NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Just read Tim Costello's column "Norwich xs Elmira" on the Div III home page. A glowing testamonial to Norwich, but no mention of Elmira in the write up. They were however placed magnanimously in the stat column, so technically the story line was correct. I guess this makes Elmira'a chances slim and none, what a crock !!!! Rodney Dangerfield got no respect and it doesn't look like Elmira has any either.

Hey Beagle ... they'll get plenty of respect tonight at Kreitzberg ... Hobart came in in a very similar situation a few years ago and took the Cadets out in this round ... We know the ECAC West is tough ... I guarantee you Mike McShane and his staff will make sure his team knows all about that ... and I'll take care of reminding the fans! ;)

Costello's Preview

Costello's Preview

Great job of research and respect for the game {sarcasm} ... other than naming the two possible schools, not a single word about the home team's opponent.

He knows who's going to advance, so why waste the time :D

Seriously, I would have liked to see more info about Elmira, but one reason I follow the boards so closely is to educate myself about the opposition. I know who Tuttle, Masters, and Vallaincourt are. But, I do think Klinger > Tuttle, and the Forkey, Anderson, Thomas line > any line Elmira can put together. :D

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

PuckVoice is right Elbojpb - the Cadet fans (in this home, anyway) are NOT expecting a cakewalk, we are more than aware that there is not an 'easy' team left, never mind that on any given night, any team can truly win. It is even overshadowing the first Sox broadcast on NESN.......
I am bringing the correct towel to wave, getting the right shirt ready to wear, making sure I have all luck protocol in place - Good luck to both teams!

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

As a Norwich fan, I would have liked more information on Elmira as well....I also noticed in the tale of the tape that not only is Norwich the ECAC-E champs, but have a 23-1-4 NESCAC record as well..... Fact check anyone?:p

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

In the team-by-team PWC comparison rankings, I understand the PTS, but can someone (perhaps NUProf, with his math background) explain the PWR comparison? Maybe I'm missing it somewhere, but I couldn't find an explaination of how is is calculated, or what it means. This is not an effort to find one more supporting statistic for favoring my Cadets, I've been curious for a while.

Good teams in any sport rely on talent and skills. Great teams combine all that with discipline and a focus on what is needed to get the job done in the next game--not what may happen two games from now.

And yes, not enough has been written about EC. :(

So make no mistake, I don't think anyone has taken Elmira for granted most of all the Norwich team and certainly not its coaching. Recommend that you go to www.nsnradio.net ... the George "Puck Voice" Commo Archive ... scroll down to the last date on the Archive 3-12-2010 ... today's Big Sports Show ... an interview with Norwich's Coach McShane runs in the last half hour of the two hour show.

Listen to that and you realize not only is there a great deal of respect for Elmira but for any team that has gotten this far. Assuming that the eight remaining teams in this NCAA are arriving with at least some equality of hockey competence--then in most cases the winner will be determined by the team that keeps its eye on the immediate game and can execute their game plan. And not by pre-game predictions :)

I have read all I can about Elmira but sadly there was almost too much written on USCHOL about the Elmira/Manhattanville NCAA situation that the real story about how skilled EC is was lost. Fact is: EC did not get the pre-game press it rightfully deserves. :(

But from what I can see from their stats and schedule they seem like a wonderful representative for the ECAC-W and will be tough opponents for NU. It should be a great game. :)

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Any way you look at it Elmira will be a tough matchup for Norwich. Any team with good goaltending, defense, and scoring can get the job done. I also noticed that there special teams stats were just as good as Norwich too. When I saw the NCAA matchups Sunday night I couldn't believe Norwich being the number 1 seed got Elmira. Oswego in my book got the much easier game against Bowdoin (saw Bowdoin play twice this year). Also Norwich didn't have to play in game Wednesday but did play 2 very plysical games against NEC and Babson last weekend.

Looking back at the Curry/Elmira game I recall Curry was assessed a lot more penalty minutes than Elmira. Just curious if the reason was Curry agressive play or was it the only way Curry could stop a more talented team? I am a little concerned because Norwich plays a Canadian style of play with a lot of plysical contact.

Agreed...I think Oswego got the easier draw of the two (no disrespect to Bowdoin), but because Elmira is seeded lower than Bowdoin, Norwich gets the lower seed.

Much like the NCAA Men's basketball bracket, it's not really about the seeding but more about who you draw.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Elmira's tank job down the stretch did them in more than anything.

2-5 in your last seven isn't going to get you a very good seed, especially when you had already lost three games before that.

I too wish it was different. But, maybe it's a good thing that Oswego and Elmira aren't playing each other in the NCAA Quarters. That would have been awful for me.

Also, don't forget that Oswego could have passed Norwich in the NCAA rankings with their stomping of Plattsburgh while Norwich beat teams in the ECAC E tournament with worse records.

We don't know if Oswego was the #1 Eastern seed or not because the committee could do anything they darn well pleased with the rankings and we wouldn't know because the last set of rankings are not released.

True...But I have to believe Norich was the #1 seed because in theory, the two teams that played in the play-in game in the East are the lowest ranked teams in the East. It would make sense that the highest seed in the East would get the lowest possible seed in the Quarters (i.e Elmira or Curry).

That's why Curry remains DIII Hardcore Champs

Elmira's NCAA Preview was published on Wednesday, since they were in the play-in game against Curry.

I hope I do not jinx the EC team by saying this, but they actually returned to their A game against Curry. Curry spent a vast majority of the game in their defensive zone and it is a lot harder (takes more energy) to play defense than offense. Eventually you get tired out and have to penalties to stop a quality scoring chance. Unfortunately for Curry, their penalty kill wasn't very effective either.

EC is a very dangerous team right now. Besides wanting to finally gain that elusive national championship, they also are playing to prove they belong in this tournament. Not to mention that they want to prove the ECAC West is a conference to be reckoned with and not on life support. When EC is on their A game, they can beat any team. In a way I am glad that there seems to only be three names on the oppositions radar. In fact, there are a lot of roll players who do not nearly get the credit they deserve. In my opinion, the "best" player on the team gets virtually no attention. In a way, that is probably a very good thing for EC tonight.

I wonder if Scott is supposed to submit something about Elmira to finish the article?

Here is a staff compiled write up that was in today's Elmira Star Gazette

Great staff report:rolleyes:

At least they got SOARING Eagles right finally instead of calling them the Golden Eagles like they have all season.
