NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

I'm game for prognostication......

Middlebury sweeps
Trinity sweeps
Amherst & Hamilton each get a win at their home rinks
Williams sweeps

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Wesleyan 4-3 over Williams - I'm already down a game in the predictions but I think everyone else is as well..... looks from the shots like Williams outplayed them but didn't score and gave up a lot of goals considering the number of shots.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Well, so much for the predictions. Good to get back to watching exciting NESCAC hockey action. Middlebury visited Colby's Alfond Arena and came away with a hard fought 2-1 win. Although outshot 42-22 the Mules hung tough, led by Wheeler's outstanding play in goal. The problem for Colby was Jones' equally stellar play in net for the Panthers. The game opened with a Panther powerplay, as Colby was assessed a protocol violation for being late coming on ice. Midd cashed in the opportunity when Watson fed Ugalde set up in the left circle. Ugalde had space and her shot, heading for the far post, was deflected by Van Kula in the slot, beating the moving Wheeler low stickside. What proved the game winner came midway in the 2nd when Krakower got the puck down the right boards to Mandigo; she fought through a D and ripped a shot from the low edge of the right circle. Wheeler made the stop but Mandigo followed her shot and slipped the puck in from the top of the crease. Colby answered a minute later with Dewhirst assisting Rascia (apologies for lack of detail, but I really missed it). The 3rd featured end to end action, something like 6 minutes mid period without a whistle. The aggressive Colby forecheck put some pressure on late, but Jones held the lead for the Panthers and the 2-1 win. My unofficial 3 stars would go to Wheeler, Mandigo and Jones. Rematch tomorrow at 3!

Wow! How late were they that they were assessed a penalty? Any explanation for why they were late? That type of penalty is usually on the coach....

I think it was just first game of the season confusion. Obviously the rules define a very specific count down to the start of play and assess a bench minor for violation There was a gentleman from the National Ice Hockey Officials Association in attendance, by the by.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Good news and bad news for the Polar Bears. The good news is the 1-0 win over Montclair State (on a Kennedy goal) vaults them into the NCAA field hockey semi-finals next weekend. Bad news is they will be a bit short on the bench for the home and home Colby series (I count 5 D and 9 forwards available). Colby did not have a lot of size but put up a good fight in their season opening losses to Middlebury (and Wheeler was very sharp in net).

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

One week in the books and probably as many questions as answers from the first weekend of regular season NESCAC play. As always, insight from anyone on the scene would be helpful.
Is Amherst better than I thought or is Hamilton in for a really long season?
Time to throw confetti for the Middlebury 1st years (lots of ice time and contributions in Waterville)?
Will Colby build on a feisty series hosting the Panthers?
Camel Cool-Aide (again)?
Can the Bantams succeed with such a lean burn offense?
Are the Cardinals ready for more than a battle for 8th or do they just have the Ephs number?
Is Williams really a run and gun team or will the defense settle down?
Where will the Polar Bears be when they start their NESCAC home stretch in January?

Hold the confetti for Midd...it's one weekend.
No need for PBear excuses in November...save those for later.
Williams may need to run&gun to win, not sure about the back-end.
Trinity has some offensive punch and more than one goalie, Conn can keep pucks out...but can't seem to put 'em in.
Still a wait & see on Amherst...should know more after this weekend. Same for Hamilton.

Amherst a little better than Hamilton seems about right. Won't really know about them until Panther/Cardinal classic.
Middlebury is good, regardless of freshmen
Colby should be better - know more after this weekend's grudge match - can't take 4 checking penalties in first period very often and win
Connecticut - may take time for freshman to gel - looks like it didn't happen this weekend
Trinity got the job done - status check after next weekend
Wesleyan can win a couple Friday games, but won't be competitive Saturday with such a short bench - Williams win seems like a combination of first game and goaltending
Williams - not sure that 5 goals in 2 games gives concern for defense (although it is Wesleyan) - missing at least one good D over weekend (injury?).

Wasn't at any games this weekend, but watched the two Conn/Trinity games on video. Trinity appears much more aggressive in the offensive zone than last year, got 45 shots on Friday, and should have won, but Conn tender came up big in some critical occasions. If they keep getting that many shots they'll get more goals. Conn plays hard and physical, but a lot of the play seemed to be in their end. They took a lot of penalties, which seems to be their "style". Trinity lost Shannon Farrell for several weeks to a broken wrist on a cheap shot from behind; should have been a major because of the severity and injury, but was called a minor. About what you expect from the NIHOA officials we see in NESCAC games.

Agree on the officiating...was pretty inconsistent in both games....

Didn't see this supposed "cheap shot" and tend to doubt it happened like you said [if it's the play I'm thinking of, the D was just keeping her goalie from getting run after the whistle]. By the by, both teams took a ton of penalties [actually I think Trinity had more in total than CC]...Either their PP is terrible or CC's man-down is great..one or the other. In any case, I thought both goalies played great, especially in game #1 [though whoever kept the stats vastly over-counted the SOG for both teams so I wouldn't go by those #'s].

Bantams had more speed and better passing esp in game #2...However, disagree about more of the play being in CC end of the rink [and shots bear that out]. The difference was when CC was on offence, they don't do much with or without the puck. Too much standing around and taking shots from bad angles into traffic while the points were wide open. Had they started firing from the points, #15 and #18 would have put a few in [or scored on rebounds].

I wasn't there, and the video was hard to see, but my understanding (I may be wrong, I'm getting most of this second hand) was that she was along the side wall and was crashed from behind pretty blatantly. [EDIT: Confirmed by player in the game - Shannon was on the half wall facing the goal line, waiting for the breakout pass when she was railed from behind with an elbow to the head, crashed to the ice and fractured her wrist.]

I never go by the shot stats, most times they're not even close; I don't think there's any training for the scorers, so anything the keeper touches, or goes near the net is counted. I don't find the reffing at NESCAC womens' games inconsistent at all. I find it consistently horrifyingly bad. I say this as a former USA Hockey Level 3 ref. There's no excuse for assigning some of the refs we see in these games - they should be doing mites and squirts, not college games.

I was there, wasn't a cheap shot, good aggressive pinch by defenseman, tie getting to puck. IMHO refs don'tusually have time to check injury report before making call and it really didn't look that bad.

I never saw anything that looked remotely like a 'cheap-shot'...Injuries happen all the time, and usually not because of anything dirty.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Week 2 Picks:

Bowdoin splits with Colby (Bowdoin an unknown)
Conn College splits with Hamilton (Hamilton takes advantage of home ice and a low scoring Conn team in one game)
Middlebury sweeps Trinity (if it was at Trinity I might call a split)
Amherst splits with Wesleyan (Wesleyan catches them still on the bus on Friday)
Williams downs Utica, trounced by Elmira

Selections for week 2:

a) Bowdoin and Colby split.
b) Hamilton and Conn Coll split.
c) Middlebury takes 2 from Trinity.
d) Amherst takes 2 from Wesleyan.
e) Utica beats Williams and they also lose to Elmira.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Since no one has sent me any funds to influence my predictions (like if you want your team to win, I should pick you to lose) here goes:
Middlebury sweeps Trinity on the Kenyon big ice
Amherst sweeps Wesleyan
Conn College (Camel Cool-Aide version) sweeps Hamilton
Bowdoin gets ambushed by Colby and they split
Williams beats Utica and plays Elmira surprisingly close

If I may jump in:
Amherst sweeps Wesleyan
Conn Coll and Hamilton split
Bowdoin takes both from Colby
Williams gets edged by Utica, beat up by Elmira
Trinity ties one game and loses the other with Middlebury

Here goes nothing [literally]...

Amherst sweeps the Cards [no first game surprise this time]
Conn sweeps the Conts [goaltending the difference]
Bowdoin sweeps the Mules [a bear beats a mule every time, right?]
Middy and Bantams tie both games [should be close, why not 2 ties?]
Williams beats Utica and gets spanked by Elmira [seems like the consensus, so why fight it]

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Middlebury stays unbeaten with a hard fought 3-2 OT win over a tough Trinity squad this evening at Kenyon Arena. The Panthers had taken a 2-0 lead midway in the 2nd only to see the Bantams net 2 in lightning fashion. Middlebury took a 1st period lead with Fluke and Sullivan working down low behind the Bantam goal. Martin came on ice and took a feed from Sullivan out of the left wing corner; Martin had open space and rifled the puck in high on Trinity goalie Maxwell's gloveside. The Panthers extended their lead in the 2nd on a powerplay goal. Moreau's drive from right point was handled by Maxwell but Sullivan pounced on the rebound at the left of the crease for a put back and the 2-0 lead. 12 seconds later the Bantams answered with Tani feeding out up the right wing half boards to Ricco; her low drive from inside the blueline, through traffic, eluded Jones to make it a 2-1 game. A minute later Colbert forced a turnover on a Panther breakout and got the puck to Herr, open in the left circle; her blast beat Jones up gloveside rattling off the post and in to tie at 2.
The 3rd saw back and forth action and Midd nearly got the gamewinner as regulation time ran out when Krakower rang one off the crossbar with seconds left on the clock. OT saw Fluke receive the puck from Schaeder working deep in the left wing corner; Fluke walked off the half boards into the high slot and ripped a shot over Maxwell for the 3-2 Panther win.
