Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

What if last year was.....wait for it.....*gasp* a fluke? Maybe he is just a solid, consistent 300 hitter, with a high OPS, and great catcher?

If last year was a fluke he's not worth his contract. No contact hitting catcher in the history of the sport was ever paid what Mauer makes relatively.

His contract was as much a simple fanbase guarantee as it was a performance payoff. You lose Baby Jesus, a guy who is literally "one of us" and you lose fans. I know you're too smart to not realize that.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Last year probably was a fluke...except the average because he had batted pretty high the other two times he won the batting title. No matter what excuse you make right now his average is a disappointment compared to most of his years. (I would still take this "bad" year obviously)

For better or worse though he got the contract he did in part because of what he did last year. (and it was justified by pretty much everyone because of the numbers) That is probably going to be the benchmark for what people expect out of a guy making as much as he does.

As for positional scarcity remember AJ batted .300 the two years before we got rid of his *** to make room for Mauer. When some of us said you dont trade a .300 hitting catcher some (like TBA specifically) mocked us for it because of Mauer's potential. Just saying.

Right or wrong, at this point fans are going to expect more than just a .300 average out of Mauer.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

AJ's best season (the last one with the Twins) had these numbers:
11 HR / .312 avg / .360 OBP / .464 SLG / .824 OPS. Since then, his highest OPS has been .769, and his highest OBP has been .333. His HR totals went up for the most part, but that's the only offensive stat that saw any improvement.

Mauer's worst season (his first full one / second overall):
9 HR / .294 avg / .372 OBP / .411 SLG / .783 OPS

So, his best is fairly comparable to Mauer's worst, and since he was traded, every season has compared unfavorably (except for his HR output) to these "subpar" Mauer stats.

Speaking of the baby Jesus, his six seasons (not counting the first short one) have been equally split between mediocre (for him) and good (assuming this one remains similar to what he's doing so far).

The mediocre seasons (2005, 2007, 2010):
Avg: .294, .293, .297
HR: 9, 7, 3 (projects to 6-7)
OBP: .372, .382, .373
OPS: .783, .808, .799

The good seasons (2006, 2008, 2009):
Avg: .347, .328, .365
HR: 13, 9, 28
OBP: .429, .413, .444
OPS: .936, .864, 1.031

Maybe he's bipolar.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Now who is playing the martyr? :D

And who isnt an optimist, I still have the team going to the Series and I am not joking unlike Brent :)

That's the point. Boy, it sort of sucks when someone posts the exact same stuff you do doesn't it?

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

I told a friend of mine about this conversation, and the first thing he asked was "did some idiot say something stupid like 'he's a catcher' trying to defend Mauer?"

Does your buddy realize he's an idiot? Has he ever played catcher?

how long has he watched baseball? Becuase it's quite apparent he doesn't watch it. The beatings these guys take wears you down. Injuries don't heal as fast. I wouldn't be shocked if he's still feeling the heel injury.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Didn't he have that injury last year too when he had such great numbers? It's awfully convenient to praise him for the numbers last year and then turn around and use his position as an excuse when he is slumping. Yes he's a catcher but he was also one last year too and i'm pretty sure he was taking a beating in some of those games last year. You can't have it both ways. Either he's just a catcher and he's not expected to hit or he's a fantastic athlete who should be hitting better than he is who happens to be a catcher.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

To the ******** that left this comment:

Way to make generalizations about his friend without knowing anything about him. Maybe he has played catcher and watched baseball all his life. Does that make his comment more valid?

Yeah, and his buddy didn't make generalizations either. Good one. You look like an idiot yourself. Leave your name next time. Coward.

No...because I don't care. If it bothers you fine, this is just a way to vent frustration and mess with people for me. :D

If you want to know what I really think, you are better off not trying to discern that from my posts on any message board seeing as I am a real person and all ;)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

I can't wait to play Central Division teams so the Twins can prove their prowess. Sucks to have to play these big market Eastern teams. :(

I don't usually come into this thread but I did because the Twins made it interesting despite that horrid 7th inning.

But my question, Scooby (assuming probably erroneously that you're being serious) is that if you can't show your prowess against these big market eastern teams, how are the Twins going to do anything other than win the AL Central and then bow out at the first sign of Eastern Team Competition?

Though I'm not a fan, I've always had a reason to scoff at the Twins until this year. They seem to be holding to their promise of doing something now that they've got a new ballpark. Maybe that would have happened regardless now that Carl "Cheap-posterior" Pohlad is out of the picture but I mean... signing a real power hitter (waning years of his career or otherwise)? In the running for Cliff Lee? WOW. Color me impressed.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Did anyone here (by any chance) DVR the twins/rays game today? Apparently I got on TV.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

So you are saying we should delete the recording promptly so as not to harm our eyes? :D

Yeah, pretty much. Aybar smacked a foul ball that went off a guys hands in front of me. I was leaning in trying to catch it and it caught me in the face. Apparently they showed me on TV when it happened. Or least I'm being told that.

Edit: My buddy had his computer set to record the replay tonight so we'll see.

They are replaying the game at 2am so you should be able to see yourself be embarrassed no problem :p

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Wouldn't be the first time, and I can promise it won't be the last.

It cant be as bad as the lady I saw a few weeks ago...she got plastered in the face on a line drive and had to be carted off :eek:

I have never gotten close to getting a foul ball :(

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

I would be lying if I told you I didn't have concern we are not leading the division at this time. Detroit and Chicago are insisting on making this close.

That said, there is PLENTY OF TIME left in the season to pull out of the funk and then some. I was saying before the season it would be interesting to see how this team responds to a slump. It is hard to argue they aren't slumping now.

I was with Cubs fans all weekend; they couldn't believe all the biatching they are hearing from the Twins camp. I thanked them; watching their team provided me the perspective I needed ;) :)

Congratulations to Joe and Justin being named All Star Game starters. Further proof of just how thankful we should be for our team this year (and last and next, etc...).

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

They need to play better in all facets at this point. Their pitching is average at best lately, their situational hitting is suspect and they don't even look confident out there. This is not a fun team to watch right now. I'm still watching though :)

I think the all star break will do them all good, and I still.think a move is needed to shake things up...let's hope where there is smoke there is fire :)
