NESCAC '13-'14 season

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

It's time:

- Williams - Bowdoin - Both teams playing well. Bowdoin has home ice advantage and big game experience. Williams hasn't had a good season in a while, but has the blissful ignorance of a young team unfamiliar with losing on their side and is riding high. Tough call - I'm going to go for a split if only to give everybody a chance to tell me how wrong I am.
- Amherst - Conn - No sign Conn solves the penalty issue yet, so assuming they won't. Amherst sweeps. if Conn stays out of the box, they could surprise on home ice.
- Middlebury - Hamilton - Long trip for Midd. Won't matter. Midd sweeps.
- Colby - Trinity - Long trip for Colby. Will matter. Trinity win and a tie.

Sounds about right.
Would give Williams 3 points vs the PooBears [offense should score].
Colby and Trinity split.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Middlebury@Hamilton-tough for the Panthers to face Coach McNamara on the Russell Sage ice; Midd should sweep

Williams@Bowdoin-Coaches Gillis and O'Neil played together for 2 seasons; high scoring, wild games; split

Colby@Trinity-in the trenches of the war for NESCAC points; Bantams take 3

Amherst@Connecticut College-Camels outstanding on PK; Lord Jeffs sweep

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Amherst playing 1st year goalie Evans against CC...I think I saw Kaselouskas during warm up...could bode I'll for CC

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Tough loss for Amherst/nice win for Connecticut College. Just another night in the NESCAC. Lord Jeffs trailed after 1, led after 2 and saw Conn net 3 in the 3rd.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Hard to know what to think heading back over to New London for round two of Amherst@Connecticut College? I was amazed to see the box score with Amherst out shooting Conn 47-19. I thought the Camels carried play in the 1st, taking the lead late in the period when the Lord Jeffs let down after an excellent PK. Anctil made a move off the right half boards, had space and skated across the slot before scoring on a backhand up back across to Amherst goalie Evans' gloveside. M. Martin then pulled Amherst even with her first of the season on a low shot from the top of the right circle. Next Conn scored a weird goal when play appeared to have been blown dead, I don't think there was any question the whistle was blown, but suddenly as the scrum cleared a goal was signaled and after various conferences the goal, by Farrell, was on the board. The Lord Jeffs inserted Stuart in goal following the play. Prettiest goal of the night saw Amherst cash in an odd rush with a nice feed from right wing finding McBride stickside of Fralick for the redirect. Amherst took the 3-2 lead skating 5x3 with E. Martin banging one home from the edge of the left circle. A wild 3rd period saw the Camels score 3 unanswered and hang on for the 5-4 win. Hunter scored on a sort of change-up shot that she did not get all of from right point on the PP, but Stuart reacted and the puck found the 5 hole. Anctil netted her 2nd of the game on another PP, making it 4-3 and Farrell scored unassisted on a shot I thought deflected off Stuart on a feed from behind the goal line out of the left corner (did not crosscheck this one though). McBride scored off a drop pass on a long slap shot from just inside the right side of the blueline with time running low. Lord Jeffs got the goalie off for an extra attacker and had some pressure, but Fralick, as she was all game, was standing on her head and the horn sounded on the 5-4 Camel victory.
What to make of the NESCAC:

Middlebury still has not pulled away from Williams, whom they face in a home and home two weeks hence. Amherst is 3rd and needs some wins. Trinity, Bowdoin, Conn, Wesleyan and Colby are all currently separated by a mere 2 points (although the NESCAC schedule has Williams, Trinity, Bowdoin, Amherst, Wesleyan and Hamilton with 2 games in hand). My head is spinning just thinking about the tie breaking scenarios come the end of NESCAC play the weekend of 2/22!

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

2-0 Amherst after 1...2 pp goals late in period...CC elbowing and checking catches up to them

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Less than 24 hours after a decidedly sub-par 5-4 loss to Connecticut College (despite out shooting the Camels 47-19), Amherst rebounded in stellar fashion with 1st year tender Evans pitching a 3-0 shutout this afternoon at Dayton Arena in New London. The Camels undisciplined play contributed to their demise, as Amherst cashed in 2 powerplay goals late in the 1st. Conn's five penalties for the day were roughing twice, elbowing, hitting from behind and high sticking. Skating 4x3 Opperman and Ryan played catch at the points before Ryan saw an open shooting lane and laid one on Camel goalie Fralick; she made the initial stop, but E. Martin found the rebound for the put back from the top of the crease. Less than a minute later, still up a skater, Ryan had an opening from the blue line; her shot was on net, Baranek followed, Fralick made the first 2 stops but the puck came clear to Tank low in the left circle and Tank lifted the puck in over Fralick for a 2-0 lead. Amherst had territorial control most of the 2nd and 3rd, winning the one on one battles and controlling the puck with crisp passing, but was unable to solve Fralick, who played another outstanding game in goal for the Camels. Conn pulled Fralick for the extra attacker with 2:50 to play, but the Lord Jeff D were able to limit Conn's ability to get to the net and Evans was sharp when called upon in earning her 4th career shutout. Salmon added an empty net goal from the left half boards off a pass from McBride for the 3-0 final.

Still no clear picture of the NESCAC playoffs.

Comments after this weekend:

- Very surprised by the beating that Trinity administered to Colby this weekend. Thought that Colby would be in the games at least but it appears not so much. Colby could drop out of the playoffs if they don't turn it around quickly.
- Way more surprised by Hamilton taking Middlebury to OT in the second game. Good for them, even though it ended quickly. Perhaps cause for hope for Hamilton for the last few games - maybe they can still squeak into the playoffs.
- Williams sweeps Bowdoin - Williams definitely appear to be for real now after sweeping Bowdoin in Brunswick. Next test - Amherst.
- Connecticut College - They showed they can win against good teams (even though they were outshot 47-19), but the evidence of dirty, undisciplined play continues to grow - 8 of their 11 penalities were roughing, elbowing, checking, cross-checking, high-sticking, and hitting from behind. CrossCheck - it's not the refs at this point, it's the team.....sorry, it is what it is.

Whoever keeps the stat-sheet is blind. There is no way the first game shots were 47-19. It was a very even game, with CC carrying the play for much of the contest and totally dominating at times. Real shot totals probably more like 30-30. But for the penalty # difference, score may have been 5-2 or 5-3.

The 2nd game was just a flat performance [Sr. day issues?]. Started off fine, but the usual dumb penalties [including a lengthy 5 on 3] doomed the Humps again. After the 2 PP goals, the team just seemed listless. Amherst goalie who was shakey in game 1 had a rocking chair game...probably about 10 shots and only one where she actually had to move to make a save. As for the refs....several LordJeff hits and interference [they love the pick play]...were not called, especially in the 3rd. At the end of the day, there is not much separation between these teams.

I'd say a beating was a good description of the Trinity dominance over Colby. Except for a goal on a 5 on 3 power play, Colby never established any offense all weekend, and the scores could easily have been 6 or 8 goals for Trinity in each game.

In the first game I thought that Trinity came out a little nervous, but that went away when Abby Ostrom opened the scoring in the first with a nice backhander over Wheeler's blocker shoulder. Trinity gave the Mules a gift with a give away in the zone early in the second, and you could see the tension come back, but then Emma Tani came back 3 minutes later to tie the score. Trinity hit the post a couple of times and missed the net on good opportunities until Cheeky Herr took a nice feed from Robinson and Heron for the lead. Then we had a play I have not seen in 40 years playing, coaching, and refereeing the game -- Herr had an easy shot at the empty net when a Colby player threw her stick and deflected the puck. The referee in the zone was clueless about the rule and let play continue, signalling a penalty shot. Luckily the second ref knew the rules and Herr's goal was awarded and a penalty assessed. I have to say that week in and week out we have some horrifyingly bad refereeing...

Trinity came out flying in the Saturday contest - Lauren Glynn scored earlyon a rebound of a Tani shot, and when Shannion Farrell rushed the puck the length of the rink for a second quick goal Colby was rattled and took their time out. In the second period the referees took over with some horrible calls and some horrible non-calls, and Trinity ended up on the short end of a two-man down play. Colby scored to make it 3-1, but Lauren Fitzgerald's goal soon after reinstated the 3 goal lead. Brooke Heron added an insurance goal in the third.

We'll see if it holds up this weekend at Bowdoin, but the Trinity team seems to have made dramatic step forward since losing to Williams and then drubbing Manhattanville. It seems like the entire team is playing at a higher level, and there seems to be a consistent intensity level that's sometimes been missing.

If they can maintain this play, my prediction is that they go either 5-1 or 5-0-1 with a loss or tie to Amherst while sweeping both Bowdoin and Wesleyan.

Thanks for the write up!
I am sure one of the other NESCAC team's greatest fears has been the Bantams finding their scoring touch, given the quality of the Pujol/Maxwell tandem in goal. The 10 wins you're predicting could put the Bantams in 3rd place. The standings (http://nescac.com/sports/wice/2013-14/standings) seem to indicate who is playing at home for the conference quarter-finals, but the schedule (http://nescac.com/sports/wice/2013-14/schedule) shows how fluid things can be the last few weeks of the regular season.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

The 2nd game was just a flat performance [Sr. day issues?].

Last home game is St. Mikes, right - didn't do Senior Day for that one because it is midweek?

CC has kind of a weird finishing schedule with the complete gap in the second to last weekend. I guess that they couldn't find someone to fill those dates. Any thoughts on whether that helps or hurts the team going up to Williams to finish the season?

Yes...I'm sure it didn't make sense to do Sr. Day on a random Tues night w/o many parents there...

The 'gap weekend' is strange, especially at the end of the season...I assume they are limited by the good folks at nescac as to how many games they can play, and that means no games that weekend. You would think they would have scheduled the gap earlier in the year, but sometimes it isn't possible to do that. At this point in the season, it may actually help them before they head up to face the Ephs...which should be good close games. [as predicted here, Williams Frosh are playing great...one is leading the league in scoring...as a defenseman no less...and they seem to be getting the goaltending now, which was a huge issue early on].

*** [as predicted here, Williams Frosh are playing great...one is leading the league in scoring...as a defenseman no less...***].

Actually, to take nothing away from a great year that she's posting, I don't think she's leading her team in scoring, never mind the league:

19 Cristina Bravi F SR | Games: 18 Goals: 15 Assists: 12 Points: 27 Conf: Games: 10 Goals: 9 Assists: 3 Points: 12
16 Hanna Beattie D FR | Games: 18 Goals: 7 Assists: 14 Points: 21 Conf: Games: 10 Goals: 6 Assists: 9 Points: 15

She does lead the team in points in conference, though.

And leads the league in Points Per Game:

Point Scoring: GP PPG G- A- P

1 Hanna Beattie Williams FR D 10 1.50 6- 9-15
Emily Fluke Middlebury JR F 12 1.25 7- 8-15
3 Tori Salmon Amherst JR F 10 1.20 9- 3-12
Cristina Bravi Williams SR F 10 1.20 9- 3-12

She is having a great FR year.
