National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Yay, that's three in the title game and Yale last year on their way to an amazing title run. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

This cuts the other way, of course. It means whenever the ECAC has a great team making moves in the tourney they invariably run into Minnesota. Hence, even though Minnesota has lost the 4 finals they have played against ECAC teams, those 4 teams were all different. The Gophers were the constant. And indeed Minnesota has won (5) just two fewer NCAA titles than the 12 current members of the ECAC (7), and just 4 fewer than the number won by ECAC members at the time of their inclusion in the conference (9).

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

It is interesting to watch the local media backpedal a bit about Dinkytown last night. The first night it was a riot, but now it's been downgraded to a disturbance. I still think if there had not have been so many cameras and 3 helicopters around, nothing major would have happened. I think media is realizing that too.

19 arrests vs. 5 for Union. Percentage wise they're higher, right? :p

Neither one of those were riots. When I saw the footage from Dinkytown I just had to chuckle.

Obviously Vancouver was off the charts, but when it comes to student riots, this is how it's done...

I was there.

Can't believe I found this on Youtube...

I watched the squad car get turned over. I'm just off camera to the left as the morons are kicking it and I was leaving the vicinity (of the car) when it went up and felt the air expand.

Luckily, I've always been a happy drunk and either way didn't see the point in kicking the squad car. This was 91 or 92 (before cell phones) I believe and even back then, they got just about everyone on video and prosecuted them.

**** got real once the car went up and I remember the effects of tear gas and it isn't fun at all. Was cutting down an alley to get to my car and a mountain of a riot cop was blocking my way with a baton and I wasn't talking my way past that and went the long way around instead.

Anyway, Minneapolis press making fools of themselves on this one.

PS - The following year, some creative people were selling t-shirts and bumper stickers that said, "Coon Creek... it's a Riot" with a graphic of a squad car overturned and burning. Had the sticker on my car, got pulled over about a block from my house after bar, was made to recite the alphabet backwards (nailed it :D), was told to leave my car and walk home. No problem officer.

Removed the sticker the next morning. No reason to antagonize... :o

I wanted to post this in the Gopher thread, but it appears to have been locked so I'll post it here instead. Where do Minnesota fans get their bad reputation? Because of what I had read on here, I was very surprised by how classy Minnesota fans are. I lost track of how many different fans came up to congratulate us on the National Championship at the post-game at Xfinity Live. I kept getting stopped by fans wearing Gopher jerseys to tell me what a great team Union have and how we 100% deserved the championship. They have a great team, great fans, and are still the class of college hockey. Hopefully we'll see you again next year in Boston!

Speaking from experience of dealing with Gopher fans on a regular basis (I'm an Minnesota State fan), it comes from the bandwagon jumpers, not the regulars that are making a trip to Philly to see their team play. It's the guys that watched 1.5 games (the last half of the UND game and the Championship game) all year and act like they know everything about "their team" and everything about every other team that plays. They never mention the Gopher hockey team and all of a sudden, they're wearing a hockey sweater as if they go to every game. The thing with MN is they have so many fans and alumni. "The U" is the flagship of this state for schools. That means that every person that lives here has a connection to MN. Not only do they have all their alumni, but they also have people that have never stepped foot on campus claiming them as their team. It's really the law of numbers. We know every school has their share of jackholes, it's just that there so many more chances for the Gophers fans to be that jackhole since there are so many fans.

The technical term for this is Michigan Syndrome.

If football is any guide, in about a decade it's going to be the calling card of Penn State.

The jackholes tend to be the loudest and most persistent too.

The one thing that Minnesota will always be guilty of (myself at times as well, though I am working on it) is the provincialism. Minnesota hockey fans also tend to be very provincial (much of that relating back to the exclusive nature of our recruiting for decades).

I think Bale nailed it, I would just add the provincialism aspect to what he said.

For me, the answer is "at Mariucci Arena." My father has his PhD from UMTC and I always had a bit of a soft spot for them until I went there for the NCAA regional in 2005. Without getting into who said what to whom or who confiscated whose cowbell, let's just say that I did not find them to be gracious hosts. :)

I'm sure they would (justifiably) say much worse about Cornell fans should they ever visit Lynah Rink. :(

If it were up to many of us, all cowbell holders would have said bell shoved somewhere rather than confiscated. ;)

No way. This is a WI thing way more so than we can lay claim to it. Think of all the people that are students of MN but are from WI. Many of these people actively root against their own school because they are cheering for bucky instead. I have never understood that, so I don't think that fact can be laid on us. Sure there may be a few, but in terms of numbers we're not even close.

I agree. Your per capita incidence of dooshiness is much higher than where Bale's assessment would put it. :p:D

In all seriousness though, if I grew up a Badger fan, moving to Minneapolis or attending U of M wouldn't change that. I have never understood people that can change their allegiances when they move to a new area.

And a third of the student bodies of MSU, UMD and SCSU actively cheer against our squads. It all evens out.

Moving to an area is one thing. But actually attending the school? You can still be a fan but to actively cheer against the school you are attending? If that can't change your allegiance, that's dooshieness unmatched IMHO.

So if you went to Wisconsin, you'd be a Badger fan?

If you say so. Doesn't compute for me though.

Nothing ever has nor could change the teams that I root for.

Yes I would. But I didn't go to WI, so I'm not. It really is just that simple.

EDIT: Sporting events is just part of life in college. How you can not get sucked into your own teams AND root for a rival against your own school is completely beyond me.

I don't think that's unusual. When I was at UND there were a ton of kids out of the Cities also going to school there, many of them in the aviation program. Some became UND hockey fans, but a majority of those I knew retained their allegiance to the gophers. I suspect that now, 30+ years later, that is still the case.

Gotta say, I am with Gurt on this one. I grew up a Gopher fan and went to games thruought my childhood. No way going to a different school would change that. And if the school I attended was a Gopher rival, I would have cheered against them.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

I obviously didn't appreciate it at the time, but looking back on it now, I even liked the Minnesota goal chant:

"M - I - N - N - E - S - O - T - A ... MINNESOTA! MINNESOTA! MINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNESOTA!!!!"

I hope they were at least conflicted for UND/MN games. You can still support any team for any reason, but your own school should trump all. Maybe that is one subconscious reason I didn't like Madison when I toured it. I even graduated high school in WI and met my wife there. So the state is not all bad, but I took what I wanted and left. :D

Exactly... and that can be used to make my point. Why should a student change what he/she has known his/her entire life for something that is only a small part of their overall college experience?

I've known both types here. A lot of kids from Minnesota come here. Some change their allegiance, others stay loyal. I respect the latter more, but overall, it's really not that important either way.

It's an individual choice and I wouldn't label either as dooshy.
