Minnesotans Arguing About the Weather III: Storm's a comin'

My friend in Nashville has 7 inches of snow in her back yard and it is 13 degrees. My friends in the PNW were snowed in much of the weekend. My friend in Michigan got a ton of snow and now terrible temps. Meanwhile we have barely an inch of snow at my house.

Most cities around here have closed their outdoor rinks for the season. Most cities around here opened their outdoor rinks just last week.

It’s hard for me to put into words how distressing this is. I grew up having outdoor practices often. Very few elite players from MN didn’t spend a lot of time on outdoor rinks.

I know there are people who live here and don’t care about hockey, but for me it’s the fabric of this place and I don’t want a future where we don’t have outdoor rinks.

I literally don't remember a season growing up where there weren't two backyard rinks in our large collective backyard group.

That sucks. Growing up I rarely had a practice indoors, that was for games only.

Yeah this stinks. We got our little one into skating lessons this year, but it is clear to me he also needs to get out and practice one on one with the old man (me). St Louis Park has a lot of little neighborhood parks and surprising number of them have a sheet or two, including one a short walk away from us. I was really looking forward to it. Just isn’t happening.

Maine has very little ice also. People going thru the ice on lakes and ponds every day. Imagine January temps 5 degrees above average. When I was younger you could have 2 or 3 ft of ice on ponds by now.

What killed the outdoor ice? Was it too warm when parks would normally start laying down water, than it was too cold to be safe to start laying down water, and then back to being too warm again?

I wonder if cost and risk assessment aren't factors.

Aw man, I'm sorry. That sucks.

It's been 40 degrees here and won't go back down below freezing for like a week. Why go through the expense?

December was warm. Per the NWS, the Twin Cities didn’t have a single day below average for the entire month. We started getting some actual cold weather on January 1, and it only lasted about 2.5 weeks. Now we’re back in the abnormally warm temps - mid-30s to upper 40s.

We hit 50 today. Will be mid 50s on Wednesday.

i hate this.

worried my baby magnolia tree and my spring bulbs may not survive this as im sure its gonna go subzero again later in feb
