Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Good thing the central division sucks.

I hear flushing sounds on the TV today.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

So can I criticize Gardy for going to the bullpen for no reason or is that not allowed either? ;)

edit: I dont care...Gardy blew this one big time.

I think I figured it out. Twins are off limit because they're a small market team, even though they're in the upper half of MLB in payroll, but the Vikings are free game and it's encouraged.

I, along with Wilbur, blame Gardy...

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Of course you don't because nothing I said is really disputable...his numbers are down...it happens :) When great hitters slump they will get heat that is how it works. Even Ted Williams did :)
Possible reason for rise in doubles and fall in HRs: he's now hitting in a pitcher's park for half his games.

Plenty of other hitters seem capable of hitting dingers there. Before today it was mostly the opposition sadly.

Sad on the 3rd base side today section 124 row 33. Glorious seats and there were smiles everywhere from the pre-game flyover all the way up until the Burnett/Mijares/Guerrier meltdown.

I read recently it has the fourth fewest homeruns in the majors this season.

Yep. And while HR's are nice, as long as his line drives are doubles and not cans of corn outs, I'm fine with it.

His average was below .300 at one point today. Not exacly Rod Carewish.

Would be higher if the Twins hit as many as the visitors.

I agree, except let's take it one step further, let's just contract the whole team. We're not allowed to be optimists apparently.

Now who is playing the martyr? :D

And who isnt an optimist, I still have the team going to the Series and I am not joking unlike Brent :)

Actually, I think they are gonna make a serious run, and should make the Series. My posts like that are mocking the bipolarness of some fans. :p

My partials are in 105...3rd base side is awesome :)

Bakukin,

I can buy that except he isnt hitting them at home or on the road so it doesnt explain all his issues. Plus, his overall hitting is down so it makes sense most of his stats would drop.

Like I said, there is nothing wrong with him slumping it happens to everyone. There is also nothing wrong with some of us being concerned about it. It doesnt mean we dislike Mauer or wish bad things on him, just that we notice the issues. I take it a bit farther sometimes though to **** off the Apostles :D

What if last year was.....wait for it.....*gasp* a fluke? Maybe he is just a solid, consistent 300 hitter, with a high OPS, and great catcher?

I know, I'm going to hell for even entertaining that thought, but I'm just asking the tough questions. ;)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

I tend to think last season was a fluke.

I also think this team is a playoff team - but not a WS team unless they correct their major problems (i.e. they need a frontline starter to go with Liriano and Pavano, and a reliable setup man wouldn't hurt given Guerrier's struggles).

Let's not forget...

he's a CATCHER

I told a friend of mine about this conversation, and the first thing he asked was "did some idiot say something stupid like 'he's a catcher' trying to defend Mauer?"

You can get by (in an ideal case) with only two ace starters in the playoffs, but 3 is preferable, and you still need a decent bullpen.

It's not stupid. There are few 300-hitting catchers in the league.

Your friend is an idiot for ignoring Mauer's position. Keep in mind that the typical catcher hits about 50 points lower, and his backup hits even worse than that. It's not like he plays OF or 1B where there's tons of guys hitting in the .280-.300 range and for power.

A similar thing could be said of Jeter - the reason he gives the Yanks an advantage is that he's a SS who's a very good hitter - since that position is also typically horrible offensively. Imagine how much better the Twins lineup would be if Punto/Hardy/whoever was at short was hitting .300? As much as people love to rip on Punto for being terrible at the plate, it's not all that uncommon for a SS to be like that.

So put Mauer at 3rd and have someone terrible catching. There. Now we're the norm and Mauer isn't special anymore. :p
