Saw Lucky Number Slevin for first time in a long time. I forgot how good hartnett can be. Good for him taking a break for years. Next big heartthrob to a good actor who selects really interesting things now.

this year alone with black mirror and Oppenheimer. I think he’s underrated in Oppenheimer too (easy to get lost in that cast) but I’m also probably biased from our catholic school history together

Retired NFL star Michael Oher, whose supposed adoption out of grinding poverty by a wealthy, white family was immortalized in the 2009 movie "The Blind Side," petitioned a Tennessee court Monday with allegations that a central element of the story was a lie concocted by the family to enrich itself at his expense.

The Witch (2015)

Outstanding. A.

Spoilers (I am avoiding even my overall response as a spoiler, because the way the movie grows into you is its fascination. See it, then read.):

I can't think of a more intelligent, more engrossing witch movie. Very few even try to take full advantage of the possibilities of the witch motif, which is as deep as Calvinism and as intellectual and atmospheric as The Scarlet Letter.

It's beautifully shot and it is strikingly unkind to lazy viewers -- there is no quarter given or asked and you had better be prepared for the equivalent of a 2-hour long Puritan church service because this movies wants you to feel moved, and to feel moved you have to be profoundly uncomfortable.

I'd change nothing. Very few movies actually try, and this tries hard.

TIL:

It was originally intended that the Tyrell Batty crushed would be revealed to be a replicant, and as a result, Batty would head up to the next floor, where he would discover the real Tyrell in cryogenic suspension. Sebastian would then explain that an incurable disease struck Tyrell, who had himself frozen until a cure is found.

I hope Oher gets everything these people own. As Jimjamesak responded, I am in no way shocked that these people took advantage of his trust and took advantage of him. They saw nothing but $$$.

Rich white Christian family ripped off a black man while draping themselves in the garb of good Samaritans? And the public lapped it up?

Oh, surely not.

And they just happened to be football boosters of an SEC school...

The Blind Side always was White Savior: The Movie.

Fun fact: Michael Oher's actual HS Football coach? Hugh Freeze.

Idiots on Twitter want Sandra Bullock to give back her Oscar that she won playing Leann.
That movie wasn’t particularly in a good spot from the beginning but, it is not aging well.

Basically every antagonist, the mother, the brother, and the NCAA investigator (who are the only black characters BTW), now turns out to be dead on correct. They were using him for his football ability.

As said on r/cfb: “It takes a lot of work to make Hugh Freeze not be the scummiest character in the story.”

I'm going to guess with Hollywood accounting, it's extremely possible they haven't gotten any royalties from it. Anytime payments are based on net proceeds rather than gross, you're getting $0.

The rest of it fits the bill though, especially the whole "conservatorship = adoption" thing.

Pretty sure they have gotten royalties...because they aren't even denying they got them just that they didn't share them with Michael. (unless the story has changed since last I looked)

And Sandra Bullock should not have won anyways...she shouldnt have to give it back but her performance was not Oscar worthy imho especially when Helen Mirren is up against her.

Oh cmon, that performance and the one speech MLK gave 60 years ago single-handedly solved racism in this country!

Helen Mirren is everything people think Judi Dench is.

She is 10,000 times the actress of anyone since the 1950s, including Streep.
