Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

The Prez and CardsRuletheBurgh are officially coming tomorrow!!!

Hopefully we'll be able to meet up with all of the Norwich posters again. I believe I've met Charlie, Jerry, Puckvoice and thats actually it out of the Wick posters.

NUProf and Steve Day are on my list for this season.

Lets go Eagles!!!

Prez...keep me updated tonight?

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

In the team-by-team PWC comparison rankings, I understand the PTS, but can someone (perhaps NUProf, with his math background) explain the PWR comparison? Maybe I'm missing it somewhere, but I couldn't find an explaination of how is is calculated, or what it means. This is not an effort to find one more supporting statistic for favoring my Cadets, I've been curious for a while.

The PWR number is a cumulative count of the number of comparisons won. In each comparison, count the number of points. The team with the greater number of points has one added to their PWR. This is left over from the time when USCHO used the PWR totals to rank the teams. The problem is that since the weights of each of the categories aren't fixed, this total doesn't provide much useful information in predicting how the committee will rank the teams. If you go to the last comparison in each team's block (to Elmira vs Williams, and NU vs. Williams, you will find that Elmira has 17 PWR points, and NU has 24. This means that the committee should rank Norwich ahead of Elmira if they weighted each of the categories equally. (Interestingly, the data shows Oswego ahead of NU, with 25 comparisons won)

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

March 12th quote from the Elmira Star Gazette: Elmira head coach Aaron Saul said following the Soaring Eagles' win over Curry, "We're going to be playing in an environment that will be pretty hostile."

Actually, I have always found Norwich to be a very warm, courteous and welcoming environment ;) but also with a hockey savvy crowd of fans who love and supports their team.:D

Had I scrolled through the comparisons, one-by-one, instead of spot checking interesting possible matchups, I might have noticed the cumulative nature of the PWR numbers. Probably not - I was sure they were some esoteric calculation understandable only by retired math professors

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

It is almost 2 and a half hours to game time and the waiting is killing me.:( By the way, NU and Plattsburg women tied up at 1 goal apiece after one period.:)

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Elmira played Norwich tougher than just about anyone has this season. What a superb game and we will see more of this Elmira club. What a game that could have gone either way.

Congratulations to a great Elmira Hockey Team!

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Thank you Klinger! Without his stop on the 3-0 breakaway, the goal(s) would have meant nothing. A great game by Elmira. From what we saw tonight, they deserved to be there.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Update: According to WDEV (Cadets Radio) this will be THE LATE GAME on Friday.

What a game, what a finish. That was totally draining. Tuttle was was outstanding and and Elmira played a smart, disciplined game. Give them a lot of credit. At the end, i think Norwich's speed and conditioning finally came through. Lots of credit to Elmira - they gave us a heck of a scare. It was a great game, and the decision was right in front of me - two great goals!

It was cool meeting the Prez and the Burgh --- Jerry ratted me out :)

On to Lake Placid

Great game.....but Jezuum, Charlie was as negative as anything during the NSN feed. Have a little faith... You may be an upperclassman, but I'm reserving the right to tell you to LIGHTEN UP! The kid's are fine, trust me.:D

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Midway through the third period the shot count was something like 30-8 Norwich. I can never recall Norwich trailing in a game when the shots were so one sided. But hey that is the way Elmira wanted to play the game, very desciplined and clogging the shooting lanes. The stratedy almost won the game for Elmira. Tutle was outstanding and left very few dangerous rebounds for Norwich forwards. Norwich goalie Ryan Klingensmith also made a number of key saves. After being outplayed for half the first period Norwich picked it up a notch and forced the play for most of the rest of the game. Norwich tied it up on a goal by Steven Schroeder in the last minute with Pier-Oliver Cotnoir scoring the game winner in OT. Was very impressed by the skill level and disciplined play of Elmira.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

My friends sitting with me kept saying that Elmira was the better team tonight (said constantly until Steve Schroeder scored with 48 seconds left in the game;) ). In a way, I think they were correct. It seemed that Wick's passing game was off, many turn overs, bouncing pucks over sticks, and passes too far ahead or behind. In the first period, Wick looked flat but picked it up in the second and third. What caused the difference in the Cadets play and was Elmira really the better team? I think this was the first game I have seen Norwich tested and frustrated by the opponents defense. I think Elmira got their goal and then sat back and played outstanding defense. They took away the passing lanes, forced turnovers and at some points, looked like they were playing a man to man defense. However, Elmira wasn't the better team because you usually can't win games unless you put shots on goal. Wick never gave up and continued to put the puck to Tuttle, who by the way, deserved player of the game, he was awesome. I think these two teams were fairly evenly matched, but would say Norwich was the over all better team because of their persistence and outstanding team work. Congrats to you Cadets, see you in Lake Placid. Keep up the team work. And Elmira, great effort and thanks for playing a tough, but clean game. As someone else posted earlier, you truly deserved to be in this game.:D

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

I'm still trying to figure out why we were outshot so badly. That was our downfall. Elmira had several opportunities to put this game out of reach but again like in the Manhattanville game failed to do so.

Well, Prez is a nice guy, and worth meeting. I was glad to catch up (a little) with him lastnight.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

More to come tomorrow, but this is all I've got for tonight:

1. Kyle Thomas is good.

2. Casey Tuttle is great.

3. Norwich as a team is greater.

Sums up tonight pretty simply from my eyes.:)
