National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

My situation is certainly different than your guys' because you have experienced both sides and are a powerhouse. While we will always have a solid team in contention we have never tasted the glory. It's certainly hard. The positives I took out in the offseason were we dominated Yale 3 out of 4 times. The problem was they won the only one that counted. You guys are set for another run this year so long as Wilcox stays and I think he will. Any talk of him leaving?

You guys will get a title. It's only a matter of time with the way your program is headed :)

Good question on Wilcox. Haven't heard anything, but my gut feeling is he will be back for another season. If he doesn't come back, not sure what they will do as we aren't set to bring in a high-end goaltending recruit until 2015.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

My point was it's just annoying to hear every fan say the same thing that's all

I saw two fans mention it and many more who didn't. But gosh, don't let reality get it the way of your annoyance.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

"Earned arrogance". Interesting concept.

Anyone who's had the privilege of talking with Bobby Orr will tell you he's one of the most humble people you will ever meet. Maybe if he'd been able to accomplish as much as your college hockey team he wouldn't be saddled with mere humility.

Numbah Foah could take a lesson in being great from MN fans.

In other words, are you really taking me seriously? Friggin' idiot. Which was my point in the first place.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Classic Western team play vs a better faster ECAC team. Reminded me of what Western teams did to Harvard and Lane McDonald back in the late 80s. He was concussed numerous times and it ruined what would have been a great NHL career.

Two in a row for the 'lowly' ECAC. Ha! How sweet it is....

Actually, Lane's concussion problems started in high school and there was a real chance that he was going to miss his senior season due to a concussion he suffered in our first regular season game that year against Yale. It wasn't the Western teams as much as Yale and RPI that gave him problems. People don't know how close he came to hanging it up after the Olympics in '88.

Not only two in a row for the ECAC but Minnesota now has the distinction of losing in the championship game to Union and Harvard; two schools that don't offer athletic scholarships and have far tougher academic standards. That's gotta hurt.

I hear you. I just remember teams head hunting that Harvard team every chance they got. That's all they could do...

But yea, that '89 Harvard team was soooo nasty. Top to bottom. And Eddie Krayer, my man...

I didn't see the All Tournament Team anywhere. Who was on it? Also didn't see the MOP posted.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

IMO this championship game was a quintessential match-up showcasing two of the season's best and yet fairly evenly matched teams. For a college hockey fan, that's as good as it gets in college hockey tournament play. I thought the Gophers sustained good pressure around Union's net at times and had some very good looks but failed to score at key junctures in the game (i.e. M. Reilly x 2).

Both teams stormed out of the gate with fresh legs and IMO the 6 goal scoring barrage in the opening period was the deciding factor in the game. The Gophers established some confidence with a 1-0 and 2-1 lead in the opening frame. But Union's run and gun style pace unraveled the Gopher D around Wilcox, scoring 3 Gs in less than 2 minutes for the 4-2 lead and Union never looked back. IMO that was a key turning point in momentum and took the wind out of the Gopher's sails. Union's speed rushes through the neutral zone and extraordinary tenacity continued around the paint, was better than any team the Gophers faced this season and the Gopher D eventually faltered under the relentless pressure. IMO Adam Wilcox is one of the best goalies to ever wear the "M", and the Gopher D hung him out to dry on a couple Union goals. But this was not one of his better games either letting a couple Gs get passed him on his normally strong glove side.

Vecchione, Carr, and Ciampini had wheels all game, led in the SOG dept. and shelled Wilcox with blast after blast near the slot. Gostisbehere had an outstanding performance with a tying G in the 1st, blocked shots, and made some key plays throughout the game...a phenomenal NHL quality player. Congrats to Union College, 2014 NCAA DI National Champions! They were the better team on Sat. night when it counted the most.

As a stone cold Gopher fan I'm not disappointed at all at the Gopher loss. There were question marks at the beginning of the season as to how the large contingency of talented incoming freshmen would perform with the skill level and pace of D1 hockey. But I think most Gopher fans soon began to put away their doubts and believe this was special group as they witnessed their extraordinary intensity, skill and scoring contribution from the season opener all the way to the title game. This was one of the most productive Gopher freshman classes in recent memory. With most of the guys coming back next year, the Gophers should be a contender again next season. Go Gophers! :)

Stay classy Minnesota...Hahaha!

I know you are close to Canada, but c'mon. Really??? Too funny...

As said before by one of your more respected posters, there were also 5 arrests in Schenectady over rioting as well. Students blocked the street and weren't allowing anyone to safely pass. Units from 5 different police departments were dispatched to the scene, and when they showed up to keep the peace, were on the receiving end of rocks, full beer bottles, full beer cans, and other types of projectiles. Haha, stay classy Union fans. I know you have a lot of radiation in your heads from GE, but c'mon, really..Not funny at all.

It is interesting to watch the local media backpedal a bit about Dinkytown last night. The first night it was a riot, but now it's been downgraded to a disturbance. I still think if there had not have been so many cameras and 3 helicopters around, nothing major would have happened. I think media is realizing that too.

19 arrests vs. 5 for Union. Percentage wise they're higher, right? :p

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Late to the party here but big congrats to Union. I wouldn't have thought the Bruins could hang 12 goals on BC and Minny in back to back games but there it was! Extraordinary performance and they went through their top competition to get there. Really happy for the school and if true the attendance was pretty robust for the finals. A huge late influx of Union fans???

They lost in the championship game to RPI too, but other than Ralph, who's counting? :p

Yay, that's three in the title game and Yale last year on their way to an amazing title run. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

I wanted to post this in the Gopher thread, but it appears to have been locked so I'll post it here instead. Where do Minnesota fans get their bad reputation? Because of what I had read on here, I was very surprised by how classy Minnesota fans are. I lost track of how many different fans came up to congratulate us on the National Championship at the post-game at Xfinity Live. I kept getting stopped by fans wearing Gopher jerseys to tell me what a great team Union have and how we 100% deserved the championship. They have a great team, great fans, and are still the class of college hockey. Hopefully we'll see you again next year in Boston!

You may think I'm joking, but I'm actually being quite serious. The same place where some of your "fans" get their bad reputation....The USCHO Fan Forum. :p
