NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

Re: NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

Hobart behind Babson? Sorry I don't see it. Hobart has to hope for a M-ville win and a Norwich win to have a shot now.

I had a bad feeling Hobart would end up behind Babson. Based on primary criteria, they are tied 2-2 (BTW- Babson getting the point for a COP record of 2-0 vs 3-0-1 is lame). My guess is they gave Babson the bump because they have the chance to keep winning and strengthening their case?

Some other thoughts/questions:

- If Norwich does not win the ECAC-E Hobart is done. Period.

- I'm not sure a Neumann win in the ECAC-W final can propel them past EITHER Hobart or Babson....if you are looking at the primary criteria?

- I think Hobart needs Babson to lose to UMB...before they ever get to Norwich. If Babson wins and go to the ECAC-E final that may put Hobart in the permanent "rear-view mirror" behind Babson. A loss in their league semifinal and the numbers start to look awful close again....and in Hobart's favor (IMO)

-Based on Oswego's current ranking...you'd have to think the comittee is pretty keen on them for a Pool C in the case that Platty wins the SUNYAC. So, let's go Lakers!

Re: NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

Plattsburgh's SOS is better than Oswego's. Osego is way too high and Plattsburgh is way too low. It makes no mathematical sense.
Now that I look at Oswego in the broader East (instead of just against PSU) how can they, with the 22nd SOS, and the 15th RNK, be ranked #3 even if their WIN is #2?

Re: NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

Platty is getting screwed over. it's a shame because they are probably the hottest team in the country right now.

Who cares? Win on Saturday and you have nothing to worry about.

Actually you do. It has little to do with Plattsburgh getting a Pool C. That part is a slim to none. Point is there is NO reason for Oswego to be so high. IF Plattsburgh wins being so low would mean a play in game where if Oswego wins/loses they would still get a home game?? The numbers just dont supoort it

I agree with that! There is going to be lots of crazy people from those schools between "5-15" next week, when their teams don't get to the dance. JUST WIN SATURDAY!

Re: NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

Since the other 2 primary criteria are useful only in H2H comparisons, I thought I'd look at WIN, SOS, and RNK. Prof will find no redeeming mathematical value in the following, but that's fine, it's just for fun.
I make no claims that it has any value, mathematical or otherwise.

Numbers represent rank within the East only - since nobody from the West has complained since 5:30pm.

Team WIN SOS RNK TOTAL

Norwich 1 9 2 12
Utica 4 2 3 9
Oswego 2 22 15 39
Bowdoin 2 32 5 39
Babson 11 8 6 25
Hobart 5 7 7 19
Neumann 10 13 7 30
Williams 9 14 13 36
Trinity 12 21 4 37
UMA-B 6 24 12 42
PSU 7 19 7 33
Castleton 15 11 7 33
Mville 17 6 19 42
Amherst 13 12 14 39
Plymouth 8 29 20 57
Middlebury 20 1 18 39

Re: NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

Except for formatting issues :D your info looks good.

I'm not sure that adding the ordinal values exactly the best procedure, but it does help to point out Oswego and Bowdoin are ranked a lot higher than they should be.

Re: NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

I am beginning to think Oswego is so high due to the potential for a decent crowd if they make it to Placid. Of course Plattsburgh should be higher to if that is the case, so I really have no idea why Oswego is so high. They have a shot on Saturday to show they can beat a top team but they have not shown it to this point. Even if they win Saturday their season as a whole does not warrant a home NCAA game, unless it's a play-in. I am sure they will get one though as apparently to committee knows something that those of us who have been watching them all year don't.

I'm thinking the NC$$ wants to do their best to make sure at least Oswego or Plattsburgh gets to Lake Placid, it was "more justifiable" to leave Oswego ranked high than to try to raise Plattsburgh into Pool C range.

Re: NCAA Rankings 2/19/13

It'll be interesting to see what Josh thinks of this when the next edition of "Bracketology" is published.

Interesting to note that of all the D3 teams still playing this weekend only these are not NCAA "ranked":
Northland and UMass-Dartmouth.

Could/would the NCAA ever put together conferences with even distribution of teams so we dont have some with 10 teams and others with not enough to qualify for a Pool A bid? This process is nuts!:(
