Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

There's a guy on the Mariners who is having a very special day today, and you're not going to believe his name.

Doug Fister.

ETA: No-no stopped in the 7th.

Fister? I hardly even... never mind.

So George Will was on Mike & Mike talking about the chances of radical realignment based on geography and payroll. I went and looked up the 2010 payroll of every team...and these are the divisions I came up with (payroll rank is listed with each team):

East:
Yankees-1
Red Sox-2
Phillies-4
Mets-5
Braves-15

Central:
Cubs-3
Tigers-6
White Sox-7
Twins-11
Cardinals-13

West:
Angels-8
Mariners-9
Giants-10
Dodgers-12
Rockies-16

East:
Orioles-17
Rays-21
Blue Jays-22
Nationals-23
Marlins-26

Central:
Brewers-18
Reds-19
Royals-20
Indians-24
Pirates-30

West:
Astros-14
Diamondbacks-25
Rangers-27
Athletics-28
Padres-29

The Rays would win 130 games in that division.

That's what's wrong with the idea. The Rays (and even the Marlins) are good even with little tiny payrolls. Also, I couldn't find a spot to put the Pirates where they WOULDN'T get destroyed. :)

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I hate realignment talk. THe divisions are perfect right now. Or at least as close to perfect as possible. You might get away with swapping the Mets and Phillies for the Blue Jays and Orioles. But the two Centrals and two Wests are pretty **** close to being perfect. It's just the east coast teams that have a huge disparity.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

A better way to maintain competitive balance without realignment is to play a balanced schedule, go to 156 game season and either reduce or get rid of interleague play. Also change the playoff format so their is only 2 off day per series maximum (for travel), forcing teams to use more than 2 starters.

- Shortens the season by a week and allows the World Series to move back into October.

- AL and NL get to play every team 10-12 times (NL would have a couple extra games to disperse within division if they wanted).

- Playoff teams can not just rely on #1 starters to win a series.

- No interleague means more games against teams competing for your playoff spot.

I am pretty sure the Orioles and Blue Jays would be a bit more competitive if they could get rid of the extra 24 games against the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays to play teams in the Central or West.

This also means the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays would play a bit tougher schedule as they would have extra games against the better teams from the Central and West.

The good news is he isn't on my fantasy roster. :)
The bad news he isn't on my opponent's either. :(

He wouldnt have an ERA since he didnt record an out. It would just be INF. Which isnt a real number, therefore wouldnt help or hurt you in fantasy.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Carlos Zambrano moved to the bullpen?

What the frick Lou?

Early signs of folding by the All Star Break.

Another early sign?

"Jeff Samardzija is still a quality major league talent for this year."

Oh well.

It's still early at least.

And they were winning when I last saw the highlights on MLB Network.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

There is nothing better then watching the White Sox lose. Well, maybe reading the Chicago newspapers the next day online. :D

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Yes, there is. The inevitable Ozzie meltdowns, especially the ones where he threatens the well-being of one Jay Mariotti.
