Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

It's beyond retarded to hate on Mauer this year regardless of the contract, but I would be retarded myself to say he hasn't lived up to his potential (and I'm not sayig he has to hit last year numbers) so far this year.

Gimme 2 consistent .300 catchers right now. It's an honest question, btw, since I don't really know. :o

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Four catchers have played 50 or more games this season and have higher OBP's than him (he's currently at .373):
Soto .401
Jaso .400
Ruiz .398
McCann .377

Mauer's career OBP is 45th all-time.

I'd say a 3 year window is a big enough sample size, but again, correct me if I'm wrong. So, no single season numbers. Gimme 3+ total stats. Anyone can have an off year.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

.365, IIRC. Do you know how HIGH that avg is?

I do. In the last 10 years, the league leaders in batting have had an average over .360 eight times out of twenty (Garciaparra & Helton in 2001, Bonds in 2002, Ichiro & Bonds in 2004, Magglio Ordonez in 2007, Chipper Jones in 2008, and Mauer in 2009). Let's not pretend Mauer cured cancer by hitting .360.

Mauer has played in exactly half as many games as he did last year. Let's see how everything measures up.

Runs: 94/42
Hits: 191/78
2B: 30/23
HR: 28/3
RBI: 96/34
BB: 76/32
SO: 63/26
Avg: .365/.300
OBP: .444/.375
Slg: .587/.431
OBP: 1.031/.806

Sweet. He had a career year in every category except for doubles. Yippee. That'll go great with the World Series trophy the Twins didn't win. Also, why is everyone crapping on Delmon for having a good year and I'm not allowed to call out how sub-Mauer Joe has been? Racists. :p

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Because Mauer is one of us plain and simple. Notice how they never have trouble ripping Morneau when he has a bad month, but if you dare say Mauer isnt hitting well right now the dander of the acolytes goes way up! :p

Once again I have yet to see anyone ANYONE say anything bad about Mauer except that his numbers are way down from last season. Sorry if that sounds negative, but look at the numbers, they happen to be down. Just like all the Apostles told us how his numbers were UP last year when he hit all those homers and got all those RBIs. They are numbers, they aren't lying to us ;)

That doesn't mean he sucks, or that he was a flash in the pan or isnt the best catcher in baseball, it means that at this point in the season he is not hitting to the level any of us thought he would. You can all make all the excuses you want, defend him however you choose, but don't pretend for one instant that you believed at this point in the season he would be batting sub .300 with 2 homers and 20 less RBI than Delmon Young and that if he was batting .350 you wouldnt all be walking around with your Mauer "One Of Us" hardons preaching the Gospel of Sideburns! :D

On a different topic, Delmon Young has 34 strikeouts on the year in 250 at bats. That puts him at 8th on the team behind such notable hitters (the ones the stats geeks tout for their ability to make productive outs) as Denard Span, Nick Punto and O-Dog. He also has only 7 more than He who Hath Been Nailed to the Cross :p

Imagine if Baker was from Minneapolis. Everyone would be sporting a stiffy because he went 7 innings and didn't look like absolute dog crap for a change. :p

Coulda fooled me with the way some people are talking about him. ;)

That's all I'm saying.

I don't even know how to respond to this post except with: :rolleyes:

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Of course you don't because nothing I said is really disputable...his numbers are down...it happens :) When great hitters slump they will get heat that is how it works. Even Ted Williams did :)

And Brent where are these people supposedly going off the deep end over Mauer? In here not really. At the games...not even close! On the radio...maybe one caller per show and. ten more will defend him! In the media..nope. So tell me where...let me guess Old Chicago in Plymouth ;)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

We got ourselves a potential division winner here. Going to be a fun second half.

Various local media outlets, and yes, in here to a degree, I've been hearing "What's wrong with Mauer?" "Why is Mauer slumping?" "Mauer needs to pick it up if we are to have a chance." etc etc.

And I respond to that by saying that he's still hitting .300 and is more productive than most players out there. I can only imagine if his average dips to .290, oh the carnage.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Thome passes Killebrew today and does it in a Twins uniform. Good day to be at the ballpark I bet.

He is slumping because every hitter slumps. I still dont see anyone saying he sucks or anything that isnt warranted. I think you are overreacting to people who are asking legit questions. (the same ones that get asked when any player slumps) Or are we not allowed to wonder aloud if there is something wrong with Mauer at the moment? ;)

I always smile seeing Thome in a Twins uniform :)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

So can I criticize Gardy for going to the bullpen for no reason or is that not allowed either? ;)

edit: I dont care...Gardy blew this one big time.

Please, don't pull this martyr crap. You're doing the same thing you're accusing other people of doing.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Martyr? I asked a question...I mean if it isnt fair to ask why Mauer is slumping (according to some) it would seem unfair to criticize Gardy seeing as he has been a very successful manager. Just making sure all is kosher buddy :) :D

But like I said, I dont care, his pulling Liriano blew this game so far.

Seriously, do you not see how ludicrous this whole conversation has been? I have, that is why I have put in multiple smilies to show how funny it is to me. :D If that is being a martyr than we have different definitions :p ;) :D

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}
