MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

There is nothing better then watching the White Sox lose. Well, maybe reading the Chicago newspapers the next day online. :D

If you aren't following Ozzie Guillen on Twitter, you should :D I feel his pain with Comcast :o

ESPN has confirmed this is the real Ozzie Guillen. So far this year, nothing too controversial, but there is TONS of potential here.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Psst. Don't talk to Phil Hughes between innings, he's having a potentially special night in Oakland.
Yep, he's throwing a no hitter through 7 innings.

The only baserunner was the 2nd batter he faced, who he walked on 4 pitches. Hughes also had *five* strikeouts through 2 innings, and has 9 so far. 87 pitches, so the pitch count shouldn't be a factor.

Sheets did pretty well, 4 hits in 6 innings for 2 runs. Looks like Beane may have known what he was doing when he signed him...

edit: no no ends in the 8th, on a ground ball back to hughes.

Yep, not a clean single, but he just couldn't find it after he knocked it down. Another solid outing by Phil: 7.1 IP, 1h, 2BB, 10k.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Carlos Zambrano moved to the bullpen?

What the frick Lou?

Every Cubs Starter has an ERA under 3.20 except Z's 7.45.
With Lilly coming back, it's hard to push someone else who has been pitching well to the bullpen and let Z continue to suck, which he is.
Yes the bullpen has been a problem as well but it does look like something needs to change for Z.

I don't think anyone would argue Ben Sheets isn't a very good pitcher, or even that he wouldn't be able to come back from this most recent injury. I'd wait until he actually lasts a whole season before calling it a good move.

I think it was brilliant. Even if the A's fall out of the race, Sheets will bring back prospects. Or the A's can keep him and get draft picks when he signs elsewhere this winter. If he gets hurt? The insurance company pays the contract. The only lose for the A's is if he was sitting at like 3-10, 5.60 ERA at the end of July.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

All the baseball people I heard on TV (MLBN, ESPN) said they had never heard of the unwritten rule of going across the pitchers mound. So I wonder where Dallas is getting his unwritten rules from.

In the 1000s of innings I have watched in person I cannot remember a single guy walking on the pitcher's mound. Does it bother me? No.

But then it's A-Rod. What can you expect from him exactly? And then mentioning the # of wins seems to suggest that A-Rod did it not out of ignorance or innocence but because he was trying to play mind games with Braden and that's bush league.

I'll say this. A-Rod making comments like talking about Braden's handful of wins is going to get him a fastball in the earhole sooner or later. He's going to say the wrong thing about the wrong person and they're going to lay him down in the batter's box at 97 MPH, and he's going to have an awful headache as a result.

So.. Saying that about some clown who threw a hissy fit over something no one else knew existed is going to get A-Rod beaned?

Not a chance.

No, no, no. You missed my point. It's the "oh, he's only got a handful of wins, I'm headed to the Hall of Fame, who is he to say anything to me?" attitude that the comments came with, at least from my perception. I would not put it past him to say that to the wrong guy, and then he's going to get clunked.

He has knocked the ball out of a guy's hand at first base, then the yelling at the 3rd baseman on a play there, and now this. I sense a bit of a pattern here.

I remember a Little League coach specifically telling us "the mound is for the pitcher and his invited guests." I think it is an unwritten rule, but as with all unwritten rules there's a difference between somebody accidentally violating it (like this) or deliberately doing it (dancing on the Cowboys' star).

We'll never know whether ARod is a jerk -- it's been the NY media's narrative for him contra their fanboyism for Jeter.

Sure, he's a dick for the first two things. But for this? Not a chance. Saying what he did about it is a pretty fair reaction considering the out-of-his-mind fit that Braden threw over it during and after the game. I'd imagine the only people that support Braden on this are his teammates and maybe his friends. Making up "rules" to get angry about something is no way to live.

Bert Blyleven backed Braden on that one. Of course Bert might have a bit of a bias being a former pitcher and all, but he said he'd plunk A-Rod if given the chance after that.

Take it for what you will.

So, do you think A-Rod ran on the mound for

1) Mind game
2) Ignorance
3) Innocence

?

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Oh, make no mistake, it's a mind game. But pitchers can play another mind game of their own, to the tune of a 96 MPH heater aimed at the chin.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Geography.

He was at third and had to go back to first.

Really? Name one other instance where you remember the guy running on the mound?

You always see the guy run around the grass behind the mound even though its quicker and more direct to run on the mound.

How many times did you run on the mound when you played?
