MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Which is true, except for the part where he's right. The Yankees and Red Sox DO have embarrassingly long games. Nearly an hour longer than the rest of the league.

Who cares? Both teams take tons of pitches and score a ton of runs. Not everyone can be the Mets and hack away at everything and suck at baseball.

Right, and it has nothing to do with the fact that each and every pitch all of the batters step out and adjust their batting gloves.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

He wants to speed the game up, don't give the batter that last second call for time, cut short the visits to the mound more than usual and go yell at Posada the next time he goes to talk to the pitcher 8 times in one inning. World Series or no, that was ****ing stupid.

Of course it was stupid. I just hope he's kind enough to open his fat yap when a Royals-Indians game goes too long.

Brent> That was one *group* of Phillies fans. Another group bought 1,500. The individual tickets didn't go on sale until a couple weeks ago, and sold out in 7 minutes.

Who's going to notice. There are like 8 Royals fans left. They'll just leave.

Wow Tampa is stuck at Tropicana until 2027 (contract).

On the topic of games taking too long, there has to be a happy medium between what the Yankees/Red Sox do now and the preferred time of MLB.

Joe West was wrong to say what he said, but his base point was correct. Games do need to be shorter in general.

That happens in every game ever played. Joe West is being a baby.

Then why is the average Major League game 2:56 and the average Red Sox-Yankees game is 3:45? Yeah, all 18 Sox-Yanks games being on national tv with the extra long commercial breaks doesn't help, but that doesn't add 45 minutes by itself, either.

The complaint isn't that all MLB games are too long, it's that Red Sox-Yankees games specifically take ridiculously longer than every other game, even ones with similar pitch counts.

Put it this way, I've been to games where Steve bleeping Trachsel pitches. They still don't take as long.

And this is where what Schilling said comes into play. Almost every one of these games is put on Fox or ESPN. That means lots of advertisers want in, that also means more commercials (since that's somehow allowed for those two). Listen, I hate the long games as much as anyone, but Joe West is being an arsehole about this. If he doesn't want to be assigned those games anymore, I don't think either team will really miss him.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

commercials and runs don't make up for that 45 minutes. THe twins were in the top five for runs and I know the twins managed some of the lowest game times in the majors.

And don't give me that crap like pedroia says where working the count takes up the time either. The twins are masters at that, well, minus delmon young. Then pedroia goes on to say that they get killed when they lose to the yankees. Ok, fine, what team doesn't get ripped for losing to their rivals?

West could have (and probably should have) aired his qualms privately but the commissioner has done nothing to solve the problem.

Not going to get into if he is right or not, but he never should have said it.. Never.

YOu're probably right. But if he's already gone up the ladder with his complaints, and the commissioner has done nothing to remedy the situation what other options does he have? (and don't say don't work yankeee/red sox games because the MLB will not remove one of their veteran umpires from these games.)

Well, I would say just be a big boy and deal with it or don't ref games.

Joe West was wrong to say what he said, but his base point was correct. Games do need to be shorter in general.

BOS-NYY games will always take longer, because they're de facto playoff games for both teams involved. No sense arguing that they really aren't. They're perceived that way by the fans, by the managers, and by the organizations. Therefore, they are.

As for making all games shorter, call a bigger strike zone. That was Schill's point, right? Even buffoons and blowhards are right sometimes. :)

That would make more sense if the wild card didn't exist. :p

Season Series:
2009: 9-9
2008: 9-9
2007: 10-8 NYY
2006: 11-8 NYY
2005: 10-9 NYY

Really what MLB should do is have the Yankees and Red Sox not play any games and just award 9 wins of the 18 games to each team. Even after the Yankees dropped the first 8 to the Red Sox last year, they still finished 9-9.

:D

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Want to have less NYY-BOS games?

Go back to the balanced schedule.

Hey look, I'm a genius!

That's the point...you don't need to make all games shorter. The average game is still under 3 hours long. We're talking about a very specific subset of games.
