Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Interesting moves by the Rays. Guess they can just say goodbye to Manny if/when he goes back to his regular antics. Seeing Damon get more than him just shows how far his game has slipped.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

That shouldn't be much of a surprise. Manny's been done for the better part of two years.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Good article about Twins pitcher Brian Duensing and his wife who was teaching at a school this winter when there was a school shooting. Terrible story about a shooting, but as often happens we get to see the good that people can do in the aftermath of a tragic event.

Back when Duensing pitched for the Millard South Patriots, he viewed the Millard North Mustangs as major rivals. But the day after the shootings, hundreds of North students dressed themselves in red, South's school color. They gathered for a big photo by North's school marquee, which said, "We're all Patriots today."

How do you figure? He raked in 2009 and hit pretty well last year too. Sure, not at the ridiculous pace he set from 1999-2002, but he would seem to still be a pretty good bet to produce with the bat.

When you stop sticking needles in your ***, you're bound to see a drop in productivity.

Manny

SLG from 2008-2010: .601, .531, .460. His PAs have gone from 654 to 431 to 320. The power is out. He's either out of the lineup, or can't stay in the lineup health-wise. The OBP is still nice, but he's going to be 39 in May. It's a matter of time before that shoe drops as well, and at that age that's going to be much sooner rather than later. At 29, it's a couple bad years. At 39, this is the end, or at least the beginning of the end. I think we've already seen the latter.

If you're not mashing the ball (and he hasn't since 2008), and you barely know which end of the glove to stick on your hand (which has been going on since God was a rookie), the club isn't going to tolerate your antics.

Brian Cashman says he wouldn't have signed Rafael Soriano if it was his call. I thought Cashman had control?:D:p

Found a picture of Steinbrenner and Cashman. That's Cashman on the left! :D

Manny is going to DH for Tampa, which means the fielding isn't an issue, and less wear and tear means he's more likely to stay healthy. If you leave out his abysmal September with the White Sox (which obviously you can't just disregard, but for the sake of argument let's do so), his hitting in 2010 was only slightly off from 2009. (And, for that matter, basically the same as what he did in the first half of 2008, before he went bonkers after the trade to the Dodgers.)

2008 with Bos: 425 PA, .299/.398/.529
2008 with LA: 229 PA, .396/.489/.743
2009: 431 PA, .290/.418/.531
2010 with LA: 232 PA, .311/.405/.510
2010 with ChW: 88 PA, .261/.420/.319

Personally, I think the late-season explosion in 2008 and the late-season implosion in 2010 are aberrations that make the three-year SLG trend you mentioned look worse than he's actually trending. (By which I mean, downward but not that precipitously.) Now, obviously you can't count on a 39-year-old to necessarily stay healthy, but if Tampa just gets Manny's 2010 Dodgers line over twice as many plate appearances, he's easily worth the money. I don't think it's much of a stretch to at least predict .290/.390/.475, espcially with no defense to distract him. And as far as Manny Being Manny goes, they're paying him peanuts. If he's a distraction, they can cut him.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Seriously? The Twins should be thrilled to be paying $16.5 mil for two years from Pavano.
I believe the stache had a good year, but i don't expect him at his age to repeat it. So while maybe they didn't pay the market price, I still feel like they overpaid for what they are likely to actually get from him.

Pettite to retire. Announcement Friday @ Yankee Stadium.

He has the 3rd most wins ever as a Yankee pitcher. I expect there certainly will be an Andy Pettite day this season.

I think he merits consideration for the HOF. 240 Wins, 2 20 win seasons, record 19 post-season wins, 3 All Star appearances. Over 2200 Ks.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

My guess is that he's a Veterans Committee pick.

I always enjoyed watching him pitch.
