It's beyond retarded to hate on Mauer this year regardless of the contract, but I would be retarded myself to say he hasn't lived up to his potential (and I'm not sayig he has to hit last year numbers) so far this year.
Gimme 2 consistent .300 catchers right now. It's an honest question, btw, since I don't really know.
Four catchers have played 50 or more games this season and have higher OBP's than him (he's currently at .373):
Soto .401
Jaso .400
Ruiz .398
McCann .377
Mauer's career OBP is 45th all-time.
.365, IIRC. Do you know how HIGH that avg is?
Because Mauer is one of us plain and simple.
That doesn't mean he sucks, or that he was a flash in the pan or isnt the best catcher in baseball,...
Because Mauer is one of us plain and simple. Notice how they never have trouble ripping Morneau when he has a bad month, but if you dare say Mauer isnt hitting well right now the dander of the acolytes goes way up!
Once again I have yet to see anyone ANYONE say anything bad about Mauer except that his numbers are way down from last season. Sorry if that sounds negative, but look at the numbers, they happen to be down. Just like all the Apostles told us how his numbers were UP last year when he hit all those homers and got all those RBIs. They are numbers, they aren't lying to us
That doesn't mean he sucks, or that he was a flash in the pan or isnt the best catcher in baseball, it means that at this point in the season he is not hitting to the level any of us thought he would. You can all make all the excuses you want, defend him however you choose, but don't pretend for one instant that you believed at this point in the season he would be batting sub .300 with 2 homers and 20 less RBI than Delmon Young and that if he was batting .350 you wouldnt all be walking around with your Mauer "One Of Us" hardons preaching the Gospel of Sideburns!
On a different topic, Delmon Young has 34 strikeouts on the year in 250 at bats. That puts him at 8th on the team behind such notable hitters (the ones the stats geeks tout for their ability to make productive outs) as Denard Span, Nick Punto and O-Dog. He also has only 7 more than He who Hath Been Nailed to the Cross
Of course you don't because nothing I said is really disputable...his numbers are down...it happens When great hitters slump they will get heat that is how it works. Even Ted Williams did
And Brent where are these people supposedly going off the deep end over Mauer? In here not really. At the games...not even close! On the radio...maybe one caller per show and. ten more will defend him! In the media..nope. So tell me where...let me guess Old Chicago in Plymouth
Various local media outlets, and yes, in here to a degree, I've been hearing "What's wrong with Mauer?" "Why is Mauer slumping?" "Mauer needs to pick it up if we are to have a chance." etc etc.
And I respond to that by saying that he's still hitting .300 and is more productive than most players out there. I can only imagine if his average dips to .290, oh the carnage.
So can I criticize Gardy for going to the bullpen for no reason or is that not allowed either?
