Sounds like big box office this weekend. Looking forward to both Barbie and Oppenheimer- not all of us want all comic/superhero all the time so it’s nice to see something else getting attention

Oppenheimer was....

It's difficult (In a good way) to put into words. I knew he was ostracized, but the extent that came out. Whew. It's an adventure. What's more incredible is a good portion of the situation / language comes verbatim from the inquiry transcripts itself.

Yes there is a huge "known" cast, but they all take on their roles where you get lost in the story.

It's going to win all of the Oscar's, and if it doesn't, theres something seriously wrong with the academy.

I may have to go see it again. There's just so much emotion carrying through this film.

Also, the practical effects are 100%. I was half expecting a "Mr. Nolan would like to personally thank the US Atomic Energy Commission, the US Department of Defense, Holloman Air Force Base, and the White Sands Missle Range for their participation and test firing," during the end credits.

Wrong Nolan movie, but finally watched "Tenet". I think I need to read a short novel to understand exactly who was doing what, but that's the fun of a Nolan movie. Questions for those who saw Oppenheimer:
- Does he find a way to put Michael Caine in it?
- Does he employ non-linear storytelling, even when not needed?
- Is dramatic tension underscored by the use of a drawn-out low-pitch background sound?

- Does he find a way to put Michael Caine in it?
Unfortunately no.
- Does he employ non-linear storytelling, even when not needed?
Kinda. But for good reason and it works.
- Is dramatic tension underscored by the use of a drawn-out low-pitch background sound?
Occasionally. But it wasn't annoying. He seemed to use the orchestral score to greater effect.

Biggest thing to know going in is that there are two lead characters: J Robert Oppenheimer (all colorized scenes), and Lewis Strauss (all black and white scenes). The timeline doesn't care about colorization.

I saw an interesting TikTok from someone who had a reasonable explanation for one of the "astroturfing" conspiracies from the Q-themed Sound of Freedom film.

The premise is theaters are showing as "sold out" for the film and yet the theater is empty or almost empty when people check on it.

Apparently, at the end of the film there is a QR code displayed (or there was for this theater chain) and you're asked to "pay it forward" so others can enjoy the film. So people have been purchasing tickets through that QR code.

Only, that isn't how ticket sales work (and any one of us could have told them that), so these people think they're paying it forward for others to walk up and see the movie free. Meanwhile, the theater takes the money because they sold a ticket, and the pay it forward person has a ticket purchased in their inbox just going to waste.

Yeah, how would that even work? Is it for a specific person? Or is a stranger just supposed to walk up and ask?

Or is it another right-wing grift operation where they're telling their followers that the best way to stick it to the evil libs is to pay them another $10 for literally fucking nothing?

If the intent is legit they could offer walk-ups who ask if there are any "pay it forward" seats available. Easy enough concept but intent and execution might be a different matter.

Yeah I can't imagine the theater workers being thrilled they have to keep track of this random list.

From how I understood it, no one is keeping track of that list because there isn't a current pay it forward system, and the makers behind the movie didn't implement one.

Had a coworker do Barbenheimer and report that both movies are excellent for what they are, and the combo is surreal.

I am ahem frugal and not likely to see them until they go onto the stupid box in my house rather than the larger stupider more expensive box with the public rest room. But in particular I am looking forward to Barbie.

I just read that the Oppenheimer movie have many Hindus in an uproar over a sex scene. Did it not delve far enough into the Kama sutra?

I saw Barbie twice and it's something you would enjoy.

Saw Barbie last night (with my wife, daughter and mother). I thought it was pretty good and had some good laughs (the opening spoof of 2001 had me rolling). I could understand why the MAGAts of the world would be upset and honestly they can suck it.

I’m actually surprised Mattel went along with it though.

Why? I bet WBD paid them handsomely and they just updated Barbie for the new millennium without having to pay a dime to advertise it. Barbie is more relevant now than she has been in years!

If they had made the movie people expected Barbie would have felt outdated and lame and the movie bombs.

Basically it involves the origin of the famous quote from the Hindu scripture he used in the interview with NBC in the 50's. It was a "dramatic recreation/rethinking" of that where liberties were taken, I'm sure. But it does place an actual copy of the scripture in a "questionable" situation, so I can see why some religious people may get upset by it.

Corporations, especially the toy ones, are usually super protective of their IPs. That and basically allowing the company itself to be spoofed is the type of bold move one would not expect from Mattel.
