day, repeatedly thwarting the high scoring Cardinals. Amherst also became the first team to score on Plattsburgh this season, ending (what must be the DIII record) 518:14 minutes of scoreless hockey (and Cardinal goalie Aveson's mind boggling 398:14 minutes of shut out play). It was by no means a cheap goal, as diligent forechecking behind the Cardinal net by Flom caused a turnover; she spotted Harris, unchecked in the slot, Harris had a good look and buried the puck low to Aveson's gloveside. Play continued with Stuart standing on her head protecting the 1 goal lead. Following a late Amherst powerplay, Plattsburgh got the goalie off for an extra attacker and Caldwell banged one home from just outside Stuart's gloveside post for the 1-1 tie with :09 remaining.
The Middlebury victory in the first game was no less dramatic, as the Panthers trailed the Soaring Eagles 3-2 with just over 4 minutes to play. The 4 official system may have proven crucial, as a linesman opposite the Elmira bench whistled play to a halt and upon conferring with the refs the Soaring Eagles were assessed a bench minor for too many players. On the ensuing powerplay Midd 1st year D Watson got the puck at left point, had patience and worked to her right, before blasting a shot home tying the score at 3 (assists to Fluke and Ugalde with the work behind the goal line). Panther goalie Jones' play moments before the Watson score may have been the turning point in the game, as she stoned Elmira's Nystrom on a break away, denying the attempt to beat her from in close at the gloveside post. The teams had traded powerplay goals in the 1st; Midd taking the lead on a Bielawski drive from left point and Elmira countering when Wilgosh fed from right point to Ryan on the right half boards; Ryan's shot was along the ice and deftly redirected by Hogan inside the stickside post.
The lone goal of the 2nd put the Soaring Eagles up 2-1 as the teams were skating 4 a side; Wilgosh and Ryan again assisting, getting the puck to Lamoureux who broke through center with a Midd D back; her long slap from the high slot handcuffed Jones gloveside and the puck trickled in.
The 3rd saw Midd tie at 2 with Laven deep in the right corner making a perfect feed to Sullivan at the top of the crease for a one timer in low on Elmira goalie Marshall's stickside. Elmira countered with Lamoureux foiling Midd breaking out on the left half boards, taking the puck deep into the left wing corner and feeding Hogan on the doorstep; Hogan beat Jones inside the gloveside post for the 3-2 lead. The game winner came on a wild pinball caroming shot by Ugalde from the left wing dot after Marshall made a save of a Wardwell drive. Bielawski notched her second goal of the game into an empty net with a wrister from just inside the red line center ice for the 5-3 final.
