MLB 2022: Playing Ball, But Is Anyone Still Watching?

Yadier Molina is next closest at 2116. But won't make it.

Nick Markakis and Jose Reyes were closer, but aren't playing.

Joey Votto at 2035 isn't likely to make it either. Jose Altuve at 1783 has an outside chance if he plays till he's in his 40s.

I immediately thought that Trout would be on that list, but forgot he's made of glass. 1,428 hits at 30.

Mets down 2-0, two outs in the ninth, grounder to Nolan Arenado...

... Arenado throws wild, Mets score 5 unearned runs and win.

19 days and however many games into the season and last night saw MLBs first complete game, from the arm of Walker Buehler.

I have no idea if that is any sort of record for how long it took but because of the way the game is played and how starting pitchers are deployed the likelihood of it taking longer and longer to see a complete game is certainly real.

Despite leading the majors in starts last year and throwing over 200 innings, Buehler did not complete a game in 2021, and last night was just the 3rd CG (and first shutout) in his career. As durable and effective as he has been since becoming a regular in the LA rotation in 2018, I was a little surprised by that.

The Sox pulled Eovaldi last night after 72 pitches through the 7th. Had given up a couple solo shots but other than that he was doing great. After watching Verlander for years it’s weird seeing complete games almost being looked down on.

With the lack of a full spring training it is likely more dangerous keeping your pitchers out there late. It seems like there are more injuries to start the season than in previous ones.

But yeah, that just shows how special Verlander is as a pitcher.

Monday was the 19th day of the MLB season, and Walker Buehler threw the season's first complete game. That's the 2nd-most days into a season before the first CG in MLB history, 1 shy of the record set in 2019 when German Marquez did it on the 20th day of the season.

Wow. Everything about that play is a train wreck. Even the throw from the cutoff man to the catcher was awful.

But hey, at least they aren't Cincy. The Reds lost again tonight after breaking their losing skid Sunday. They're now 3-14, on pace for a 29-133 season.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Mets are on pace for 119 wins after picking up another W against St Louis.

The Mets and Mariners are 25-11. This is the most glorious timeline. HUZZAH!
I had a coworker (retired now) who’s a huge Mariners fan.

He’d come into to work and go “Mariners lost/won last night” and I’d respond “dude, it’s April”.

Dude, it’s April.

If you lose a bunch in April you won't contend. You can't make the playoffs in April, but you can miss them. Unless you are Oakland. They are the lone exception.

LMFAO

I was there. it was amazing. We were all screaming because it was going to be tied. Then the base coach insanely held up the runner. Booing like crazy. Then I saw the other runners and turned away in disgust only to look up to the throw sailing. And just madness. So much fun.

also, the crowd noise on that was NOT anything close to what it sounds like. There was like 1,000 people there at most.

As I heard someone point out elsewhere, "last I checked a win in April counts for as much as a win in September".
