MLB 2022: Playing Ball, But Is Anyone Still Watching?

The expanded playoffs are the only reason we have a shot at a four way tie, but it’s too bad that they got rid of additional play-in games. Between the Jays and the three AL West teams I think we’d have a shot at a couple Game 164s under the old system.

The Mets are now LOLMetsing other teams. Last weekend the weather forecast changed and the grounds crew’s initial plans to let the field take on rain naturally failed because it rained too much. Then they threw the tarp over after it rained but that didn’t allow the field to dry so Tuesday’s game had to be postponed to a Wednesday DH. This threw off the Marlins rotation and wouldn’t allow their ace to pitch on Sunday unless he took short rest.

Then last night there was rain at the top of the ninth after the Marlins took the lead. After a three hour rain delay there appears to be a window to play. It sounds like grounds crew started to prep the field, but not exactly with haste, so the Marlins begin complaining, both to the umpires and directly to the grounds crew. It begins raining again and the game is officially suspended in the 9th with the Marlins up 2-1. After that the grounds crew takes a group photo in front of the Miami dugout.

If, after Sunday, the game still has playoff implications, the Marlins will need to travel back to New York from Pittsburgh to play four outs. And then travel again to a new city to begin the playoffs Tuesday should they qualify.

That is entirely too much faith in the Mariners.

Sadly, I agree with this.

You should adopt the Mets as your NL team, Jim. You are already barrel-aged for it.

The Mariners are Greek tragedy: the fall of the hero at the hand of destiny, led by the gods to the depths of suffering. The Mets are Shakespearean tragedy: the fall of the hero at his own hands, ensemble cast, deeply comedic.

Bob Nightengale tweeted yesterday that regardless of wins or losses today by Arizona or Miami, the suspended game between Miami and the Mets will not be resumed, and the records (and resulting seeding) will simply be based on the records after Sunday. But I haven't seen this reported anywhere else. Does anyone know? The only thing at stake is who will go to Milwaukee and who will go to Philly.

The Tigers -- and baseball gods -- orchestrated one of the great sendoffs in sports.
On the only play of Miguel Cabrera's first defensive appearance since '21, he recorded an unassisted putout. Then his kids helped A.J. Hinch remove him from the game.
Goosebumps.

During the Mets game it was announced that if the game had bearing on the post-season then the top of the ninth would be scrubbed and we would win in 8, while if it had no bearing it would finish including the top of the 9th and we would lose.

I was happy with it. Sort of made up for walking him in his last at bat in 7th.

Tim Wakefield passed away from brain cancer this weekend, at a time when his wife is battling with pancreatic cancer. Tim was one of the good guys - the 2010 Roberto Clemente Award winner - and I'm so bummed. Win or lose, he was a stand up man and the world is a little less without him in it.

Meanwhile, in enraging news, he had been keeping it private. So former World Series hero-turned MAGA chud Curt Schilling outs him last week and calls him selfish for keeping it private. Thanks Curt, you raging asshole, for making Tim's last days on earth filled with stress. Take your bloody sock and shove it up your MAGA ass.

In the tradition of the NFL post, these are the MLB teams that should always suck:

Expos
Mets

Padres
Braves

Indians
Brewers

Rangers
White Sox

I half-adopted the Expos as my 2nd favorite team as a kid because I loved their hats. These should live on for eternity:

I thought this was an odd decision. Sure, everyone made the playoffs, but seeding was still at-stake. Ended up being irrelevant because the Marlins ended 0.5 games up and own the tiebreaker so they’d keep their seed regardless. Unless Miami said they’d rather have their day of rest than care if they end up in Milwaukee or Philly.
