MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed listening to Ron Santo in the broadcast booth, especially when he makes his comments in the background. I swear, he wanted to let a "Goddammit!" loose in the last inning .

MLB adopts rule changes to All-Star game:
Changes to the All-Star Game, based on recommendations by the Special Committee for On-Field Matters, were announced by Major League Baseball on Wednesday, furthering efforts to sharpen the competitive edge in baseball's annual Midsummer Classic.

Starting with the 81st All-Star Game on July 13 in Anaheim, the changes include:

• The contest always will include a designated hitter no matter where it's played.
• No pitcher who competes for his team on the previous Sunday will be allowed to pitch in the game.
• Rosters have been increased to 34 players, by one slot designated for a position player.
• A rule will allow one position player re-entry into the game if necessitated by injury.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I dislike the rule on principle...

Considering that 2-3 innings is pretty much the max for pitchers these days, I'm not sure that this will have a major impact. The All Star Game has devalued pitchers' plate skills for a long time, now.

Call me when MLB starts using home-run derbies to decide extra-inning games that are still tied through, say, 12 innings. Then I'll join the outrage.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

The DH sucks donkey balls; anything that legitimizes it also sucks. (Rinse and repeat for the shoot out.) Do not compromise with evil.

As for the rest, who cares? You either have to increase roster size or eliminate the rule that every team has at least one all star, and I like the latter rule.

The injury replacement rule (IIRC they always had it for catcher) makes sense given the circumstances.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Clearly they don't trust any manager in an all-star game to be able to manage a pitching staff correctly. It makes sense. Shut up.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

DH for an All-Star game makes complete sense. The ASG is not supposed to be about bunting over runners and managing your bullpen.

It's not like the NL is going to the DH for regular season games. No outrage here.

BTW Balloting has started.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I think it's more retarded that balloting started already than the DH being used no matter what.

It's bad enough that things like "number of all star games" is used by some people as a benchmark for how good a player you were; it's even worse when you can cast a vote for an all star when there haven't even been 25 games played in the season.

I mean, some pitchers have a wopping four starts already, and we're going to start selecting who's worthy and who isn't? One bad *inning* can move the numbers enough to shake things up, that's just absurd.

Wait, we can vote on pitchers now?

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

All-Star games are stupid in general, an anachronism from a time where you couldn't see players outside of your home city more than a few times a year.

I refuse to get riled up over one, even if it "counts"

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

How is it any worse? When is the last time you saw a pitcher take an AB? This has zero effect on the game outside of precautionary measures.

This is such a stupid debate. People see the letters DH and immediately act like the four horsemen are flying. Then when you actually think about the impact on the ASG itself and you realize there is none.
