Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

I have no problem with the badger rejects or gopher rejects chant/taunt necessarily. it's part and parcel of college kids having fun.

it's obviously off base for a guy like Phil Kessel in the past cause he was recruited by UW. Condon wasn't really recruited by UW so *maybe* he's a reject?

Ryan McDonagh wasn't a gopher reject cause according to tdon he was set to offer him the week after Eaves did.

anyway, kids just having fun.

what I don't like is the new addition to the sieve chant. why are they yelling "it's all your fault" now in between sieves?

I think if we could get 10-15 of us at the game into 1 section we could maybe begin to re-ignite the old cheers like - "who? so what! big deal!" and 1-2 others that have gone by the wayside

This thread and the insipid provincial arguments cannot die soon enough.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

if I thought it would matter to the AD I'd love to make it known to them that the hockey fans don't need to feel subservient or reliant in any way on the success of the football team. after all, UW hockey was kicking *** and taking names decades before Alvarez, and at least 10 maybe 15 years prior to Dave Mclain.

Yep, and we could still be calling the crap-hole Coliseum home.

no. Herb Kohl didn't need Barry. he just did it.

I'm just not a fan of BA anymore. I don't need to worship him (as so many do) and the 93 rose bowl didn't suddenly make the hockey team successful. they had made their mark indelibly by then w/5 titles.

It's stupid anytime. How many Gopher rejects are on their current roster every year.
It's fair to gloat about how many hometown guys you have playing all over. But consider this;

While we may get a lot of genuine "gopher rejects" (guys like Licari or Ross Carlson), but we also get quite a few that are pretty high quality prospects (think guys like Gilbert, McDonagh or McBain) where the gophers have only themselves to blame if they didn't want them or if they simply preferred UW. The latter point being legitimate, IMO, with defensive prospects since I think we have a better track record as of late with defenseman.

what defensemen wouldn't want to play the boring trap every game?

for me it has nothing to do with how many hometown guys we have. I just think it's remarkably stupid to call one of our players a reject when your roster perennially has, what could be called, some of our rejects on it.

And I never said you don't outright win some recruiting battles. That has nothing to do with it.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

If it was aimed at Condon, it's true. UW did little to pursue him. Whether or not that was the right decision is a topic for another time.

Oh I think we could cover it now. Looks pretty dumb at this point as I have been really happy with Nate's play so far this season and think he would be an upgrade to any but the top BADger lines.

Bingo on the kids just having fun, which is what this rivalry should all be about in the 1st place.. The incessant insulting is what ruins it, theres a deep dislike among the two states when related to sports. When it comes to drinking, hunting and fishing all is well..

Student section chant in "not making much sense" shocker.

This is the first time this has happened in any sport, ever.

Your student section is too busy with dance choreography to bother checking the Gopher roster for WI natives. :p

I know your just messing around but here's a question for those that have commented on the dancing student section...why all the comments all of a sudden? This is the first year I've heard comments, and you're the first fan base to have an issue with it.

Every other team that comes in gives positive reviews. Recruits that are at the game love the atmosphere that it brings to the game as do their parents. Hell, your leader at Gopher Puck Live wrote an article about it saying how awesome it is, especially compared to the Mariucci student section after he first experienced it in person.

I guess I don't get the hate...envy? I truly don't know.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

I'm fairly certain we've given you guys **** about it in past years. The simple rule of a rivalry is this: anything you notice on the other side requires you to try to make fun of it in some fashion. :D

And FTR I don't peruse GPL. Also, if I make fun of a student section, that in no way means I endorse MN's. For starters, the section was split up for many years which didn't help matters, and then there's just the basic fact that many in said section are frat boys / ****tards that would rather **** with their phones than watch the ****ing game. It was that way when I was a student a decade ago, and apparently it hasn't changed much (although apparently they finally unified the student sections - I think - but now only allow students to buy 1/2 season tickets instead of fulls).

I think most people would admit, all things being equal, that the enthusiasm the Badger student section exhibits is pretty neat.

But what's funny is that they obviously take the time to learn all the cheers/moves/motions, but don't take the time to learn the game that they are watching. And it's not like it's complex stuff, really. Cheering when your team ices the puck...or getting vocally excited about a Badger carrying the puck into the offensive zone 1 on 2, shows a lack of understanding about even some of the most basic elements of hockey.
So, it really lends itself to ribs about the students being too busy planning their next dancing cheer to bother paying attention to the game.

The students at MN are getting better, but they still have a good number of people who "want to be seen."

And the WI student section has always been mocked for their lame choreographed stunts that have nothing to do with the game.

Many times the Gophers don't give out full scholarships most of the players are on 25%, 50% and to lesser extent 75% or 100%.

Are you saying the players from Minnesota that have chosen Wisconsin got more scholarship money at UW? I'm not sure how your post matches up with the one you quoted.

Many times when the Gophers lose out to the BADgers or any other school it is because the Gophers didn't give up enough money. That is how recruiting goes, the Gophers can't win them all.
