NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

A little off topic but I thougt the video stream of the SNC/Adrian game was excellent for most of the game. I agree with others that the video stream is an excellent way to showcase your program with potential recruits and their parents.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Given the emphasis placed on hockey (men's and women's) at Elmira, you would think it would get more attention. It doesn't have to cost much or take that much effort or training to put on a much better product. Maybe peer pressure will make something happen.

Interesting take--LakeEagleLover and for the most part I agree.

I am surprised, e.g. Elmira NY has a population of close to 31,000. The closest "big city" to Norwich is the state capital, Montpelier, only ten miles away from the NU campus with a population of 8,000. Maybe there is just more to do in Elmira, hence EC hockey is just not that important. :( ...which your posted reply indicates is really not the case).

Maybe they just have to begin to think about more strategic implications in order to understand the media branding importance of video streaming. I had to smile when I heard during the broadcast of the Bowdoin Colby game when they reported that they had over 900 viewers. I believe Norwich gets over 3,000 viewers for most broadcasts (Charlie Crosby will have to confirm that)--including listening alumni in Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, etc.

And while I do hold the NCAA responsible for the final media product for this tournement, Elmira College also bears some responsibility simply because it reflects on their school's brand. No way around that one. Hopefully as more baby steps are taken the overall product will just improve in time. :)

Don't forget Elmira has to compete with an ECHL team in the Jackals that averages 4000 fans a game.

Norwich doesn't have that kind of competition.

Absolutely. Like I said in my reply there is just more to do beyond even hockey in Elmira than Northfield, Vermont. However, as someone else pointed out the cost of the technology is not all that expensive and as other schools are already doing (although Norwich has opted for a professional), there are loads of junior and senior students in communications looking for a broadcasting gig to gain some experience.

I am not sure that it doesn't take a much to move what I saw last night up several notches and reinforcing the value of the Elmira College brand. As someone said, maybe it will just take peer pressure. Enough said. :)

Good luck to the Cadets this weekend as we welcome Elmira College to "The Berg.":)

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Just curious but could someone tell me if Elmira is going to arrive at the Barre/Montpelier Friday for an early practice at Norwich. Being a 7+- drive I would think the team would want to get settled a day before the game.

I would guess they would definitely choose to head up on Friday at the latest.

Also, does anyone know if Norwich will come out Saturday with the Cadets lining the entrance swords drawn overhead?

Still think that has to be the coolest entrance in D-III hockey.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

No hawk, they are going to bus straight in arriving around 5pm on Saturday.....come a guy with your knowledge should know better:) :) :D

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

The NCAA had no problem with us doing the video stream for Saturday's game. The numbers were are getting for viewers has been just unbelievable. We are planning on doing much more next year.

Any chance of selected road games?

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

One of the reasons we are having good tech success is that we have a direct internet cable, if the team we are playing at has cable access in their rink that could become a possibility. We will be looking for sponsors next year to help defray the cost.

Any chance of selected road games?

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

I started a new thread on the topic of online video...... seems to be a topic of interest deserving its own forum.

Stay in Montpelier, it's about 10 miles from Northfield. It doesn't have much to do, but it has *some* things to do at least.

I stayed at the econo lodge near northfield and did not have a good stay (they could have at least ran the water in the room before we checked in, since it hadn't been used in weeks/months).

The second time, I stayed at the comfort inn in montpelier, and even though the drive was longer, it was worth it.

Here is a few to pick from:

1. Hilltop Inn, Montpelier, VT (Berlin) $61. a night

2. Comfort Inn & Suites of Maplewood, Montpelier, VT (Berlin) 114. a night

3. Capital Plaza, Montpelier

4. Hollow Inn & Motel, Barre, VT $95. a night

Barre might have a few motels that cost less then the ones above.

Sarducci's in Montpelier is a sure bet if you like italian. There are several other choices in the downtown area as well. Julio's on State St is reasonable mexican. J. Morgan's Steakhouse in the lobby of the Capital Plaza hotel (also State St), has provided some great meals at slightly higher prices that the other 2.
