National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

This has to be one of the best Frozen Fours ever. Each game was entertaining and had fun hockey to watch. Sounds like fans liked it as well. although some media members were complaining about some parts of it being disorganized.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

I'd say the hockey was spectacular. The Xfinity bar complex was amazing.

The rest of it was ok at best. Lots of gaffes all over the place. The in-arena announcing had a number of mistakes, the team arrivals for the championship game were fubar, the Hobey Baker ceremony was a complete cluster from what I understand.

The hockey more than makes up for most of the gaffes. Learn from those and keep making it better.

Stepping back and viewing the games as a neutral...this F4 was amazing for gameplay. Friggin' outstanding. Putting on the homer glasses, it was still pretty darn good.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

There's been a lot of talk of "class" on this thread. The one thing that really disappointed me was that Minny didn't stay around for the post-game presentations. Before I call this a classless move though, I'm would like to know if this was scripted for TV and the lack of time nESPN would commit. When the women's team lost to Clarkson (sorry, had to get that one in, still giddy), the entire Minny team stayed around and accepted their accolades for the all-tournament team, etc. The Gophers last night were nowhere to be found. If this wasn't scripted by the NC$$ or nESPN, then that's a truly classless move.

I would guess it's a tv move. The women's game was not televised, so no restrictions were in place (my guess). As for hockey contracts, they are additional requirements attached to football and bouncyball contracts that ESPN really loves. Hockey is a requirement, and not a choice, for the channel.

I thought it was a great tournament to watch, even though my seats were horrible. I don't know who built the Wells Fargo Center, but they need to be taught a little something about sight lines.

The one thing that amazed me, and for some reason the tweet didn't make the big board (hehe), was the number of Union fans there. I have never in my life seen that many Union fans, even at Achilles Rink. Heck, before maybe 3 or 4 years ago, the Clarkson contingent at Achilles was bigger than the Union contingent (and it was still a house of horrors for us). I almost wonder if they gave out Union gear to Flyers fans before the tournament and asked them to come cheer on the Dutchmen.

Overall, I just love the Frozen Four though. Short of a couple of AHA programs, I think I saw every college team represented by some sort of jersey or t-shirt walking around the arena. I was a little disappointed in the number of Clarkson fans there ... I think we had more in Denver than I saw in Philly.

Exactly why I phrased it as I did. I don't want to go pointing fingers when it wasn't their choice.

From the looks of any social media site....if you weren't a Gopher fan, you were a Union fan yesterday. ;)

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Wow! Still hasn't really sunk in yet. Gonna watch the game again after the Masters.

The game went as it should. It was clear that Union was the better team throughout.

Love how MN game out so physical right out of the gate. Classic Western team play vs a better faster ECAC team. Reminded me of what Western teams did to Harvard and Lane McDonald back in the late 80s. He was concussed numerous times and it ruined what would have been a great NHL career.

Two in a row for the 'lowly' ECAC. Ha! How sweet it is....

'No one should be shocked if, odd as it sounds, this college of 2,100 students, with no athletic scholarships and a sports budget comparable to what its three Frozen Four rivals spend on hockey alone, departs Philadelphia this weekend as the 2014 NCAA men's ice hockey champion.'

U!

I under stand that. I saw many fans of Buckingham and the ____s rooting for Union. However, the number of people there actually in Union gear amazed me.

But I think the point was that there was a lot of Union gear to be seen, even on TV.

And no, neutral people didn't run out to buy Union jerseys just to root against the Gophers - not that you'd go there, but others might. People wear their own teams' jerseys.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave you met UND and their love for Holy Cross? ;)

And I know, and my posts are always half in jest. :)

I certainly would never root against the gophers when they are playing someone else. Think of it more as rooting for all that is good in the world.

Union is not a faster team than Minnesota. Union won the battles in front of the net, they didn't win the game because they out skated the Gophers. The Gophers tried to play physical to start the game, but I would stop well, well short of calling the Gophers a physical team. They are a puck control team that likes to push the pace, much like BC.

Well, I offer congrats to all Union fans except you. We earned our Arrogance and pride with MN's past. So bite me.
"Earned arrogance". Interesting concept.

Anyone who's had the privilege of talking with Bobby Orr will tell you he's one of the most humble people you will ever meet. Maybe if he'd been able to accomplish as much as your college hockey team he wouldn't be saddled with mere humility.

I don't think even Union knew they had that many fans.

No offense, but we can and should bring it up as often as we'd like. It's not mentioned to take anything away from the accomplishments of your team, but two teams were involved in the game tonight, not just yours. And the fact that Minnesota lost 5 key players to the NHL, started 6-7 freshmen on a nightly basis, and had to rely on those freshmen to fill key roles shows just how big of an accomplishment getting to this game was for our team.

Yes, your team deserves praise. Absolutey. But I am proud of this Gopher team and believe they deserve praise for what they accomplished this season too. And that includes making it this far while relying on big contributions from a very young roster.

I am not a union fan. And I know you guys aren't dissing Union and yes it's impressive you made it to the title game. I'm a Q student and we had a ton of freshman and we didn't make it. My point was it's just annoying to hear every fan say the same thing that's all

Fair enough. As annoying as it might be, I am sure you as a Q fan can understand how disappointing it is to be eliminated this late. Just trying to find some positives amoungst that disappointment :)

My situation is certainly different than your guys' because you have experienced both sides and are a powerhouse. While we will always have a solid team in contention we have never tasted the glory. It's certainly hard. The positives I took out in the offseason were we dominated Yale 3 out of 4 times. The problem was they won the only one that counted. You guys are set for another run this year so long as Wilcox stays and I think he will. Any talk of him leaving?
