The Edge Of Democracy:
Political documentary and personal memoir collide in this exploration into the complex truth behind the unraveling of two Brazilian presidencies.

The narration was a bit dry, but this was a very interesting documentary. Obviously it mirrors some stuff that is going on here currently (don't read either way into that). Lots of good history that precipitated the newer history is explained, and it was kind of cool how it seemed that the maker of this, her family was a bit entwined in the history that she was covering. Did it inspire her? Did it drive her? (Pssst, that is left unsaid, I just found me asking it as I watched).

If you like how political machines work, and in some countries how the people react and are more than avid in expressing their beliefs on the streets...I think you'd like this.

There are babies being born today whose adult parents weren’t alive when Shrek was released in 2001. The years start coming, and they don’t stop coming.

There are babies being born today whose parents weren’t alive when Ratatouille was released in 2007.

That plane bound for Flyoverland just whooshed over your head. Think about the songs in movies discussion, then reread my post.

Not to be that guy but...

That song was from Mystery Men in 1999 before Shrek in 2001 dammit!

21 Bridges:
An embattled NYPD detective is thrust into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers after uncovering a massive and unexpected conspiracy. The detective closes all 21 bridges into Manhattan.

Shades of Training Day, and Inside Man, and a conspiracy plot. The plot is formulaic, but the main characters were fairly well-written, I thought. That definitely helped the movie. They didn't try to be too justified, righteous, etc. They were who they were. I'd give it a go, if you haven't seen it.

Re: Movies 52 - 1917: Sonic the Bad Boys of Prey

Dialog help, please.

Guy 1, pontificating, ends a long quote with "-- Pope."

Guy 2, "Da Pope said that?"

Guy 1, "Alexander. Pope."

What's the movie? My google kung fu has been defeated.

Guy 2 is a Dom Deluise type. Guy 1 is an Alan Rickman type.

Knives Out:
When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death.

This is The Royal Tenenbaums Meets Clue. Quirky, demented, and intelligent. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the characters, trying to figure out the real truth, etc. For every red herring, there is a subtle clue that does hold a hint to the real truth. Even if you do figure out who actually did it, the method of how remains well-hidden until the end. Highly recommend.

Her film catalog does not appear to be all that impressive, but how the hell did I never hear of Edwige Fenech before? My goodness.

I have mentioned her many times. She is a giallo legend. Her catalog is amazing:

Five Dolls for an August Moon (one of Mario Bava's best movies)
All the Colors of the Dark
The Case of the Bloody Iris
Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key
Strip Nude for Your Killer

She also did a whole series of sex farces called "the school teacher series" which I own and in all honesty have not watched because They Are Not Good or don't translate after 50 years or because I'm not 15.

But her slasher movies are fantastic. If an Italian horror movie from the 70s does not have Gloria Guida naked in it, then it has Edwige naked in it.

What did you see her in? Five Dolls is probably the best movie she's in. It's a 70's "swinging Italy" time capsule which is fun, but, especially if you know the genre, it's also a very sly and clever movie.

I watched The School Teacher and when I looked up some of the others ("All the Colors..." for instance) they looked a bit campy. However on your recommendation I will look into some more and hope I find them as enjoyable as you did.

Do you have any experience with gialllo? It's definitely an acquired taste but I now own about 50 of them and can make really tight recommendations based on what you like.

I love the genre.

Less than a handful. When I was in the U.S. and used Netflix for DVDs I went almost exclusively with foreign films. And although I didn't "target" gialllo films specifically but did end up with a few. The genre is definitely of interest.
