Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Sano getting a day off to rest that hammy. Sucks for the paying fans who won't get to see him swing a bat. Vargas at first and Mauer batting third and DH. Goody.

Enough with putting that hack at the top of the lineup. Put Mauer 8th where he belongs.

We only have 4 good players and he is still in that top 4. As much as he may suck, he's better than what we have to replace him.

Hunter is hitting about .170 since the break but we keep trotting him out there.

Rosario gets his 2nd chance with the bases loaded today, and it's only the 3rd inning. He flew out the first time to end the inning.

This time... GRAND SLAM!

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

So the Twins have a stud in AAA in Berrios yet they are in a playoff race and still throw Pelfrey out there as a starter. They screwed the pooch with Berrios as far as innings thrown in the minors. Should of held back on him a bit for a possible call up in august or September. The hell with the service time.

I'm fine with them holding back on Berrios. First, there is no guarantee that Berrios would come in and do better than Pelfrey. There have been numerous "AAA studs" that have not panned out in the big leagues. Second, this Twins team isn't loaded with offensive talent, and while they can usually put up 3-4 runs/game, that could very well not be enough even if Berrios were to be effective. Third, Berrios is 21 years old and had pitched a grand total of 3 IP in AAA prior to this season. The team needed to see what he could do, and he needed to figure his stuff out. Fourth, with 160 IP (and keeping in mind that his previous high for an entire season was less than 140 IP), he could have given the Twins two, maybe three starts. In other words, even if he had been effective and put the Twins in position to maybe get into the Wild Card, he wouldn't have been available for the final two weeks or so, and wouldn't have been available for the playoffs. Finally, realistically this Twins team is vastly exceeding expectations, and they have a good, young squad. This wasn't supposed to be the Twins year, and even if they made the playoffs, they don't have the depth necessary in their starting rotation to win a playoff series (assuming they were to advance from the Wild Card).

Save Berrios for next season when the team should have a more realistic shot of making the Playoffs and advancing. That will also give Berrios more time than just 2-3 starts to try and get settled into the majors. No need to burn the kid to try and eek out a shot at a one-game, all-or-nothing game against New York at Yankee Stadium. Sure it would be fun to see this season, but this team is built for greater success in the years to come.

Current Twins players I'd rather have at the plate than Mauer:
Sano
Dozier
Plouffe
Escobar
Rosario
Nunez

And yes, the Twins royally ****ed up the Berrios situation,

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

The twins have definitely not screwed up the Berrios situation for all the reasons FS23 stated.

Rather have at the plate is a different question than who hits 2nd in the order. No one's batting Sano in the 2 hole. :D

Rosario needs to cut down on K's and start walking more to really hold his spot in the order long term.

Nunez needs to be in the lineup more to know if he's a full time capable player. He may be great in short stints and less so as a full timer.

MinneSANOta comes through again. Jepsen with yet another save. Perkins can take the rest of the year off.
