NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

More to come tomorrow, but this is all I've got for tonight:

1. Kyle Thomas is good.

2. Casey Tuttle is great.

3. Norwich as a team is greater.

Sums up tonight pretty simply from my eyes.:)

Great post - sums up a great game. As I told you before the game, Thomas may not be as flashy as Kashirsky, but he has more speed.

Tough for either team to lose that one. NU won't quit we've pulled out a couple of games with EA goals, and technically the Schroeder's was an EA goal. Classy, Classy game by Elmira, who showed they deserved to be there.

Dang, why does this site eat my posts and spit them out in triplicate hours later?

Heartbreaking loss for the Elmira Class of 2010 - a great group of outstanding young men who happen to be great hockey players... :D :p

I will be proud to give them one last "Standing O" when they walk the graduation stage, assuming I have not been reduced to a blubbering idiot watching my daughter taker her final bow in purple..... :( ;)

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Last nights game was very stressful for Norwich crowd. As my family and I sat at ice level hoping for a goal until late in the third period. It was as all of you have said a well played game by Elmria.
Glad our boys are moving on and get to play Platty again.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

There's a lot of talk about officiating in both the Plattsburgh/Middlebury and the Oswego/Bowdoin game threads. I would just like to say, overall I was thoroughly impressed with the officiating last night. They were as consistent as anybody could ask a referee to be. Yes, they missed a few. Elmira got away with a few hooks and cross-checks, Norwich got away with a few trips and one particular hit after the whistle on Darcy Vaillancourt that Prez and I both thought should have been called, seeing it from opposite sides of the arena at that point. But overall, very consistent officiating. Penalties were 5-for-10 both ways, and the only penalty where I didn't see the penalty committed was Kyle Thomas' Roughing Penalty at 3:03 of the 3rd, but that was one of the rare moments when play was away from Mr. Thomas and so I wasn't looking there.

In the second, things started getting a bit too physical, with a lot of shoving and jawing after the whistle, and I thought the refs got that under control really quick. That said, the Sanders interference call in the second shocked me, because after the play you had 2 Elmira players wailing away on a Norwich player who was curled up on the ground. I was shocked not to see a Game Misconduct to one of them, let alone just a 2-minute minor for cross-checking . But that was balance out by the play in which Rusty Masters was hurt. All that was called was a 2-minute minor, but that looked like a clear-as-day 5 minutes for boarding. I was glad to see Rusty back on the ice later in the game. When he went off the ice, he looked done for the season (although I suppose now he is...). Despite these minors that probably should have been more, this was all-in-all one of the best officiating jobs I have seen in DIII in some time. I never even saw a bad offsides or icing call or no-call!

And if I'm going to be praising the officials, I might as well make a specific callout to Mr. Joel Dupree. After taking a slapshot clean to the face (no deflection, just a misfired slapshot), and very clearly breaking his nose, he was able to go to the locker room while the area with his blood was cleaned, clean up, and be back on the ice before the puck dropped again. That's an official dedicated to the game if I've ever seen one!

I hope the officials in LP are just as good as these guys were last night.

An excellent summary of one of the better officiating jobs we've seen this year.

I have agree. The zebras did a great job. Man was there a lot of blood on the ice where Dupree was hit. As I recall, that was off a Kyle Thomas shot, and Mr. Thomas has a heavy shot. I was shocked to see him come back on the ice. I thought for a minute that they brought out a standby official to finish the game.

The hit on Masters was right in front of me, and it was enough of a ways away from the boards that it made sense the way it was called, but I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been called a 5 min boarding penalty.

Hope you enjoyed the Kreitzberg experience. We try to be hospitable to visiting fans, but send them home with a loss.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Officiating was great last night. Shea might be one of the best I've seen. If he does the Vermont games regularly, you guys are blessed to have him.

Still haven't gotten around to collecting my thoughts yet. Still painful to think about the way it all ended last night.

I will say though I was very disappointed in a couple of Norwich fans last night when Rusty Masters was hurt and barely moving after the hit from behind with about five minutes to go.

I know this happens everywhere and in no way am I painting all Norwich fans with the same brush. Just wanted to make mention of it real quick.

When Masters was down and laying on the ice in a fairly quiet arena, a man on the other side of the rink down towards the other end (opposite zamboni entrance) started chanting as loud as he could (and he had Remy/Big Goon type pipes) "Lets go Norwich", "Lets go Norwich"

I couldn't believe that someone would do that while a player was laying on the ice barely moving (possible concussion) etc. Thankfully a Norwich fan came down from the top of his section and had some stern words for this man pointing and telling him to basically shut up while a player was down on the ice.

The other instance came not 20 feet away from where Nate and I were sitting where a guy in the corner said "Take off your skirt."

I couldn't hold it in at that point and responded with a "real classy you are" and a stare towards where the quip came from.

Nothing escalated from there thankfully...all that happened after were looks at me and in the direction where the comment came from but no one said anything else and attention returned to the ice.

Thankfully Rusty was okay and able to return. I didn't even see him come back onto the ice later in the game but it certainly hurt not having him out there for the 5x3 PK.

I honestly thought Elmira had the game won once they killed that off, but it was not meant to be.

I called it all night that from about the 10 minute mark of the first period Norwich was a ticking time bomb just waiting to explode. It finally happened with 48 seconds left and for all intents and purposes the game was over right there.

Norwich knew they were going to win. Elmira knew Norwich was going to win. The crowd unfortunately at that point knew and like the entire night, expected Norwich to win.

Biggest kudos I have is to the Elmira forwards and defenseman for throwing their bodies in front of EVERYTHING. They clogged lanes and sacrificed their bodies every chance they got. It was the only way they could keep up with a clearly superior Norwich team who was bigger, faster, and stronger in every facet of the game.

Marty Lee played a FANTASTIC game for Elmira. He is going to turn into one of our best defensemen we've had here in a while if he keeps growing and improving his next two years.

The game winning goal was tough to swallow because of a terrible terrible turnover by I believe Wilcox. He tried to clear the puck and got next to nothing on it. The Norwich player corralled the puck, wheeled towards the net, got off the shot and then banged home the rebound on his knees before Tuttle could recover and get the pad over to the near post.

Once again, thanks for the fantastic memories seniors. Rusty, Casey, Greg, and Scott, you were a great class and led Elmira back to national powerhouse status. Sadly, somehow, you never won an ECAC West title or a national championship and don't have much in the way of titles to commemorate all your accomplishments at Elmira.

Casey's numbers aren't there for AA. But, let me tell you the man deserves it. He shut out the nation's top ranked team for 59:12 making some unreal saves. He's done this many times in his career.

He outplayed his counterpart (Klingensmith), who will likely be the 1st team AA goalie. Granted, Klinger didn't have many opportunities to make saves because of Norwich's clear domination of the game, but to me I wasn't impressed. Nor was I when I saw him his freshman year in Oswego in the Quarterfinals.

Not taking anything away from Klinger and the year he has had because clearly the numbers are there and he along with Norwich's impressively mobile, but also big and physical defensive unit that have only given up 40 goals all season.

Also, the 3 on 0 for Vaillancourt at the end of the game was not a 3 on 0. It was a 3 on 1 and Klinger made the save not only there but on the next chance Darcy had as well, which was a shot from the side of the net and a 2 on 1 I believe.

As Nate pointed out, Sanders got away with just a two minute penalty when he and another EC player jumped the Norwich player after the whistle. EC jumped him because the Norwich player took a swipe at Tuttle, but they definitely took it too far. You can protect your goalie, no problem with that. But, you still might get a penalty and Sanders was lucky to get away with two.

The cheap shot that I didn't like from Norwich was the one on Vaillancourt behind the play in the first period. Completely behind the play after the puck was already past the blueline, Darcy got railed by Coon or Baker. Completely uncalled for and unnoticed by the refs. Luckily Darcy was able to return for his next shift but he was down on the ice for awhile and was doubled over on the bench for a little while.

Very impressed by the speed of Kyle Thomas and Tory Allen. I'd like to see Allen race Musselwhite. It'd be a great race to watch. Thomas is going to be an absolute stud if he sticks around all four years. He was the best player (goalie not included) on the ice by far last night and had a couple of grade A scoring chances. He was always around the puck and always creating while he was out there. I think I noticed him nearly every time he was on the ice.

Norwich is a **** good hockey team and would present one HELL of a challenge to Oswego if they met in the finals. Being probably one of the few people who has seen both teams live so far this year.....Game of the century if it happens. But, I'm sure Plattsburgh and SNC would like nothing more than to make sure that dream final doesn't happen.

Whew...okay that actually turned into most of my thoughts on the game. But as I said last night. The three biggest things from this game to sum it up:

#1 Kyle Thomas is good.

#2 Casey Tuttle is great.

#3 Norwich as a team, is greater.

Watching last night's game the result was actually pretty predictable. The score was much closer than play indicated. Norwich outshot EC 39-13 and manhandled them all over the ice.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

I was very impressed with the way Elmira handled themselves. They certainly deserved to be in the NCCA tournament. Tuttle played outstanding and he certainly can steal a game. Thank God it did not end up being against the Cadets. It would be nice if we could schedule Elmira in future NC games. I was looking forward to seeing Wick play them in the 08-09 Times Argus but unfourtanly it never happened. :)

Give Elmira a lot of credit - they had a game plan, and they stuck to it. Don't try to run and gun with Norwich. They were 48 seconds away from pulling it off. It was smart hockey.

Prez - Klinger was not at the top of his game last night, especially in the first two periods. If not for an alert defenseman he almost made a horrible mistake in the second. He did stone that breakaway in the third, and that was huge.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

NUProf;4694552Prez - Klinger was not at the top of his game last night said:
And at another point in the third, he got very lucky. I believe it was Vaillancourt who put one up over Klinger's shoulder, and into the net, but the whistle CLEARLY blew before the puck went in because the net had become dislodged. I honestly think that may have been the turning point in the game, because it was the first event of chance to go Norwich's way ALL GAME.

If that goes in, Elmira wins 2-1, or maybe even 2-0 because Elmira rides that momentum to the end.

Prez - I was sitting a row away from you, heard/saw the same idiots, and feel that we should apologize for the way they behaved. Your team was a class act. Sorry for the fools in the stands.

3/13/2010: Norwich Hockey's Magical Minute.

I feel like this could be a short webisode narrated by Commo's legendary voice. It's too bad he didn't have the call of the women's comeback too.

Both men and women's programs scored game tying and for the women, game winning goals in the last 1:30 of the third period.

Congrats to both the men's and women's programs. Norwich certainly does it right in every aspect. They may be from the CCCP but they have my respect and I certainly envy their success.

Last thought:

I won't mention names but a certain PLATTSBURGH fan that just so happened to travel with me up to the game mentioned the word shutout with about 2 minutes to go in the game...

This in tune to last week when a certain RIT fan started chanting its all over with 8 seconds left in a one goal game...

Two more examples of why EVERYTHING is always Plattsburgh's and RIT's fault.

You shouldn't have let him wear purple :D if you'd a wanted to win :D

I told you last night, and I will say it again. The Norwich fans behind us (and in from of DH003325), one of whom I just learned in the Attendance thread was actually peddler, were asking "wouldn't this be the first time this year they didn't score?" to which I responded "yes, this would be their first shutout of the year." I'll agree, you had about enough time to say "Didn't I tell you not to say that word?" before Schroeder scored. I apologize if it was my fault, but I still insist we blame those Norwich fans! :D
