Re: NCHA 10-11.....**** You St. Norbert

If St Thomas is as good as they were last year, this week ends match up against Stevens Point should be very revealing as to how Point will look this year. Way to early to have any feelings yet.

Re: NCHA 10-11.....**** You St. Norbert

This might be a dumb question but how come St. Scholastica is not in the MIAC?

On a different note: Some good matchups this weekend for all NCHA teams to get ready for conference play! I hope that LF starts to find the back of the net and SOON. Does anyone know how long Herring is out? Was it just for the weekend?

I don't believe that St Scholastica is in the MIAC for any of its sports. The men's team is in the NCHA as well. The rest of their sports participate in the UMAC conference which includes MN-Morris, Northland, Northwestern, Crown College, Presentation College...and a bunch more.

I believe the concensus from the MIAC folks is that St Thomas could be down a bit this year.

My understanding is that Lake Forest will have all four players back.

maybe St Thomas had bus legs, but first impression is that the Tommies are not as good as last year. Unimpressed with their Defense, puck handling ability, passing and overall offense. Still too early to tell how good UWSP is. All the scoring was by their freshmen. Still a lot of defensive mistakes. Goal tending appeared solid. Good news is : Superior lost to Concordia mn.:)

Re: NCHA 10-11.....**** You St. Norbert

Well after the 1st weekend is there any clearer picture of where teams stand??

Things we know.
Marian and Finlandia aren't any better than last year.

River Falls looked strong in their beatdown of Bethel. 5 goals, 9 players getting points, shut out for Campbell.

The rest gets tricky.
Looking at Oswego's results with Elmira...maybe Adrian's split with them wasn't as bad as looked on paper.

St Scholastica has looked good in the bits and pieces of the two games I was able to watch, but not really sure how they'll stack up all season. I guess we'll get a better look at them on Tuesday when they cross the bridge to Superior.

Concordia...big not sure here. OT loss to Bethel. 6-0, 5-0 losses to Gustavus. But considering this is the first time they've ever played the Gusties, i'm not sure thats a sign of a bad team.

Eau Claire's split with St Mary's seems about right.

Lake Forest at 4-0...i'd be a little nervous about the fact that they seem to be struggling against weaker teams, but they still win. Giving up 5 goals to St. Olaf today isn't good. Also the penalty situation...averaging 6 penalties a game, that will come back to bite you.

Stevens Point...4-0 as well, as expected. Nbound says they look sloppy, which you can get away with against the teams they've played. I'd say the next 3 games will paint a more accurate picture.

Superior---craptacular start on Friday night. Really should have won the game...just seemed like they were having trouble getting it in the net, to continue last years trend. I'm wondering if Laughlin is going to be having dueling goalies all season again. Team looked much better on Saturday. Should easily win their next 4...nice thing the farthest they have to travel is a few miles up Miller Hill. Adrian series should give us a good idea of the team....but first big test isn't next year. Fully expect the "Jackets to be 11-1 when they meet Gustavus to open up the 2nd half.

St Norbert....I just don't know. Beat Bethel to open the program, lose to St Mary's, impressive win over St Kates, and then fall to Bethel. Probably seeing the effect of an all freshmen team..no consistency. Next weekends rivalry opener with the home-away with Stevens Point should really let us know where they could fit in to the mess.

Anyways...I'm glad its finally here..and the NCHA is rockin.

Re: NCHA 10-11.....**** You St. Norbert

St. Norbert's 3
St. Ben's 2

Looked great against St. Kate's friday night. Game wasn't as close as 4-1.

Looked flat and maybe tired from the travel against Bethel. Give Bethel
credit, they skated hard and really had SNC D on their heels.

Came back today and looked good against St. Ben's, although they did go
down 2-0. St. Ben's goalie (Rolando) looked good and made many saves on
good scoring chances. Score could have been greater. Not sure on shots as
they didn't post during the game.

Re: NCHA 10-11.....**** You St. Norbert

UWS usually has a slow start so given it was their first weekend of games, I'm sure they'll improve. You almost have to give most teams a pass on the first weekend, especially if they have a lot of freshmen. It takes time to build some chemistry.

UWRF vs. Concordia will be an interesting match up, mostly because River Falls has only played one game and it wasn't against a very formidable opponent. Even though Concordia lost to GAC, it was against a power house of a team. Those games hopefully have prepared them. If UWRF comes out and blows them away, they might have LF shaking in their boots for the following weekend. A tone definitely needs to be set this weekend.

St. Norbert vs. UWEC will be very telling for the up and comers. Eau Claire is usually a physical team and against all freshmen, this should serve them well. But Norbert has some scorers up front and Eau Claire has traditionally struggled in net.

Scholastica vs. UWS....? I don't know anything about Scholastica and I'm sure Laughlin will have his team prepared for conference play.

Adrian vs. Marian - Adrian

Scholastica vs. LF could be an interesting series, depending on how Scholastica's game vs. UWS goes. I still haven't seen Herring on the scoresheet or the roster for LF. She's listed on their school's website roster but not USCHO's. If she's out, this could spell trouble for this team and probably explain why they've struggled offensively. Although, I'm not sure I'd call an 8 goal game an offensive struggle but yes, letting up 5 goals to Olaf isn't anything to brag about. Either their defense is very weak this year or their goalie didn't show up to play.

Finally, Finlandia vs. UWS. UWS in a blow out.

Good luck to all teams!! Let conference play begin.

Re: NCHA 10-11.....**** You St. Norbert

Herring is out with an injury, but will be back in a few games for sure. I am looking at this as a positive, as they continue to play their freshman and they gain experience, and the team is winning along the way. They added 7 freshman who will all contribute (and have), to an already more than adequate lineup. It is so early on, but I like what's happening. They get a ton of shots a game, goaltending really is not an issue, but what may be is penalties.

Re: NCHA 10-11.....**** You St. Norbert

Been doing a lot of driving, here on the East Coast, with two kids who played travel hockey.

But looking at the NCHA schools ~~ wow! How long are those bus rides for away games, especially for Lake Forest & teams traveling to LF?

I'm guessing the number of bus-hours over the course of a season is ridiculous, no?

In general, yes. Especially with the addition of Adrian into the league.

Looking at Superior's Drives to league schools--just going city to city on google maps
Shortest now--St Scholastica about 15 minutes
Eau Claire--2 hr 34 mins
River Falls--2 hr 56 min
Finlandia--4 hr 3 min
Stevens Point--4 hr 33 min
St Norbert--5 hr 31 min
Marian--5 hr 54 min
Concordia--6 hr 57 min
Lake Forest -- 7 hr 49 min
Adrian-- 12 hr 12 min

A team like Stevens Point that is centralized wouldn't have quite as bad of travel, but it would still suck. The shortest trip for Adrian is to Lake Forest and comes in just under 5 hours.

Quick look @ Lake Forest, 6 of the 10 NCHA opponents are 5 hours or more away!

Dontyell... We are spoiled here in the east for sure. I had one daughter at a NH prep (now she is at Lake Forest), and the other still at a MA prep and things were easier. That being said, with the weight of the NE NESCACs, the NCHA is if you will the Midwest version. Great education, with the small school feel. Along with the education come a lesson in geography for sure. Her prep was in the middle of now where (yet a great school, she loved that experience also), but now enjoys living in one of the richest communities in the nation, and only a short train ride to Chicago. Another part of the experience she likes is playing against/with different kids from all over. Seems most of us in the NE end up seeing the same faces, not meant in any bad way.
