MLB 2010: The Second Half

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Cubs and Dodgers talking swap of Lilly and Theriot for who knows from the Dodgers.

Knowing Hendry's prowess at these trades, The Dodgers would win the comparison regardless.

LADodgers get: Lilly, Theriot, and Cash Considerations (mostly Lilly's salary)

CHICubs get: Who knows but it would probably be Blake DeWitt, an overrated fireballer pitching prospect (no control but he can throw near 100mph... aka the Hendry prototype pitcher), and a Single -A or AA infielder (who odds on won't ever make it to the majors).

Holy Cow!

I was pretty close!

It's alright though. On ESPN.com, several Dodger fans are lamenting the fact that the Dodgers didn't get a 3B prospect in the deal and all. CORRECTION: These are not exactly Hendry prototypical pitchers. Wallach doesn't have great velocity (scouting reports say 88-92 mph fastball) and has control issues. He's in Single-A. Smit has decent strikeout stuff but is inconsistent. He was recently promoted to AA. So I was wrong. They're not power pitchers, but otherwise I was right to state that, at this time, they have control problems and are long shots at making the majors. If this goes as usual, then the Dodgers would have gotten Theriot, Lilly, and Cash for Blake DeWitt. A pretty solid move on the part of the Dodgers.

Dempster is supposedly on the trade block too, but I don't see him moving. Too bad.

I still have high hopes that Ricketts fires Hendry. He's said twice he won't, which is unfortunate... but not all that surprising. Omahan stick together just like Matt Millen and the Ford Family.

Kindof why I hope they don't sign Ryne Sandberg to be manager of the Cubs. I mean... what if he doesn't do a good enough job? Can the Cubs fire him? Sure, they could, but look at what the PR fall out would be.

The Cubs should try to find Sandberg a managing position with another team in good faith. That way Sandberg gets what he deserves (an MLB Managing gig) and the Cubs aren't put into an unwinnable position.

Even with the drastic solutions necessary for the Cubs to turn it around, the Cubs aren't going to be very good the next few years. I don't want Sandberg's name being smeared into the dirt because of the front office ineptitude.

That would be the dumbest move alive.

good news: jon heyman says 'yankees out of ramirez, if they were ever in'

bad news: buster olney says 'Heard this: The Indians would eat a lot of the money owed to Kerry Wood if the Yankees and Cleveland finish this deal'

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

dotel did get traded. good for him, bad for my fantasy team

Yeah same with me I have Dotel, Guzman and Theriot all on my fantasy team. I don't think it will effect Theriot but Dotel goes from closer to set up man and Guzman becomes a utility player once Ian Kinsler returns.

Pick-up Hanrahan or Storen stat.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

storen already got picked up in my league, i did grab hanrahan pre-deadline. i'm wondering if i should now drop dotel for westbrook

I don't get the "player to be named later." It's like going to a restaurant and handing them an IOU after you've eaten.

It's not that bizarre. One team wants a player (practically always the best part of the deal anyway), the other isn't quite sure who they want in return but they have a short list of guys they're interested in and they can't get all of them. So the team that wanted the player in the first place gets him, and the team giving up that player gets a few months to watch the guys they're interested in and make a decision down the road. There's always a relatively short list that is included in a PTBNL trade of potential PTBNLs.

The PTBNL, by the way, can only be used when trading between leagues. Little known fact.

"I'll determine how much I'll pay you based on how well this digests."

Chipotle would go bankrupt.

I'm not sure about that:

Follow the 8/22/02 transaction here

3-way trade between Oakland, the Yankees and the Tigers, with Bonderman being the player to be named later. Bonderman had to be the player to be named, as it had not been a year since he had been signed out of his draft at the time the trade was made.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

That explains it. Bonderman was not pitching in the American League at the time of the trade. He was in the minors.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Jeez.

The possibility was discussed Friday, the eve of the non-waiver trade deadline, according to major-league sources.

The Red Sox were not going to trade Lowell directly to the Yankees, sources said. The deal would have involved the Rangers, who would have acquired Lowell and sent him to the Yankees with the Red Sox’s knowledge.

Lowell, 36, remains in limbo with the Red Sox, who have not activated him from the disabled list even though he is 11-for-22 with four homers on his rehabilitation assignment at Triple A.

The Yankees likely would have used Lowell as a right-handed DH and backup for Alex Rodriguez at third base and Mark Teixeira at first. Their acquisition of Lance Berkman, who will serve mostly as a DH, did not deter them from trying to acquire Lowell, a source said.

Lowell has been on the disabled list since June 24 with a strained right hip. Manager Terry Francona told reporters that the Red Sox considered activating him Saturday, but chose to hold off instead.

“We were going to activate him, and then there was some conversation that’s probably up the food chain from me a little bit that probably needs to continue to happen,” Francona said.

Lowell still can be traded before the Aug. 31 deadline for setting postseason rosters. He likely would clear waivers, and the Phillies, Rays and Twins are among the teams that could show interest.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Another fun fact about PTBNL is that players can end up being traded for themselves. I think it's happened about seven times in history.

Or once, considering that the one time it happened was the impetus for the "changing leagues" rule, and that the PTBNL has to come from a pre-determined list, thus precluding the possibility of that player being traded for himself.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

It happened to the Tigers and Cubs with Dickie Noles in the late 80's as well. He went to Detroit late in the season, and the Tigers sent him back to the Cubs in the offseason. According to Baseball Reference, they're calling that a loan.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

According to some guy on Yahoo Answers who seems to know some stuff, it's happened six times.

Harry Chiti (4/26/62 and 6/15/62)
John MacDonald (7/22/05 and 11/10/05)
Archie Corbin (11/20/92 and 2/5/93)
Mark Ross (12/9/85 and 3/31/86)
Dickie Noles (9/22/87 and 10/23/87)
Clint Courtney (1/24/61 and 3/14/61)

But I guess officially it's only Chiti, since Hammer said players returned in the offseason are classified as loans.
